He made people feel relaxed and comfortable in his presence and as a result got some amazing admissions. Didn't he make Mrs Thatcher cry once?.

Just putting it out there, if you think that she is that bad, why are you listening? Other radio stations are available!!

indeed..most of Radio 2 is dreadful at weekends...though Tarbuck is mostly tolerable, the only thing I can usually stand on a Sat, and of course Walker the legend on a Sun, other than those the rest of the weekend is not great IMHO..thank goodness for Internet radio.

Listening to Blackburn at the moment, dear mother of god. Oh how I miss Desmond. Don't even get me started on Alan Carr and Mel Sykes - how and why?!
I quite like Tony Blackburn. Proper old school DJ, very slick. Agree about Alan Carr though. Utter st.
TB is bloody awful. He hasn’t changed since the sixties, and he was crap then. Awful ‘humour’ and banal chat. Another one they should put out to grass.
He was put out to grass for years. God only knows why they brought him back. Certainly not public demand.

For me, Huey Morgan is the best R2 presenter. Shame he's hidden away in the early hours. No inane drivel, just good music and just enough verbals.
Ah, but what about Charlie Chester and his Sunday Soapbox? - proper radio, that was.

"With a box full of records and a bag full of post, it's radio Soapbox and Charlie your host!"

Still doesn't explain why you would choose to listen to something that you don't like!! Seems an odd thing to do.

If I don't like listening to something I change to something else. Simplistic I know, but it seems to work quite well for me.

We are having trouble with Liza Tarbuck..... why is she on the radio? Why are people who arent DJs being used? She cannot present. She is self indulgent and cant even read her script without error and stupid voices. Very very annoying woman who we cannot work out how she came to be famous anyway other than the obvious...its not what you know etc etc... bring back real DJs instead of famous names with no talent for the job!

Not necessarily, you don't have to buy a TV licence to listen to BBC radio!

Why do people trot out this same fatuous comment time and time again? You could say the same for football, which I hate with a passion. I don't feel the need to pass negative comments on the countless football threads about it. I just don't watch it. Even if I am 'entitled' (sic) to my view by way of your 'tax'.

Not really, you watch football for the drivel that it is, not the commentator. With radio, you're listening to the music, regardless of how bloody annoying the DJ is but the commentators in football are beginning, middle or end. On radio, it's every 4 minutes. Additionally, football is aimed at a specified market, radio is aimed at the general population...apart from Elaine Paige which is aimed at the deaf and foolish.

Silly analogy. Sports commentators can wind people up EXACTLY the same as DJs. There have been umpteen threads over the years on PH on the merits or not of certain commentators - just like the ones here on certain DJs.

PS - I like Elaine Paige. There- I've said it.

OK, silly analogy. Substitute 'Radio 1' for 'football'. My comments still stand.

For the love of God don't let let this dissolve into a BBC/tax/not tax debate.
