Given that the crew is about 70% female. I wonder what's changed from our current military 10% female.

Because it’s got better plots, is better produced and most importantly you care about the characters. It’s the spiritual successor to previous Star Treks where as Discovery is Trek in name only.

Btw we bailed out of Discovery after episode three as we just weren’t enjoying it. We were finding the plot dull, the characters unlikeable and the camera work vomit inducing.

It's mainly a science vessel isn't it? Might explain it. I'm sure a warship is mostly male.

Timeline wise it’s before the original series but I’m a little confused with the technology, they use replicators, talk directly with the computers etc. I’m really enjoying it but it’s like they really don’t care about it.
Thats a good thing. I for one dont want the trek of previous times. It wouldn’t work today.
Totally agreed; using ToS style technology would have made the show look ridiculous. If someone wants retro looks, head over to Youtube and look for Star Trek Continues (which has generally been pretty good).

Wasn't it in Star Trek 4 that they had Scotty attempting to speak into a Mac via its mouse? (Transparent aluminium FTW!)

A good job we don’t all see things the same way.

My issues are more about this new means of jump drive. Something totally absent in anything else Star Trek. If this set post anything so far, ok. But it’s not.

It also still feels like I’m watching someone play something like Quake4. Journals, video clips. Dark scenes. Things trying to make you jump. Very un-Star Trek.

I also don’t understand why the Klingon ships don’t really look like ships or anything like they should. A big part of Trek for me is the ships. And considering how many models and collections there are out there of Star Trek ships. It’s a big deal for a lot of people.

But these new Klingon ships just look horrid and boring. Nothing I’d want a model of.

The only thing the Orville is missing is the captain going around sexually harassing every female of the species they come across like kirk.

Enjoyed that a lot, yep have to say I'm liking the new direction. I still wish they'd drop the Klingon speech though. It really does grate after a while.

If you watched this latest episode it would appear that the spor based jump drive is not a sustainable means of transport judging by the effect is had on the big bug. Therefore I suspect it will be dropped as a sustainable system if it kills the creature in the process which would be very much against the ethics of Star Fleet. That's why it does not appear in the later series

Yep I vaguely seem to remember that at one point Star Fleet limited the top speed that ships could warp to due to the fact that it was damaging the fabric off the galaxy or some such so ships could only go faster than warp 8 IIRC in an emergency.

Don't forget ST is effectively lefties in space and Star Fleet is run by the descendants of Al Gore. Yes they are in a war but I suspect at some point they'll realise that the spore jumps hurt the big bug and it will cause some friction between Micheal and the gung ho Captain to give it a nice Star Trek character angle but will eventually be banned.

Let me try and answer the question of Discovery series looking too futuristic for what was to follow in TOS, TNG, DS9 and Voyager.

It's not that Discovery looks too futuristic - its that TOS, TNG, DS9 and Voyager no longer look futuristic at all to the modern audience.

Making Discovery 'fit in' with those programs in terms of look and feel would make Discovery almost unwatchable to todays audience. Voyager was last made in 2001.

Ideas and technological innovation are in constant development. You'll just have to get used to this mis-match or clash between the look and feel of the tech displayed for the greater good of getting new Star Trek.

If it helps, use JJ Abrahams reconciliation trick of placing this series in an alternate reality.

Star Fleet are not the only people in other series. Would seem odd that there is jump drive aka hyperspace technology that evidently works. When 80-100 years on people are still using warp and investigating transwarp drives. Seems like it’s an idea from a different franchise and not Star Trek.

Personally I think pretty much everything you’ve said in this thread is utter nonsense. And that’s being polite.

I don't know, I think the thing about the drive adds up fine. If the drive only works with the bug beast installed, and using the bug beast harms or kills it, then the drive isn't viable. So it doesn't appear later in the Star Trek timeline.

And I think your posts suffer from a complete lack of any thinking, understanding or imagination. And I couldn’t care less whether that’s polite or not.
