The last scene in Angels one five where "Tiger" Small (Jack Hawkins) tells "Septic" Baird (John Gregson)...."Message received and understood, over and out".

Has to be The beach landing SPR, the realism was unnervingly accurate.
Silly question but how do you know?
Have been under rather similar fire both small arms and artillery
Goose Green and Wireless Ridge, Op Corporate 1982
Good stuff, There was a BBC documentary in the 90s which i can't recall the name of that was supposed to be quite accurate about that.

Too many to pick one.

Black Hawk Down from when the choppers are being hunted by the RPG's and dropping to when the two guys drop down to help the downed pilot.

Private Ryan opening, of course.

Das Boot hiding from the destroyer or coming home to the wrecked pens.

I like Downfall/Untertag when Weidling is ordered to the bunker to be shot for retreating westward, despite not moving from the front line.

"I have to see the Fuhrer"
"what for?"
"I am to be shot"
"wait here..."

then later-

"congratulations, your report really impressed the Fuhrer. He has appointed you commander of Berlin's defence."
"I'd rather have been shot." hehe

Or when the Hitler Youth girl asks to be shot. I like loads from Downfall actually.

The Dambusters:-

Jobsworth official at the Ministry of Aircraft Production:

" You say you need a Wellington Bomber for test drops. They're worth their weight in gold. Do you really think the authorities will lend you one? What possible argument could I put forward to get you a Wellington? "

Barnes Wallis

" Well, if you told them I designed it, do you think that might help?"

Gibraltar scene in Das Boot... Sinks to 280 metres onto a "shovel full of sand" and the long repairs that follow, eventually raising the submarine. Most realistic war film I've ever seen, complete opposite of Hollywood nonsense like "Fury".
Best. Film. Ever.

The main battle scene in Tae Guk Gi a Korean War epic well worth checking out.
Another Korean war film called "71 into the Fire" is quite impressive too. The battle scene at the start is brutal.

Good call on Downfall, the scene where Hitler raves about being banned from Xbox Live really brings home the futility of warfrown

Never been too sure about the SPR opener, the lack of ships in the background takes me out of it a bit.

Some that stand out for me:
The tank attack in Cross of Iron
BOB the D-Day take off
Flight of the Intruder night flying scenes

Memphis Belle when another B17 gets hit by flak and you see it slowly start spiralling down. The intercom has been left on and the crew of Memphis Belle hear the screams of the stricken B17's crew until someone quickly turns it off.

That scene has always stuck with me as I imagine the terror of being trapped in a bomber unable to get out as it falls to the ground.

They were rookies too, their first mission. Terrifying end to young lives.

This thread is telling me I haven't watched anywhere near enough war films!

Picking a favourite is very difficult too. Action scene? Tense dialogue scene? Not sure I can settle one way or another.

I'll just go with one that has popped into my head. Hans Landa's interrogation in the farmhouse at the beginning of Inglourious.

The opening cannon battle between the HMS Surprise and the Acheron, with the Surprise barely surviving a heavy cannon attack.
What a great film! I've watched it 3 times!

The Dambusters....

Wallis: [Morning after the raid] Is it true? All those fellows lost?

Gibson: Only two aircraft went down in the attacks. That was Hopgood's over the Moehne and Maudsley's at the Eder. Astell got it soon after crossing the coast. And Dinghy Young was shot down over the sea, on his way home. The rest we don't know about. They've been calling them since midnight, but they haven't answered. The flak was bad. Worse than I expected.

Wallis: [upset] Fifty-six men... If I'd known it was going to be like this, I'd never have started it.

Gibson: Now you mustn't think that way. If all these fellows had known from the beginning they wouldn't be coming back they would have gone for it just the same. There isn't a single one of them that would have dropped out. I knew them all. I know that's true. Look, you've had a worse night than any of us. Why don't you find the doctor and ask for one of his sleeping pills?

Wallis: [Shakes head] Aren't you going to turn in, Gibby?

Gibson: No, I... I have to write some letters first.

[Gibson walks off into distance. Theme music. Roll credits]
