Steve Wright and serious jockin on radio 2
Discussion
I was quite critical of Steve’s Big Show towards the end of its run. However you cannot deny he was totally devoted to what he did ,and on Pick of the Pops I felt it really suited him.
He truly was a link to our youth in the 80’s and I think that shone through during the POTP shows especially. I can understand the sadness at his death, and his colleagues whom knew him personally and closely are devastated by it. Feel very sad and nostalgic today listening to POTP.

Fascinating insight into his eccentricity and near obsessive work ethic in Last Word R4 yesterday
I have heard before he was in Wogan house early in the morning working on his show all day and the fact he’d fly to America just to listen to radio stations in a hotel over a weekend then return, obviously with the internet he wouldn’t have had to do that but I suppose being married to an American years ago might have started it.I saw Chris Moyles radio X on you tube about SW which is worth a watch, by all accounts he was a genuine bloke and touched a lot in the industry he lived for.
He show had run its course I felt as nothing lasts forever but in his prime he was at the top of the game and obviously devoted his life to presenting a top show daily for decades, we never see any of that just hear them in their usual slots every week.
I didn’t like all the things he did but he was certainly very clever and skilled at what he did.
He played some great music at times, then absolutely ruined it by singing /talking over it ffs. How did he think that was a good idea? He did it all the time.
What did he learn from his trips to America?
Having said that, his replacement is fking terrible.not long after Scot Mills replaced him he announced he was doing an interview with a 50 year old man that hadn’t eaten rice … Jesus fking Christ.

From what i understood, his whole premise right from the start was not about the music, which at the time, was quite a risky thing to say to your potential employer. What did he learn from his trips to America?

Obviously whilst talented in a specific way, SW obvioulsy had some serious blind spots. Health and his lifestyle being one, and doesn't seem very self aware either. Clearly had some work-a-holic tendencies, or a very weird focused perfectionism in one aspect of his life at the expense of all others.

Ken Bruce is appalling. Never understood the reverence for his corny “jokes” and folksy style. Intensely irritating.
Steve Wright was great in the 80s and 90s and nowhere near as bad as some have made out more recently. At least he didn’t make me change channel like Ken Bruce did.
Myself and the millions of listeners who followed Ken to GHR would tend to disagree.Steve Wright was great in the 80s and 90s and nowhere near as bad as some have made out more recently. At least he didn’t make me change channel like Ken Bruce did.
And for me, I was never in danger of having to listen to Steve Wright, Jeremy Vine saw me switching over long before then.
Steve Wright was revolutionary in his day and he changed radio. Had it got a bit tired? Yes, but he was getting on.
Seeing the hate here made me cringe, particularly from old farts who venerated Ken Smug Bruce.
