not really 'news' as such - given the success of this series HBO was always going to want more

I'm surprised they're going there, I was expecting, 100, or 300 or a few hundred years back, not actually revealing the ancient history which GRR has always been cagey on.

That might be deliberate. I get the impression GRRM has written himself (and the TV writers) into a corner with GoT and it will continue to be a shell of it's book-era series.

If they go far enough back they have more freedom with the ending, characters etc as the outline is much more general.

After being so disappointed with film franchises (The Last Jedi) and TV series' (Westworld Season 2), I am very worried that this will also end up being utterly disappointing.

I sincerely hope I am wrong, but the massive drop in script quality in Season 7 doesn't bode well...

I haven't lost all of my interest for this, but a large portion of it. S7 was woeful, I mean, really bad retconning and ignoring the world the programme had built up for 7 years. I have a feeling this 7a/8 will be 50% entertainment 50% irritating

Lost interest after it overtook the books, Went back to season 1 to start again and gave up at the same point. Its clear where the original material ends and the HBO tv series begins.

Add in the huge popularity and stories being driven from that it became one of any fantasy tv series.

Will still watch it out, Even if the books do finally finish, Think ive just lost interest in it all now to not bother reading, Which is a shame as they are what made the story.

I think that the only fitting end after wrapping it up so quickly will be that the white walkers just destroy everything in their paths.

Yeah, another series seven means it'salmost certain to be either a Deus Ex Machina or an Everybody Dies.

Or maybe Bran holed up in winterfell changing the past.

I reckon we've not has the book because GRR has agreed to hold it back, so as to not steal the show's thunder

could have reached that point now - although since there has been some divergence perhaps not as relevant: not impossible books and show end differently! (assuming books actually get to the end!) But more likely the divergence is in areas irrelevant to the 'main' plot/narrative/end game.

I think with the huge divergences (which ultimately led to lower quality and dissatisfaction) that we saw take part in S5, the sort of stuff that is yet to be revealed; Hodor, Stan the man's fate in the north, Dany's fate, house of black and white, bran etc. Will be far more satisfying in th books, far more rewarding. and if some of these things (which they will) will be explored in the next book, then it would rob the show of their satisfying dénouement. I've not read it anywhere, it's just an idea, as I was pondering all the cool stuff to be discussed (basically the four battle taking place)
