They were talking about fish and chip shops on Steve Wright last week.

Steve: "I go to what is undoubtedly the best fish and chip shop in the world.......and all my friends agree".

It's the last bit that got me. So all Steve Wright's friends must live within a short distance of that particular shop or at least have tried the food there. Every single one of them! Perhaps he only has a couple of friends. Perhaps the friends were only agreeing that Steve Wright goes there.

Anyway, Gary Davies replaced Steve Wright yesterday. It's probably 30 years since I last heard him. If I don't hear him again for another 30 years, it will be too soon.

He's been a dough boy for years although R2 were using a pic on his profile from when he was about 15st lighter.

It’s a 45min slot of silly pish taking radio playing music “of its type” from back in the day.

If you really “hate” gentle easy going sillyness then ffs grow up/get a grip/have a word with yourself or whatever the current favourite ph phrase is.

It’s not a slot for hardcore music types or audiophiles it’s just a slot for ppl to enjoy a bit of silly Friday.

I rather like it.
It's the equivalent of the bloke down the pub who thinks he's funny...but everyone just thinks he's annoying.
Steve Wright is from the last of the summer wine/open all hours/the two ronnies etc era - funny back in the day, but not really now. It was a good show in the 80's...even groundbreaking. The phone guests like Mr Angry, Linda Lust, hopeless weather girl etc etc were excellent (were being the key here).

I think in summary - Steve Wright is just annoying, as is Chris Evans, Nick Grimshow and most women DJs on the radio . Whereas Simon Mayo and Ken Bruce have been going forever, but get away with it because they aren't annoying.

...and since we all pay for the show in our TV license fee, we're allowed to moan.

I don't think Steve Wright was doing anything that Kenny Everett hadn't done earlier and better. When I first heard him I thought, oh he's just an Everett wannabe; little did I know he'd still be inflicting it on us 35 years later.

Hi Steve
Irony. Saying “Hi xxx” when someone stands up for a person is as tired as dropping the ‘g’.
You are Steve Wright AICMFP.

Is there anything else on Radio 2 that people listen to besides Steve Wright?
Chris Evans - tolerable
Ken Bruce - excellent, all stops for Popmaster
Jeremy Vine - Daily Mail nutcases, awful. He’s clearly an intelligent man but puts on this annoying nativity/ stupidity in order to stir up an argument.
Steve Wright - absolutely awful, however he has sufficient listeners who ‘love the show’ to outnumber the PH cognoscenti who hate him with a passion.
Simon Mayo - also excellent
My feelings too, though I don’t think JV is that intelligent.....

The last item on todays Jeremy Vine show is well worth listening to on iplayer, for the barbed comment of the century. His "guest" was a militant vegan primed with a weaponised level of self-righteousness.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09p9s7h Item starts at 1:35:40

1:44:45 is where it starts if the militant vegan irritates you to the point of insanity.

I was in the car at the time and absolutely roared with laughter at JV's throwaway comment. He's going to get absolutely hammered for that comment, if any vegans have their brains engaged hehe

I do often wonder if JV show is tongue-in-cheek and mildly satirical.

If you can't access the iplayer, spoiler here

Good lord - proper mental.

I do think a lot of it is tongue-in-cheek and JV passively takes the piss a lot of the time, without the Daily Mail types realising it.

Me too. The exaggerated emphasis and affected intonation have me reaching for the channel selector button as soon as he starts the show - “and we go over to (insert name) in the newsroom for the VERY latest news.....”. rolleyesfurious

BBC have made a great clusterfk today with their changes to Simon Mayo's show. In order to shoe-in Jo Whiley they've got rid of sidekick Matt together with Foodie Nigel. Also means no more book club, Dr Mosh, homework sucks and Tunesday.

I listened to that this evening and it was all rather sad. Simon Mayo's show is (was) excellent. I was on a long drive home and also listened to Bob Harris for an hour but after 3 songs on Jo Whilley's programme I turned to Magic. Her choice of music was crap. I just can't see how they will shoe her into Simon Mayo's laid back approach to his programme? All the while Steve "no fking G" Wright carries on unhindered!

yes Sad indeed. I’ll still listen as I think Simon Mayo is the best broadcaster on the radio, but there’s something about Jo Whiley that really grates on me. Don’t get me started on Steve Wright. He can stick his ‘Serious Jockin’ up his arse and his tedious, unfunny and sycophantic crew can fk right off too.

I still can't understand why they didn't just replace Steve Wright with Jo Whiley. They stuff her into the only show on R2 that doesn't need any changes and manage to force another bunch of listeners to leave.

I've now officially given up on R2, there is nothing there for me now. I've moved to streaming from my phone (due to DAB being so shocking where I live) with either Spotify or Tune In Radio and pick the station I want.

On the Simon Mayo pages on Facebook I have only seen one person in favour of the changes compared to hundreds against.
