Can anyone give me a brief synopsis of what happened in the second half of last night's episode? Unfortunately I fell asleep and missed the last 10 mInutes.

She went to the gardener/driver lads pad...and they had a 'proper' session on the bed.

I'm not clear what happened to Ofglen (Alexis Bledel) when she was incarcerated; was it explained at any point? It seemed to be referred to as some sort of operation but I might be wrong.

I presumed it was FGM to remove all the pleasurable side to sex.

Hmm. It seems a bit odd given she was hauled in for collaborating with the resistance (I think). You would have thought she would have been knocked off or "sent to the colonies"

She was hauled in for being a lesbian. Women who can breed are far to valuable to the establishment to remove them from the gene pool so they punished her in the most 'appropriate' way possible without affecting her ability to breed. See also removing one eye from one of the trainee breeders earlier in the story.

Kind of enjoying this, but the story development is a bit slow, maybe too many shots of Offred's 'tormented' facial expressions and the tension is a bit relentless.

There's slow paced and there's glacial and I must admit I spend large amounts of my time on my phone while watching this.

The missus often falls asleep biggrin

Good that we're starting to get a bit of back story now...
So it seems the host family are the ones who instigated the fall of the previous government? I assume the overseas visitors are part of the same religious cult and are looking to take or have taken power? Who was that bloke who offered to help, resistance maybe?

It's still a bit tricky to follow.

I must admit the shifts in the timeline are making it a bit difficult & I didn't realize I had skipped an episode until someone replied to the nonsense I posted above. It's not earth shattering but better than most of the dross that is on these days.

I don't see why her husband would be still alive though as they don't need him. It's a plot twist that doesn't have anything to support it other than to be an element of surprise.

Will be interesting to see if he is still alive or there's something else going on with the Mexican 'Assistant'.

After almost loosing me last week, this picked up well this time and has re-engaged my interest.

I see Elisabeth Moss is in something else on BBC2 soon too.

I always felt she was the star of the rather directionless Mad Men, so glad to see hear getting some starring roles.

Top of the Lake - it's the second series, starting in September, which is being trailed.

Series 1 was on a few years ago - I seem to remember watching the first couple of episodes (of 6) and thinking it was quite good, but never quite got around to finishing it. Probably because I couldn't interest SWMBO in it and I never found the time to watch it on my own! biggrin

It's being re-run starting at 11.05 on BBC 2 this Friday night, if you want to see it in readiness for the new one.

I binge watched all 10 episodes via slightly hookey means after watching and really enjoying Ep1 on C4.

You're right about the Waterfords having been part of the coup that overthrew the previous government. The answer to your second question is answered in the next episode! I won't elaborate, even in spoilers, as I know they sometimes don't work in the mobile version.

I'm not sure they instigated it but they are certainly high up in the current government and so clearly had a role in the revolution as the flashbacks seem to suggest.

I don't think the Mexicans are anything to do with the cult because I can't imagine such a cult allowing a woman to be an ambassador. There was a brief mention in one of the earlier episodes about UN sanctions against Gilead and in this episode the commander mentioned the currency was on the verge of collapse. From this I take it that only the US has gone down this route and the rest of the world is carrying on as normal and is naturally horrified by the turn of events so have been forced to hit them with sanctions.

However the environmental issues that caused this clearly affect the whole world as the Mexican lady said that in her city no babies had been born in however many months so it seems there is a major issue affecting the whole world and while the Yanks have gone down this road, desperation is driving other nations to start to talk to them and negotiate access to the handmaids.

I think she said 6 years, but what I didn't get was why the US would have more 'viable births' than anywhere else?

There doesn't seem to be any reason for the US to be in a position to trade their Handmaids for chocolate or anything else, but maybe that will be explained...

Possibly because the theocratic state and reduced human rights enables them to put their "selective breeding" program in place, and increase the chances of viable births, rather than leaving it to chance as the more liberal countries are doing?

Any thoughts on last night's episode?
It seems to have slowed down again with nothing really significant happening, other than the bridge incident.
Isn't next week the last one?
