Has to be The beach landing SPR, the realism was unnervingly accurate.
Also agree with othe posters that Das Boot had nail biting tension.
Lastly for me the final scene in American Sniper was very emotional.

This creeping barrage. Now those are proper sized bangs!
Lead tank on E8 suspension, inaccurate for the period of the battle.

Black Hawk Down for me. Two scenes particularly stand out. Firstly, the two soldiers who abseil down to defend one of their own after a helicopter crash. The scene stands out for me. Secondly, Eric Bana in one of the last scenes where he talks of why he does it, as he heads back out almost immediately after one of the longest and deadliest battles in modern US warfare

As has been said many times, the opening shots of SPR would take some beating, but one scene that I remember, is in the remake of "Red Badge of Courage", with Richard Thomas, (John-Boy Walton), as the 18 y.o. Union private, Henry Fleming.
In the first battle that his New York regiment are in, after trading volleys with each other, the Confederates retreat, and the Federals whoop for joy.
Suddenly the Federal lieutenant shouts, "Here they come again boys!"
The Southerners keep on coming, and hit the Union line like a battering ram, and the Yankee boys run like jack rabbits.

I was wondering that too.

Lots of 'great' scenes already mentioned.

If we're doing dusty, then the end of Gallipoli takes some beating.

The closing scene of Blackadder is worthy of mention also.

Saving private Ryan, beach landing.
Another +1. An amazing bit of cinematography, all the more disturbing given how close it probably reflects reality. Everyone needs to sit through that scene at some point. Probably one of the most immersive bits of cinema I've sat through, and one that stays with you.
Same for me too. Epic scene.

However, I'm also a huge fan of the first barracks scene in Full Metal Jacket. R Lee Emery is mesmerising as the drill sergeant in that film.

Wouldn't you expect to see the barrels being elevated as the barrage creeps forwards?

For sheer gung-ho-edness (it's a word) you can't beat the hot extract from Act of Valour. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrtt.

Trivia - the Miniguns were live firing during the filming of that scene.
I thought that thread title is "Best war film scene" not "Best Call of Duty level"?
And those miniguns are never live-firing.
They do far more damage.

I saw a documentary about Saving Private Ryan around the time the movie came out. It included contributions from veterans who had actually been there. One said he'd seen films about D-Day landings before, none were particularly accurate but SVP... the opening scene. He said, that's exactly what it was like...

For me, Full Metal Jacket, as others have said, the open scene. I remember the first time I saw it... gripping, mesmerising and funny. And it was ad libbed!!! Kubrick didn't script it
http://m.imdb.com/title/tt0093058/trivia

The sniper scene is another gripping moment. The whole movie is just fantastic.

Agreed. I'd be EXTREMELY suprised if they are live. Unless some very clever manipulation of perspectives is going on.

Source: have fired 1000s of rounds through a minigun.

I suppose from half way the whole thing is a battle scene.
Great film that. IIRC there is a great review of it on IMDB from a veteran who fought in that battle.

Better yet (IMO) read the true story of La Drang written by Lt General Hal Moore (played by Gibson in the movie), recounted in We Were Soldiers Once...and Young.

Apparently they couldn't get the desired effect using blanks (barrel heat soak, tracer mix etc.). Watch it again, you are right about the camera perspectives. The whole movie is shot using a real SEAL team rather than actors, which accounts (partly) for the wooden acting and dodgy storyline, but more than made up for by the action scenes. Somehow actors never look right pretending to be soldiers. Also, the movie took years to film as the teams rather inconveniently kept getting deployed.

Edit:

I'll see your 1000 rounds of experience and raise you sources:
