Yes try and find a HD box from somewhere, there are loads kicking about as people have upgraded to Q. You'll need to pair the card but that can be done by connecting to the internet, note some older boxes don't have wifi.

I got through to Sky and have an engineer booked out for Monday (which was a surprise) - it only took 5 minutes to get through to them.

I'd normally just replace the box but I noticed quite a bit of corrosion on the dish when I was up checking it yesterday so thought I'd invest £30 (down from £65) on a once over before then seeing what's needed.

I noticed boxes on Amazon so if the local routes aren't forthcoming I'll give that a go.

It's been nice not to have the Disney channel for 24 hours to be fair, my daughter probably disagrees.

Cancelling one of the few entertainment outlets during lockdown is an interesting approach.
Some people....don't rely on tv to occupy their time... Maybe you should turn it off sometimes too.

If it is a knackered box they will want to 'upgrade' you to a Q box.

A little OT, can start a new thread if necessary but wanted to ask here first as a couple of Sky employees seem to contribute. I’ve just had notification that my sky fibre deal is coming to an end, and have been provided a new offer. I’m on sky fibre max, they are putting me on Sky super fast which seems to be the same, seems that max doesn’t exist anymore?

However, they want to charge me a one off £10 to take the deal. Not a lot in the grand scheme of things, but charging me to remain a customer, really?! They don’t have to ship a router or activate anything, seems a bit crap they are charging me to renew my contract. Anyone else had this?

Not with Sky but had the same with home insurance recently, it was classed as a 'renewal fee', it was something like £35 as well.
That's the thanks you get for being a customer and sticking with them, needless to say a phone call got it removed, not sure if Sky will do the same or if you'd even have much luck getting through to them.

It turned out the dish / LNB needed replacing, the box is fine now.

That’s part of the issue, normally I’d speak to them and say wtf, but I can’t phone them because I don’t fall into any of their categories and there’s a massive wait. Tried messaging and that’s now failed on me after waiting hours.

Small update/victory, waited all day (about 7 hours) with their messenger service in the background. Eventually got through, offered bigger discount than originally offered over email and dropped the new subscription one off charge. Result thumbup

There are obviously more important things going on in the world, but the little victories are still satisfying

I recently received a Sky price increase and together with the current Covid-19 crisis I decided to cancel Sky. We were also planning on selling our house, although this is obviously on hold for the time being. I've been paying £50pm for the basic package (inc. documentaries) and one multi room box; if they had come back to me with a lower price renewing on a monthly basis I would have probably taken it (they did a similar thing in the past), but the service is due to end tomorrow and I haven't heard anything. On balance we probably watch too much tv so it may be a good thing and we have a new dog so I would rather spend the Summer evenings outdoors or doing something more productive! I would be grateful if somebody could answer a couple of questions -

1) Can I continue to use the sky box to access freestat channels? I appreciate that I won't have the record function. As I'm out of contract can I keep the main box?; from what I gather they are only requesting I send back the multi room box.

2) Will the multi room box continue to function with freestat (until I need to send it back in 60 days)?

We have a log in for Netflix and a smart TV from which I can access youtube/catch up etc so if I can combine this with freestat we should be fine - is there anything else I should consider?

Many thanks

Tim

I'm assuming these are just SkyHD boxes? Yes, they will continue to receive the basic channels. I doubt Sky will ask for either of them back, they may offer a recycling option.

Just had enough of the price.

So got on their live chat and got a saving of £35 a month just by saying i was leaving as its to much. Locked in for the next 18 months.

So that's me with them for a while longer.

The fact you mention 'send it back in 60 days' makes me think it's Q you have. If this is the case the boxes WON'T work after your subscription ends. Sky will block them almost immediately to 'encourage' you to send them back.

If, however, it is Sky+HD then the boxes are yours and will continue to work for freesat channels only. No recordings or recordings functions will work either though.

Since ditching Sky a couple of years ago, we’ve watched less and less ‘live’ tv. I bought a freesat humax box to be able to continue recording, that’s now gone up in the loft too (it was also rubbish). We only ever watch on-demand now (main ones for us are Netflix/Amazon/iPlayer/4od) ditching Sky was the catalyst to completely change our viewing habits.

You may also find, depending how old you’re TV is, a fire stick/Roku/Apple TV has a better experience than built-in apps, just something to consider.

Thanks for all the replies. I do indeed have Sky Q; the service was disconnected this morning but so far I'm still able to access the freestat channels, so if this continues for the next 60 days (until I send the equipment back) I will be happy. I decided to have a large clear a couple of months ago, and included was my old Sky box, which with hindsight wasn't the smartest move!

I also have an old Apple TV so may as well connect that up to my Smart TV, especially as my OH has a free years subscription (although I suspect there isn't much content I want to watch).

You’ll likely find all services will be blocked within 14 days.

My Sky contract is due for renewal on 18 June so I phoned them to either cancel or renegotiate a deal. Obviously the lockdown has affected their call centres, and I found myself dealing with a voice-activated system.

I used my landline first (I'm a Luddite) which is on a Sky line. The "voice" reckoned my number was not recognised. Odd that - it's a Sky line allocated when I moved last year. Therefore I phoned using my mobile (which is on a Sky line) and they asked me what was my enquiry - I asked for the date my contract ends. I was told it ended in 2006. Odd that - still getting all my services even 14 years later.

I recommend not phoning them.

Entertainment: £21
HD: £4

We don't currently have Sports, but have just had a general mailer offering that for £20 a month (and Movies for £10)
