Weren't a lot of the complaints about this mostly 'wah wah cultural appropriation he should be Asian' stuff?
I'm not sure it's great but a lot of people were anti regardless of the actual quality of the product.
Though the lead actor was complaining he was doing fight scenes with basically no training and getting the details 15 minutes before shooting.

Yep, I think they've dragged it out. It could've easily been told in 10 episodes.
I have only got as far as 10 though.
The main actor is surprisingly good though, despite no obvious martial arts training and physically not looking like he'd spent the last 15 years becoming a "living weapon". It would've been better with an actor with some training though.
He was a white guy in the original comics, so it's not like the Ancient One being played by a white actor.

That didn't stop people arguing about the casting. Something about how it was inappropriate that a white guy should show up and become the great martial artist and it should have been an Asian character all along. A bit like they argued about casting Scarlett Johansson as Major Motoko Kusanagi, who despite the name was drawn as distinctly European.
Binged this over the weekend and thought it was very average and far too similar to Arrow.
The comments from the lead actor regarding the fight sequences seem very true, he doesn't look at all comfortable with most of it and it's also very obvious when they've got a stuntman in a wig doing it instead (often).
Shonky story, weak script, average action sequences and the whole thing just felt rushed so they could have everything in place for the Defenders.
Love both seasons of DD, thought JJ was good but after this and Luke Cage..

I don't get why there is a massive hoo-ha every time this happens anyway. People were apparently unhappy that the ancient one was played by a white girl in Dr Strange, yet did anyone comment that Mordo was cast as a black man in the same movie (he was originally white in the comics).Plenty of comic book characters have switched race in TV/movies from their original comic outing. Sure there will be a few characters where casting somebody of another race would be pretty hard to swallow, since their race pretty much defines their character (e.g. Black Panther - king of the African nation of Wacanda) - but in most cases it doesnt really matter and the chosen actors portrayal of that character is far more important.
I couldn't imagine anybody else in the roles of Nick Fury and Heimdall for example - both actors played their respective parts brilliantly and were great casting choices.

Although Nick Fury was originally drawn white, the Marvel 'Ultimate' comics based the look and persona on Samuel L Jackson. Once they actually got him to play the role, it was probably just a case of asking him to just be Sam Jackson. On topic: I blitzed through Iron Fist in much less time than it would normally take me to binge watch a series. Found it very watchable.
I think it won me over in episode one when he somersaulted the car. I remember him doing that in the comics back in the '70s. It was one of those images that made John Byrne the superstar comic artist of the era.
However, I accept many of the criticisms. They should have sent the main actor on a six month training course to get in shape and practice as many of the fight scenes as possible. They could have cut 2 or 3 hours from it without loosing story or characterisation.

Pity they didnt cast someone like Iko Uwais or Tony Jaa. Both exceptional martial arts actors. Uwais in the Raid 1 and 2 is awesome (his style is pencak silat though not some form of kung fu).
The raid films are just different gravy - that'd be something to watch on the goggle box Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
