Marvel's Black Panther

Isn’t that a bit of a contradiction with so many having an issue with Black Panther being nominated, then? Damned if they do, damned if they don’t, particularly so with popular films which almost by definition are going to have a broader range of opinions aimed at them. For what it’s worth, away from PH I’ve not seen too much negativity towards BP being nominated, quite the opposite in fact and hopefully a sign that the planned ‘popular film’ category will die a painful death before its ever introduced.
This is the first time three $200m (US) box office movies have been nominated, so the diversification of the membership has certainly had an impact in terms of bringing bigger films into the mix.
As always with these things, it’s down to how heavily the studios promote them ‘for your consideration’, how many screeners they send out and whatever films gain traction, and obviously Black Panther is going to tick all those boxes comfortably as it’s hard to understate just how much of a cultural moment that film was in the US (it made more money than Infinity War!)
It’s well known that academy members will mostly only vote for films that they think will make the cut, otherwise it’s a ‘wasted vote’, so a self-fulfilling prophecy in many respects. Get Out aside (a film which gained plenty of traction), horror is massively overlooked as many members won’t even watch them, so the likes of Toni Collette in Hereditary don’t stand a chance despite it being widely regarded as one of the best acting performances of the year.
I also agree with a lot of this. You're right that BP had a huge cultural impact, and as I have said previously in this thread there are a lot of different ingredients that make something worth rewarding. This is the first time three $200m (US) box office movies have been nominated, so the diversification of the membership has certainly had an impact in terms of bringing bigger films into the mix.

I also think the awards have rightly been called out for being a bit up them selves, and maybe BP being nominated is a sign of coming change, with more audience popular movies getting a look in again. If that happens then great.
I can't shake the impression it is all a bit neat though.
I will have to place a bet for it winning - what are the odds for that today?
33/1 - I reckon worth a punt.

Can't imagine why this 'average' Marvel film about the Black Panther starring a mainly black cast won two awards. Oh, there again...
If you don't think the award was justified I think you should say why, rather than implying it is all race.In the two categories it won I think you can easily make PBs case.

(that reply was tongue in cheek btw...try and remain calm)

its actually insulting to everyones intelligence that this very average film has been even nominated.
they are behaving as if this is the first film to feature black people in a positive light.
Sidney Poitier was in films going back to the 50s who's reponse was far more mature and less idiotic than the hysterical reaction to this pile of s h i t e

Pile of S h I t e is a bit strong. It is your typical Marvel movie and suffers from the usual drawbacks of them, which only a few rise above, principally weightless action and a CGI w*nkfest to end. they are behaving as if this is the first film to feature black people in a positive light.

Right. But it won best cast and best stunts, which is perfectly plausible for an average film. It does have an excellent cast and a lot of stunts, after all.I hope it doesn't win the Oscar for best picture but it absolutely should for best score imo, again, being an average film doesn't preclude you from having the best music.
For the Academy, at least, the film must run for 7 consecutive days in LA between Jan 1st and Dec 31st of the previous year. Most award ceremonies have a similar set up.
Many films in with a shot will do that, then have a wide release in December or January (the following year) to gain as much exposure as possible as voting opens.
As far as I'm aware, the membership is still at least 85% white, it was 94% a few years back, and most of those male.

Would have been quicker for you to type nothing and yet here we are. Not that the release date would have given the answer anyway.ukaskew said:

Thanks for that, seems a very limited entry requirement but no different to a lot of competitions I guess. Many films in with a shot will do that, then have a wide release in December or January (the following year) to gain as much exposure as possible as voting opens.
