I thought it was superb, quite a heartfelt episode with lots of good dialogue.

I know people are eager to get to the action but I think after 7 seasons / years of most of these characters, being this close to the end of the show it's only right to give everyone their last (for some) moment.

There's still, what, nearly 5 hours left? A lot of time left..

Does anyone like anything anymore? Tough crowd.
For the last few years people have been complaining that it's all been rushed, then as soon as they do a proper episode again, they complain they don't like that either.

Not that long though.

1. Fight with the ice dudes
2. Preamble to the fight with sersei
3. Fight with sersei
4. Who is on the iron throne / aftermath

That's 1 hour left for any / all the rest of it. I suspect that the ice dude fight and aftermath of that is 2 hours rather than 1 - after all we've spent 6 seasons talking about what a huge ruck this will be, and [spoiler] we just got told that there will effectively be 2 fights not 1 [/spoi!er]
I also can't believe that they won't end the next episode with some "person you like in peril" ending because well, how could they resist that?

The episode felt like Helms deep lite.

I’m going to be working from home today. Going to stick a few older episodes on the second monitor. Any must watch/listen outside Battle of bds, Red Wedding etc.?

I already did 3.5. Beric/Hound fight, Jaime Lannister passed over to Boltons, Jon/Ygritte in the cave. A lot of awesomeness in this one.

My prediction:

The battle of winterfell will finish with massive losses on both sides but no outright winner. The Knight king will kill Bran/the 3 eyed raven and then the army of the dead will abandon the fight and march south. The surviving northerners will regroup and chase after them.

It's epic TV, we all know what coming next, the battle, it is nice for proper drama, it never really leaves you satisfied though, you always want to see what happens next.

I guess for some the slow nuances of traditional story telling are lost on them. I love the history angle the show is based on, it really gives you a insight into how the past was for people fighting etc

It really does feel like you are watching history being made, albeit in a fantasy realm on a fictional TV show.

i'm going with Arya and her spear killing the Night King and the rest of the undead will die with him. It will happen just as it looks like all hope is lost. The writers have telegraphed this with all the subtlety of a hand grenade, the knife throwing scene was put in for this forthcoming scene.

What is Arya's story for if not to kill the Night King?

Not sure how to feel.

There was some really funny moments in the episode, and it definitely felt like the night before a battle. All the reunions was probably a nice touch..

But we are 2 episodes in and virtually nothing has happened, I'd at least hoped for something by now.

Felt quite LOTR-esque.

I did enjoy it, some very nice scenes. But I am sure I read a while ago that because this has been distilled into six episodes only, every episode would be 'Feature-Length', which equates to roughly 90 minutes for non commercial material. The first two episodes have been well under sixty minutes, the same length as the full ten episode season episodes.

First 2 are 60 mins - the remainder are all feature length 90 mins (including the adverts so more like 80mins) - thought everyone knew that?

You can expect about 45 minutes of battle sequence next week, so that should satisfy you.

The Mountain and the Viper stands out...but the best bit...the speech I think is from the ep previous. Baelor as well as The Rains of Castermere (Red Wedding). I also think...the one with STannis coming in to save the Night Watch...last ep of 4th series. Had to go and check, got it wrong, it was the Children...poor ole Stannis

In the books, it's different, but I'll bet show psycho will want Cersei's blood on her hands.

What are you expecting to happen? We know the whole series can be distilled down to one big battle, deal with Cersei, someone wins and some fluff around the edges. Two halves, next week is the end of the first half.

I enjoyed it, the less that happens, the less scope for the writers to fk things up.

Ghost seems to have shrunk, but at least the writers have noticed everyone is asking.

If people haven't been paying attention, the rest goes like this.

1. Arya kills the Night King, everything else is then dead again. Other favoured characters kill Wights. Another Dragon dies.

Not sure why everyone is being so pessimistic, there's a load of Valyrian steel, a fk-tonne of dragon glass and two dragons on hand now. All the things that were missing every other time there's been a fight. The dead only have the numbers until the dragons run a clear-out and while the Wights exist.

2. The remaining Dragon deals with the Golden Company. Jamie kills Cersei. Tyrion kills Bronn.

3. Jon and Danny remember they're both Targs and get married anyway. Sansa is reminded that she's not Queen in the North.

4. The end.

5. GRRM either doesn't finish the books, or writes them so the Night King wins.

Regarding Cersei, I think (or rather, my wife thinks) that Jamie will die and Ayra will assume Jamie's face and she will kill her, disguised as her brother, the only person she probably trusts.

I’m going to do 4.8 and 4.9 then. That’s Mountain v Viper with Watchers on the Wall to follow.
