I wanted an ending where the Night King came out on top, and all those seasons of everyone striving, plotting and scheming came to nothing because they all got stomped on by something that didn't care about the politics or the throne.

Final shot should have been the throne abandoned in a ruin.
Me too, or at least have that battle at the end. (with him winning)

The only reason so many people hated the ending (forgetting about the rush of it all) was because they thought it would be a happy American every after ending and not the ending they got, the ending that was planned. Remember Weiss and Benioff got the job to write the series from Martin because when he asked them who eventually sits on the Iron Throne they got it right.
That's a hell of a take.

'forgetting about the rush of it all'... or, this theory only works if you ignore what actually made the last few seasons so crap.

Indeed

Bittersweet endings are fine if the journey there is entertaining and all the actions of the characters are setup properly.

Personally I thought it became a clusterf*ck from a writing perspective right around the point the "catch a wight" plot started and everything collapsed. You had flashy visuals from that point on but no characters had any proper motivation and you could see the writers had no talent.

Never watched it before. Is it worth watching, good storyline? or was it all just hype? Might start the first episode this evening

do you like middle-ages type politicing? Sex, violence, bad language - all three together? A real sense of danger for all characters?

I got as far as half way through episode 1 and figured it is not for me. But thanks for yours and the previous replies.

It's a slow starter. You need a few episodes to develop everyone

Slow starting show with great character development and some excellent plot twists. By season 4 it was the best TV show I'd ever seen but from five onwards it went downhill before positively crashing in the final two seasons.

It changes a lot as it goes on - becomes more fantasy

Watch the first 2-3 episodes, it should grab you then...... Just be aware you will get very engrossed in it only to be massively let down by the last two seasons.....

I did a rewatch but couldn't make it past 'The Long Night' episode.
It was good to revisit the show and then see the reunions etc. in the lead up to that episode, but I just can't put myself through watching it.

I'm late to the party, but just started watching GoT.
I'm half way through the second season, and I'm really struggling to follow the multiple plot lines/characters.
Is there a good idiots guide I can use?
Struggle on and it will all become clear
or just give up?

I found that just watching them regularly helped. The characters and plots do gel over time, but it was very hard to follow at first. It didn't help that some of the characters were similar, and some looked a lot like each other, to me at least. Where I did struggle was the time in between seasons. If I were to re-watch it, I'd carry on from season to season without a break!

Ask here if you have any queries, we should be able to clarify things without spoilers that you'll probably encounter elsewhere online..

I was going to write a broad strokes summary of the show around the starting point but even that may be a bit long-winded laugh

As mentioned above though, it really does gel together as it goes and it's pretty normal to be overwhelmed by the vast amount of characters, locations and plots!

Any specific points or queries you can think of, just as thumbup

Some of the stuff is straightforward, but the Stark girl that was dressed as a boy got some Lannister solider to kill two other Lannister soldiers. I've never seen him before, and have no idea why he killed the first one (pushing him of a wall) and why he's even killing the soldiers for her. All season 2, episode 6 or 7.

The person killing for her was a prisoner she freed from the cart in the convoy. It saved his and two other peoples lives (in the cart) so he asked her for 3 names to balance it out - he's quite keen on honouring death's quota like that.
