Edd China has left Wheeler Dealers
Discussion
Just in case people have missed it, Edd has done an update video:

Kinda strange all round really. His tools and personal belongings are locked up and he can't get at them? Obviously nothing in the pipeline, but one or two interesting suggestions in there. Anyway, watch it, you'll see.
I really hope he is lurking on here, lots of support and respect for the fella. Especially from fellow shaggy haired prematurely greying chaps. Well, this one anyway.

He doesn't say he can't get his belongings - just that he'd need permission to go in, seeing as he doesn't work there now. Although presumably he had arranged the date and time in advance and had the permission, so I guess it was just an excuse to sit in the car and do some Qs! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1TF7bxrXDA

This is true! But I'm a bit of a dwarf at 6ft in comparison (but a skinny hairy giant compared to Mr Brewer).Mark Evans seems to get mentioned quite a bit, that might make an interesting series if it were the right subject. Personally, I'd like to see them do an update of the old Haynes "Build your own sports car for £200" book. But I can see that would have a limited audience. In this 21st century Internet world, there is a lot of mileage on producing YouTube videos. Essentially doing what he was doing already, only without Mr Owdahtyerand. Not so much for the video advertising income, but from the merchandise, sponsorship and Patreon subscriptions. Someone like Edd with a world wide brand could to seriously well out of it.

I guess the issue with all these ideas is that he has to sell the concept to a production company. He if can't find anyone interested in commissioning a show, then he's stuffed. As much as we'd like to see him do more in depth and interesting things on Youtube for example, he's not going to make any money doing it by himself. Video has all the hallmarks of the opening salvo of a video diary of a decent into obscurity and unkempt rantings in a Whetherspoons.
It did seem like the comments of a somewhat desperate and embittered man; a great shame as I've long regarded Edd as the real talent in Wheeler Dealers.Riley Blue said:

I agree. I think for people who like cars he was the essential element of the show but I suspect, as has been mentioned in this thread, that he is the least commercially essential element to the actual show. Which is a huge shame not just for people like us but frankly society as a whole on a wider scale of how modern TV is made and the fkwitted, Wonga'd to the eyeball, orange, semi literate, spaz-gibbons it is designed to cater and pander to. I think you under-estimate how much money YouTube videos make! There are a fair few YT millionaires in the UK already, many of whom don't have any real production or photography experience. I'm pretty sure that Edd could do it solo if he wanted, with nothing more than a garage with a lift, some decent lighting and a DSLR. Add an experienced camera operator and/or an editor, and the whole process would be more streamlined and glossy, but it is by no means essential. Editing into 15 minutes programmes, put out 2 or 3 times a week, every week, and it is amazing how quickly the subscriber base builds up. It doesn't have to be super in-depth nerdy stuff either. Add in occasional guests, live streams and events for Patreon support etc, it really isn't rocket science these days.On top of YT revenue, with merchandising, direct advertising support from wherever (Ebay, GSF, Machine Mart, wherever) and the whole shooting match is massively more efficient and profitable than making programmes for broadcast TV. Potential advertisers can see for themselves how many pairs of eyeballs watch your videos.

I think he could do well on YouTube, especially as he is recognisable in the US. Both Eric The Car Guy and Humble Mechanic earn their sole living from YT now, and their skills are nowhere near Edd's. If he could come up with content that is a cocktail of Mighty Car Mods and Eric The Car Guy he'd be onto a winner I think. On top of YT revenue, with merchandising, direct advertising support from wherever (Ebay, GSF, Machine Mart, wherever) and the whole shooting match is massively more efficient and profitable than making programmes for broadcast TV. Yes, he looks haggard and baggy eyes and all the signs of stress and lack of sleep (flying to California is not hard). To leave the world's biggest motoring show at the peak of its success, as he did, is insane. He will never again get a TV gig that big, even smaller TV producers will be reluctant to work with a prima donna, and he is neither young nor goodlooking nor American nor charismatic enough to become a major YouTube or Insta star. The outlook is grim.Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
