Not sure yet, don't really like the darkness of it, star trek ships are normally light and welcoming not like military nuclear submarines. I know we are only two shows in but it seems to be all about fighting and war.
Also not sure about the Michael Burnham character just didn't have a feeling that she in anyway could have been considered has a second office, just came across like a kid.

As it stands I'm liking The Orville more.

It's Star Trek!
Is it? Only watched the first episode so far, but take away the token nods to old star trek, the species name klingon etc and I certainly wouldnt recognise it at all as star trek, very generic.

I thought it was a good first episode of a new scifi series and I'm going to watch the rest ( at least until it falls apart season 3...)

Klingons as mock Egyptians speaking klingon and the subtitiles grated after a while. Sure give us a few sentences of klingon then switch to growly English please...

I have seen various comments from the producers that the first series will concentrate on the Klingon war which has been referenced various times in the other series but not shown due to the time line.

Come the second series we then get back into more star Trekkie stuff of old

Why confused
Dull cliched plot.
Unlikable characters with no chemistry.
Shocking production values - all lens flare and rotating cameras.
Bludgeoned political correctness.

It has turned Star Trek in to just another dark grim Sci-fi shoot-em-up.

I'm all for change, but this was just poor.
Thanks for expanding on that. Don't get me wrong, I love the way the old ship to ship scenes were done. Slow, majestic and lots of beauty shots, but at the same time, I would be disappointed if it was a clone of the way things were done before. No point re-hashing the old days, that is why Enterprise didn't last in my opinion. It failed to progress.

I am completely indifferent to lens flare. I was not even aware there was any until you pointed it out.

The first two episodes gave us a back story for Michael and set the scene of the universe it is set in. I don't think it will be all about the war, but it is an exciting way to draw people in.

I liked the Captain of the Shenzhou and I am growing to like Michael. She is flawed like Sisko was. Janeway and Picard were a little too righteous at times. Any wooden acting can be put down to her being Vulcan trained wink

I wasn't aware of any political correctness until I was told it was being politically correct. I thought the white Klingon reference was a little odd, but he struck me as being an albino rather than a different race of Klingon. Talking of which, the subtitled scenes need trimming down a bit.

Snap! I have just finished watching the first episode, and the most problematic aspect is the fact that it is Star Trek in name only. All the established roles and the way we expect characters to behave is turned upside down. It really is a reboot, and I spent a good 3/4ths of the episode fighting back my prejudices and having to 'forget' Trek cannon.

My other issue is how modern sci-fi - Battlestar Galactica aside - is treated in terms of visuals and feel i.e. interior looks like an Apple Store. Odd choice of camera angles in the first half of the episode and lens flare reinforce the discombulation between the exterior of the ship (spot on) with the ultra modern, clean and sparse interior re: Apple Store.

The communication channel with Starfleet is completely at odds technology wise with the rest of Star Trek as it has been presented, yet this series is set 10 years before TOS.

As RobDickinson states, not bad thus far in (although I prefer my sci-fi hard), but it isn't Star Trek. Post-script: Upon reflection, I'm going to remove from my Netflix list. It isn't the type of sci-fi that I like; I have quite a few things that I need to watch inc. finishing watching Death Note anime; and as with Star Wars, at this point, I'm done with Star Trek.

Call me if someone decides to commission Federation and Empire.

Something felt off. I didn't really like the characters which doesn't help, it looked good but the tech felt too advanced considering when this is set.
Too many subtitles.

The lead played a snotty unlikeable character in Walking Dead as well so maybe it's just her 'thing'

I'll watch more but not sure how long I'll last.

Liked the effects and design. Nice mix of a modern look on old Star Trek.

Story/script is a bit flat and can't say I find any of the characters likeable.

Hoping it'll improve, we need some good sci-fi

Sure this has been covered. But I'm not convinced about this new Star Trek.

Wtf with the Klingons look. No need for that at all. Not when such an established look across 4 other series and the majority of the films.

Far too much sub text/titles in the first two episodes.

Truly odd and annoying camera angles. And dark dingy horrid sets. Look how bright and easy to view The Orville is by comparison!!!!!

Not sure I get the new look uniforms, sets or ships either. Seems to not have much tie in with established a Star Trek cannon.

And the effects all look dark and rather horrid too. Voyager and DS9 have way better visuals in regards the ships and things. Which shouldn't be he case given the time since they were filmed.

Storyline didn't seem to bad and thankfully nothing like those dreadful remake Trek films of the past few years.

Hoping it'll find its way to being more like the other Series. It needs too.
What, you mean those incredibly popular reboot films that have made Star Trek relevant again and converted millions into fans?

You're living in the past I'm afraid (which I'm sure comes as no surprise to most). smile

In order to do well the new series needs to bring in a whole new generation of fans that are looking for something different from the hokey storylines and wobbly sets of old. Whether it succeeds in doing so time will tell but if they'd stuck to the old formula I guarantee it would never have got commissioned in the first place.

It's certainly true that if the old formula was used, Star Trek would have died with Enterprise.

It's a shame that the show runners don't listen. The overwhelming opinion from fans is that they wanted a post TNG/DS9/Voyager timeline. The way the show looks would of made much more sense, and they could create their own cannon.

It was quite good but after building up the klingons as some sort of mighty merciless warrior race a middle aged asian woman gives several of them a kicking.
The average star trek fan may be offended but you wonder what goes through their heads anyway.
Its amusing to think what they would make of The Orville which is just super fun.

This with bells on, we've had the the original timeline film reboots, we've had Enterprise and now this. They seem to crap themselves and just want to stick with the tried and tested. Stop re-treading old ground and do something new.

I have to agree, they keep going over the same timeline section over and over again. I want post voyager as well, but right now I am just happy that we have star trek back as a TV show where it should be

If it isn't going to be Star Trek. Why bother using the Star Trek name?

The success of the franchise is down to what Star Trek is and was. Plenty of other sci-fi films and series out there with their own identity.

And I really couldn't care less if those reboot films were box office hits or not. As a "Star Trek" film and content they were utterly dreadful. If they had been just generic sci-fi films then they would have been fine. But donning the Star Trek name should have meant them being Star Trek.

To paraphrase they would be like VAG building a trendy fwd diesel rep grade Coupe based on a Golf platform and sticking a Porsche badge on it and claiming to be an awesome drivers machine. Wouldn't mean it'd be a bad car. But no fking way is it a Porsche.

Those dreadful films are exactly this. And I hope the new series isn't more of the same.

Me too, and I'm liking the series so far. That includes the new-look Klingons speaking something other than English for the most part.
