Sometimes it is legit. I have some faith in Martin Brundle's opinions in V/O on F1... but Lineker is just an anchor.
That's complete rubbish. Lineker fills much the same role as Brundle. He provides insights an opinions, that carry weight based on the fact that he's been there and done it. Lineker will have a limited shelf life, based on the increasing gap from when he stopped playing and the game today. Which is why Hansen and Lawrenson have made way fro Shearer, Murphy et al. Sooner or later he will be replaced by the likes of Lampard who has more recent experience.
But well spoken, presentable, intelligent, former top flight footballers is not a large pool, believe me.
Lineker is an anchor and speaks for the equivalent of one lap of a formula one race. Brundle talks for over 3 hours before during and after. Don't get me wrong, I think Lineker is fine and does a great job, he's just not 5 times better than others that do the same job for 1/5 of the money. IMHO of course.

Quite - MOTD is an excellent BBC show - well researched, well presented and not dumbed down to the yoof of todayBut well spoken, presentable, intelligent, former top flight footballers is not a large pool, believe me.
Replacing Lineker will be very difficult IMHO, Lampard being a prime example of an almost candidate. Excellent footballer, has all the experience, relatively thoughtful, but can't speak proper, and has none of the easy charm and presenting skills of GL (not sure they can be taught easily)

Next you will be telling us people like Alan Green, John Motson cannot be commentators as they haven't played either...

As already discussed, the main presenter does not need to have been a professional footballer (as per Linekers highly successful predecessor), it is the job of the pundits to analyse not the presenter.

highly unlikely as I didn't say the first comment eitherNext you will be telling us people like Alan Green, John Motson cannot be commentators as they haven't played either...

Every time these pop up it just annoys me, I know it's just the market rate and so on, not mentioning that the BBC will have huge influence on such market.
But are these people really worthy of being the highest paid public sector workers? More that our leaders, brain surgeons, doctors and so on. If anything after Covid most have shown themselves up to be brain dead morons.

How is it the market rate for most of those jobs? I would suggest they are very much at the top end of the scale. But are these people really worthy of being the highest paid public sector workers? The BBC has no need to chase ratings why do we need to pay radio DJ's massive salaries?

The 'market' doesn't exist.
