Anyone else have to squint during the stalking through the wrecked castle scene? darkovision is back.
Yep, scenes like that really make me wish I had OLED / HDR. It didn't look amazing on my ageing LED even with lights off and picture settings tweaked.
We recently bought an oled - the detail in the dark scenes is utterly superb.
Yep we have an LG OLED and it is very good in dark scenes, had no issues seeing what was going on last night. smile
I don't think the episode would be very watchable on anything else than an OLED, I can see the directors wanting to future proof the episodes using upto date tech but currently how many people have HDR 10 capable tv sets?
It looked perfectly good on my LCD screen, and it wasn't broadcast in HDR so that's irrelevant. Saying that though, it would suit the content brilliantly.
I was watching in the daytime on a decent and well set up 55" lcd, it was basically a black screen for several minutes biggrin
laugh

I'm going to have to stick it on in the bedroom to compare it on our old LED Samsung, I hadn't thought of it being too dark but maybe i'm just spoiled after having the OLED one for some time now...

Lapped that episode up like a cat that got the cream.

Loved it.

As others have said the only woolen bit was the dragon flying love-in but there again that just builds the tension for when Jon confronts Danni about the little birthright issue, if he does at all

Started watching Season1, Episode 1 about an hour ago. Lets see what all the fuss is about... I'm avoiding as much as possible, I imagine it'll take me a month or so to watch the lot.
Shouldn't take more than a week if you really commit wink
No point in rushing though, he has 5 weeks until the last episode of season 8 so if he finishes the first 7 series' around then he can move straight on to binge the 8th!

I envy you, being able to watch it all completely fresh and with all the surprises and fantastic story telling in store for you. I've binged it all about 3 times now and still think it's amazing and still pick up little things I missed before.

I thought it was a really good opening to the last series.

My only gripe would be that they tried to put "too" much into it....I appreciate alot of characters have re-united at Winterfell but did it need a scene with almost EVERY one of them?

and yes the jon dany scenes were a bit meh. the scene at last hearth nearly made me dump my rubbish....

A mixture of some decent scene-setting and some bits which were a bit meh.

Given it's such a significant part of the story, having Sam casually inform Jon he is the heir to the throne and Ned wasn't actually his father was a bit of a let down.

Bran is fecking annoying but the closing scene was good.

Is it me that is finding some of the dialogue a bit weak? Tryion, Bronn and Davos still great but some of the lines between Jon and Queenie were a bit stilted.

We started re-watching S1 and what you lose in SFX you gain significantly in performances, dialogue and intrigue.

That said, I can't wait for next week!
The show is not the same since they ran out of source material. I thought this was one of the better episodes in terms of not firing everything off like they did in S7.

The dragon scene was pretty cringey, no chance they could hold on to that when flying around.

Could have been a good plot twist to surprise people with having him just fall to his death in the winterfell courtyard biggrin

Jon Snow is a crucial character to Daenerys , both emotionally and politically but lets just risk his life by performing aerial acrobatics whilst 500ft in the air at 250mph with just 2 slippery horns to hold onto.

Yep the most unbelievable part about them flying around on ENORMOUS FIRE BREATHING DRAGONS was the fact that it would probably be difficult to hold on laugh

I do agree with you though, I was trying to say the same thing to my missus last night when we were watching it, she told me to STFU and stop ruining everything. rolleyes

Also this, again, was told to STFU biggrin

Hope that's the last cringe moment we see.

I wonder if Jon snow has his doubts about Dani and ends up killing her as she dies have a heartless side that seems to be getting stronger.
Yep, she's already threatened his family...

I can see her coming unstuck here.

These people aren't the Dothraki savages that are to be pushed about.

The thing was bran made sure he was told so that it must mean he is started to think about the future and must impact on the story. The battle with the whitewalkers is just a side line really. The nightking might not be interested in the throne but a person perhaps and bran seems to be the string puller now.

Thanks for the replies - don't really have time to sit for hours on end but will do my best!

Regarding the post about envying me, the only other series I've really watched is Breaking Bad which I loved. And do think I could forget it all, to go back to the start and watch it all again with the surprises! I'm trying to acknowledge I'm in a relatively unique position of not knowing ANYTHING really. Lets see how long it takes me...

I think the fact it was done privately and in the crypt under the statue of Ned added gravitas to it imo. Hammered home to Jon that Ned withheld the truth to protect him. They also have the scope to keep the wider 'reveal' to another episode.

And the manner of it being told to Jon changed, from the "wow, isn't it marvellous" expected telling to a "this bh who has had my father and brother executed isn't the rightful Queen, you are.....well not the rightful Queen Jon, the rightful King, unless you have made a different lifestyle choice since I have been away...oh and thank you for the strong friendship we have. I mean Jorah who only knew me from the Citadel and Daenerys who doesn't even know me knew I was here and managed to find me out to say hello but you couldn't be bothered. I had to find you skulking away down here."

Old fashioned but at the time extremely expensive CRT here. We could see everything perfectly. It’s Panasonic’s finest from 17 years ago.

In that case, I (and many others) also recommend the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica. It's another series I'd love to see a-fresh and is something I've also binged 3-4 times.

Wasn't it snowing in kings landing at the end of S7?

That bugged me. Other than that, good opener though.
