Yes, I agree. When he's replaced by anyone from Tarrant to Charles to Anyone-else it improves immeasurably.
Tarrant!!!! You have got to be joking. Whenever he is on I can virtually smell the stench of fish coming out of my radio!! IMHO worst presenter ever on radio - even from his Capital Radio breakfast show days.

I enjoy Craig Charles when he sits in but I'm not sure that his style really fits daytime radio. He's more of an evening DJ, particularly with the type of music he plays.

There is a burgeoning collection of DJs I can't abide and Charles is one of them, just doesn't suit daytime radio.
Most stand-ins are terrible and I have some sympathy when you're a stop-gap and not in a groove (worn-out in Wright's case).
Not even Trevor Nelson can hack it.
I very rarely stay on Radio 2 when they have a stand-in and Sarah Cox is a dead cert station switcher.
Michael Ball is dreadful and he got his own show.

I did enjoy Gary Davies though, fair play and Ken Bruce and Jonny Walker are both great.

The guy who periodically stands in for Vine (Paddy O' Connell) is far better than the overpaid (£700k+ pa eek) and arrogant tosspot. Which reminds me, Jon Culshaw's impressions of Vine on Steve Wright's show are most excelllent. Unlike the show.

Again, another evening radio DJ who's regular show I love and which suits him and his music tastes well. This week as a stand in for Ken Bruce he has been pretty terrible - particularly on Pop Master.

It's a guy called Lewis Mcleod who does the vine impression. Funny as fk.

Cringeworthy listening to him on Pop Master, still 1000 times better than Fearne Cotton.

How the flip does Steve Wright have any listeners? His 'top jocking' nonsense is just awful.

FWIW I like Evans, Cox and Nelson and Craig Charles is good but even better on R6. R2 needs some work, though.
'top jocking'? 'SERIOUS JOCKIN' - no 'G'!

They had some shocking substitutions and one-offs over Christmas.

Accidentally tuned into Shirley Ballas on Boxing Day, I don't mind the "Strictly" music she was playing, but her speaking bits inbetween were dire. Who at the BBC thinks it's OK to just jam their "TV talent" on the radio and expect it to work? They have got several good presenters around their regional stations who do a weekly show of the same sort of music, if that's the tunes they wanted on R2 why not give one of those experienced guys a big break and let them fill the national slot just once.

Craig Charles and Trevor Nelson don't work on R2 for me but that's more to do with their "late night" style not really fitting into daytime.

Sara Cox, I don't know how she has managed to stay on the BBC gravy train for so long, no redeeming features at all for me. Again I'm certain that they've got no shortage of decent presenters scattered around the regional stations who would be more than capable and possibly even shine, if the BBC would stop jamming Cox into every vacant slot all the time.

I know, I know, I just want Ken Bruce 24 hrs a day really laughlaugh
I don't mind Graham Norton on a Saturday either.

I like Sara Cox on in the morning - prefer her to the usual noise. Graham Norton is definitely a winner and I do love his Saturday show when I hear it, but Jo Whiley stands head and shoulders above them all in her 8-10pm slot...

I quite like Sarah Cox too, in fact I prefer her to Chris Evans. She’s very quick witted and often produces an amusing anecdote or bit of nostalgia off the cuff.

Another vote for Sara from me too. Far far better than the self centered shouty Evans.

As soon as he returns I'll be tuning back to Gem 106 on the drive to work.

Disagree, he’s got a great, self-deprecating style and sharp wit, and his banter with Lynn is great.

Best DJ by a country mile. Fantastic face for radio. He has that lilt that Wogan used to have and a similar sharpness of wit.
Evans is just shouty and sucks up to the public, Wright is "The Sun" of radio media, Vine is a cringeworthy slimeball.

Listen to Michael Ball, Zoe Ball and Trevor Nelson trying to do it and the monumental skill becomes obvious.

Agreed. Ken Bruce and to a certain extent Simon Mayo both have a very, very finely tuned sense of what's amusing, witty and suitable for the wide audience their respective time slots attract.
Simon Mayo.....his Friday request show he goes effortlessly from talking to pre-school kids to 30-something single girls to retired policemen to minibuses full of lads on the lash for a weekend. Not an easy audience but he cracks it, and makes it amusing at the same time.
The fact their efforts aren't that obvious is testimony to how good they are at their trade.
