5th weekend at #1 in the US, only 3 films have done that in the last 20 years. It's a few days away from passing The Avengers as the highest grossing superhero movie of all time.
Regardless of what you think of the movie that's pretty darn impressive for a debut 'single' superhero movie in the MCU.
not bad at all for a 'mediocre' filmRegardless of what you think of the movie that's pretty darn impressive for a debut 'single' superhero movie in the MCU.
I wonder how many 'mediocre' films have achieved that before

Anecdotally it still seems to be performing so strongly in the US partly on the back of multiple repeat viewings. 4, 5 and 6 viewings don't appear to be uncommon. Obviously plenty of people who think it's a little better than mediocre.I wonder how many 'mediocre' films have achieved that before

Avatar?
THat actually popped in my head too...so I checked the list.Furious 7 is at number 6.
Taking nothing away from Black Panther, I can't, still not seen it, but most of the top ten (non-adjusted) is mediocre, and I actually like Avatar.
but not as much as i liked MCU BP

I can't comment on the quality of Black Panther, as I have not seen it. Part of its popularity at the moment is that it is competing against nothing. The Spring timeframe, until Memorial Day at the end of May, is one of the doldrums of movie releases. Same for the period between the end of Summer and the release of Oscar contenders in the Nov/Dec timeframe. The only other big movie at the moment is a remake of Tomb Raider with a bit of a B grade lead.

It would be interesting to see how it would have caired if another F&F was released at the same time.Although I feel sorry for anything released at the same time as Infinity War

As we had already met Black Panther I was hoping for a bit more of an action film. The debut films can be a bit dull going through the back story.

RLM have their review up now. So it's pretty decent, but not the second coming that most critics are praising it as.

RLM seem to hit the nail on the head for me with all of their reviews.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8kmzvqMEXI
A long list of the superlatives from other reviews, so Jay what did you think, it was OK
If anyone has questioned on any other threads why Studios put "political" messages in their movies, this is why, an average MCU movie is hailed as the second coming.
It is not the worst MCU movie. Thor 2 and Avengers 2 were both considerably worse IMO, but this is not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination. The benchmark for me with comic book movies was The dark Knight and this doesn't even get close.
To rate it as great you have to ignore the rather dull action scenes, the main plot only starting about an hour in with virtually no setup, and the very dull set designs. Wakanda had like three sets, one street, the throne room and the lab.
I don't trust "professional critics" anymore and only really put my faith in people like the RLM guys.
Blade has been mentioned on this thread.
Parallels between the two movies, both black super heroes in a genre dominated by white superheroes.
Who here, who has seen both, would argue that Black Panther was better than the first Blade movie?
Blade for me had much richer world building and more compelling action scenes. To my knowledge Blade isn't being taught in schools
