I loved the fact that Harris' safety protection was a building strut right behind his head!

Not a bad episode, but, in my opinion (and it is just that, we're all different), not worthy of some of the very high praise some are giving it here. I thought the Cuba bit just lacked that special something that many of the "old" TG challenges had (eg the Bolivia special).

I just can't warm to Rory either....I also wish he'd stop with his jokes about some of the slower cars he drives (like mentioning that the Merc AMG GT-R beat the Smart....).

I'm not disappointed for having watched it, mind. But wouldn't rave about it either smile

Noticed it looked like an Acro jack but didn't want to say just in case.

Harris called the 911 a Porsh and not a Porshah. The heathen!
RR kept saying Camaro wrong too.

Back then, how did they only manage to get 170BHP out of a 5 litre v8.....confused
Strangulated emisions controls and fuel injection/electronics in its infancy.

Cars had to go from big cubes, big carbs and about 8mpg to fit with govt. regulations.
Cars suffered a massive drop in compression to accommodate running on unleaded fuel and EGRs and catalytic convertors.
The 1971 Boss Mustang 351 has 330hp and ran an 11:1 compression ratio but, roll forward to 1972 when the emissions hit home and suddenly, the compression dropped to 8.8:1 and power dropped to 275hp.
However, people stopped buying cars like this and consumers were downsizing and economising, heralding the era of 4 cylinder and V6 engines, sourced from Europe in Ford's case. They relented and brought out a Mustang II 4.9 V8 with a 2 barrel carb, 8.0:1 compression ratio and 122hp...
Still had torque though.

I rented one of those Camaro's when I visited the USA in the late 80's for work, I couldn't believe how slow it was. laugh

The company then loaned me a Chevy Caprice Classic, huge saloon with a massive engine, it was even slower. laugh

Really enjoyed last night's episode, actually thought that it was one of the best this season.

Last night's TG episode was predictable and coma-inducing. Charisma-free presenting and zero funny parts. The whole series has been very hit and miss. The golden era of TV car programs is definitely over, and TG and GT are dying a slow death.

Finally got round to watching it.

Loads of the guest chat was chopped out. Big chunk about him having loads of bikes, a dirt track (I think that got binned as I was too busy trying to spot me in the audience) and a tank. The firing melons at fat kids got binned as expected wink

The whole section with Renault concept car that had no doors went on the floor as well, as did the Nissan/Neesan interplay.

The VT of the Mercedes was just amazing in the studio as the screens were massive and the sound cranked right up. Much more 'oomph' like watching a film in the cinema compared to home.

A good episode, I thought. That Merc AMG, I don't know what superlative I could use to describe it. I even liked the paint job.

The report from Cuba was interesting to say the least. I quite like 1950's American cars. It's as if they all say, "I'm all chrome and I don't care. Get over it!"

Also, the set design is a vast improvement on what used to be. The last lot looked like Clarkson & co. had lifted it all out of a skip.

And no, I don't miss Clarkson, May and Hammond.

Pretty average episode to be honest, was there really only 2 features? AMG GTR and the Cuba bit? Which has been done to death because of Fast 8 coming out (although strangely not mentioned in TG) and also done far better by Mighty Car Mods, you know actually looking at Cuba's car culture rather than pointlessly taking 2 cars there and proving nothing.

Much more entertaining 30 minutes.

Well that episode and Extra Gear was a first for me. The first being that I enjoyed the parts with the guest better than the rest. Yes some find him more than a bit annoying, but I like the randomness of Ross Noble.

The AMG bit was OK but nothing different to what we have seen a zillion times, and there wasn't even any particularly spectacular bits of photography either.

Cuba, left me cold frankly, I'm sure it's a fascinating place, an ex colleague went just for the salsa dancing but really, all a bit meh.

On the other hand, even with the degree of personal meh-ness, better than much of the Grand Tour still.

Yes, they both had acrow's, when I saw them I thought I wouldn't want one of those flying around in a crash!

Did suprise me how much didn't make it to the final edit.
Although now having seen how little they re shoot it could be down to content or the shot when finally looked at was something wrong in background.

Also how slick they are at producing this

Ross Noble must of had around 45 minutes of material and all was good, some obviously not deemed appropriate.

Liked the fact Chris did the Stig lap live whilst they played the VT. And it did sound amazing in the studio.

We all came away with the impression, Chris and Matt are ideal for the roles.
Chris was chatting off camera about the cars and pointing things out.
Matt during VT looked engroused in the ones he wasn't involved in and in between takes was sorting out scripts and chatting with Ross. Looked very professional.
Rory looked dissinterested at times.

Can't see how the episode would have been improved with more not less Ross Noble

bit unfair to compare a 20 minute slot feature with an 80 minute full length special though

I enjoyed it again but agree that Reid grates a bit - seems a nice guy but quit the street speak please - "Cuba really putting all out there for us man" or similar such bks
