Saving lives at sea: BBC 1
Discussion
We are a strange species aren't we. We have so many aholes yet these people knowingly risk their lives to save people on a daily basis without any real expectation of reward.
I got towed in about 10 years ago when my gearbox failed and although I managed to get to within 200 yards of my mooring by just blipping the gearbox in and out of gear the tide turned and I needed a tow. I have been a monthly contributor ever since.

just started watching it and it looked like the Rib going out to the two girls was doing 61knots.
For an Atlantic 75 it’s a top speed of 32kt and the 85 (longer and replacing the 75) it’s 35kt I would say that’s the VHF but he would be on CH0 or CH16 and traffic in the loch is on CH12 so not sure.

They had twin Yamaha 115hp engines on and they had twin display units on that's where I saw the 61 I have the same on a Dory single Engine which will do 35 knots all day long.I would say that’s the VHF but he would be on CH0 or CH16 and traffic in the loch is on CH12 so not sure.
I will replay the programme I am intrigued now to see what the dials displayed. just thought it may have been RPM x100 if they used two strokes.

I think it's amazing what they do and not really something you ever think about mutch.
Don't know why but it seems crazy in this day and age tankers and fishing boats like the other week get into difficulty and sink. Guess I thought it was not common bit like cars hardly break down.
Real eye opener and massive respect al round.

who wouldn't leave the warmth of their bed to go out in the middle of the night just like now in 40 mph winds to help a total stranger all for a cup of tea and a biscuit when they get back on land .
Most of us probably would stay in bed . You don't need a boat to need the RNLI as this series has shown and you can donate a small amount each month to keep them saving lives.

I remember the shout off Cornwall and a lot of people were comparing it to '81 as it was unfolding, thankfully the boats are so much more powerful these days and the weather was a bit kinder, there was still a collective sigh of relief when the boats were back home safe.
What happened in 1981?RIP to all those in the Penlee disaster. The same episode had an impressive bit with a stretcher going from a lifeboat to air ambulance.
But the one that will really stick in my memory was the 3 sisters being pulled out of the sea a week or two before. The bit with the girl screaming for her twin sister and talking about it later was quite emotional.
