Luke Cage - Marvel Netflix Series
Discussion
Enjoying Luke Cage generally, but not as good as DD or JJ for me because of;
- I think the acting generally is quite mediocre in places
- actor who plays Luke Cage seems a bit one-dimensional. Wife likes him though lol
- I cannot take Theo Rossi (Shades) seriously as a bad guy in this
I'm up to ep6 and will carry on anyway.

Couldn't disagree more, except for the Rossi comment.- I think the acting generally is quite mediocre in places

Found DD a little too slow when it focused on his friends past and career.
The acting in all Marvel TV shows is average at best, so no surprises there.
JJ was so bad I gave up after 3 episodes. The actress that played JJ was woeful.
I've just started this.... Aaaaaand turned it off - I'm half an hour in to the first episode and it's very dark. By dark, I mean the lighting is so "moody" and "atmospheric" that I can't see a fking thing.
The story is so bloody slow and I struggled to be even remotely interested that I had to turn it off. I'm not 100% sure I'll come back to it really.
I loved JJ and DD and I was hoping that this would be just as engaging, but it's just not - A slow burner maybe? I don't know. I'm not sure I'll ever find out.....

Just finished it. I really enjoyed it. Thought the lead was good. I thought cottonmouth was good, really likeable with how much he cares for his club and music, but also a baddie.
I was a bit let down by the ending. Just so obviously a setup to series 2
Thought JJ was better, but can't fault this.
Interesting cameos and I think I spotted Stan Lee!

I hugely enjoyed the music in S2 yet most of it I would normally despise. Maybe it's seeing the music performed, or perhaps it's listening to it in context of the story... dunno but it was really good. Completely different to my usual taste and I'm grateful for being exposed to it.
I binged the whole series in about 4 days. Quite enjoyed it although perhaps now that we've seen all 4 of them in Defenders, I find the single-character shows a little "thin"... that said, the character development is really good.

Interesting point. Were they all equally polular in the comics?
I think of the netflix lot, only Daredevil was a bonefide a-list, but that was way back in the 70's/80s. I do wonder if it's the scope of the stories/powers...Actually just recalled, the Punisher got superover in the late 80s/90s, and in one story killed everyoneI recently watched Grace Reynolds video on mcu and she mentions Spider-Man felt like a 'small' film which could have easily slotted into netflix. When I started reading comics powerman and iron-fist were called heroes for hire, (bit like the A-team) and their stories were more small scale. I think Cage has been powered up since then, but I think the world saving of the truly powerful is for film and the smaller stuff is for tv.
I reckon the lines aren't hardwired though, and there's scope for crossover, GHost Rider got relegated to a bit player in AoS, as did the Absorbing Man.
I hope Moon KNight gets created, his power set/stories put him in netflix, but I'd like a film.
Finished watching S2 this weekend. Definitely an improvement on S1. The MCU NetFlix shows work best when they develop the support characters and villains. This had me empathising even with a crazed mass murderer.
And what a great way to end. Luke has become Cottonmouth. Probably the best ending of any Marvel NetFlix show.

Interesting observation about the music working within the context of the show. It’s certainly not the type of music I listen to, but I enjoyed it while watching the scenes in which it was played. Maybe there’s a thesis to be written about the cultural specificity of urban music. SpudLink said:
