Good episode bar the refuelling which reminds me of someone desperately trying to be funny to a silent room....but more desperate than even that.
Different people have different senses of humour. And sometimes even one's own sense of humour differs based on surroundings and mood. I happened to really enjoy it. I thought the final success was a nice touch too - I was expecting an "oh well, we proved it can't be done" type ending. Clockwork Cupcake said:

Yes it was a bit silly etc etc, but I was still amused by it and laughed at the end when they actually managed it.
I'm pleased it was in the episode.
The whole show was great, even enjoyed the celebrities. The Lancia vs Audi piece was superb, but then anything from that era of rallying usually is. Clarkson mentioned it was sad that Lancia barely exist, it's also sad to see the state of WRC now compared to rallying in the 80's and 90's.

Have you watched WRC recently? Last year was a great year. Any of these would piss on a group b car, even group s cars wouldn't been close

They are, perhaps a little too "efficient" at what they do and less flamboyant? IFKWIM.

Give the group B formula another 35-40 years of tech development and then it would be fair. It's like putting the mallard up against a modern suburban commuter train.
Maybe you should read the post I was replying too. The one where he compares rallying between 35 years ago and now.. WRC cars also look nothing like production cars so the link to the car it is based on, is fairly remote. there is no relatable ground to the car John Doe drives every day.
Of course the same could be said of Quattros and the 037 but the Integrale brought that back. Cars like the 037 and RS200 had far less interest to me than a Mk II Escort or TR7 V8 or Chevette HS.

While I totally agree with you, I find the newer cars less interesting to watch.

I think the camera work doesn't help. You watch the fan videos on YouTube and they look incredible, helicopter shots and panning long shots makes anything look slowThey are, perhaps a little too "efficient" at what they do and less flamboyant? IFKWIM.

Yes, I watch and attend all sorts of rally events. It’s quite a lot of things really, not just the cars although I think they were more interesting back then, as were the rallying personalities. They are fairly bland and all the same now. The other factors are the format of WRC, the repeating of smaller stages in reverse order. The general shortening of rallies and the lack of things like night rallies, which used to be more common in world rallying. Plus the safety aspect of being 50-100m from the stages, with overzealous hi-vis outfitted officials bossing people around. Though with effort that can be avoided.Any of these would piss on a group b car, even group s cars wouldn't been close

I thought the Colin McRae/Richard Burns/Tommi Makkinen eras brought it back. Fast, recognisable cars and reasonably characterful crews. Agree the time prior to Grp B metro/escort/droop-snoot Firenza/Chevettes etc were interesting, all sorts of stuff being rallied back then even MGBs, the TR7V8 was specifically created for rallying IIRC...Of course the same could be said of Quattros and the 037 but the Integrale brought that back. About a year ago I was lucky enough to stumble across an old Gp B meeting (missed the driving part as that was the day we left ) however each of those cars were distinct, from the other and above all interesting to look at. I look at the above and quite frankly it leaves me cold.
If it weren't for the white applique on the front grilles I wouldn't be able to tell what make and model each car was purporting to be. Am I correct in saying that WRC is effectively a sillhouette formula these days?
