I wasn’t expecting that at all, outstanding.
Wasn’t keen on Gosling until seeing him in this, he was superb in every way.
Hard act to follow as original Bladerunner is in my top 5,
Didn’t want it to end, great film....

I felt the same. I absolutely love the original.

I felt underwhelmed by it. The story was good but I thought the music was really lacking, I found myself playing the original music in my head to some scenes.
Agree I found myself playing the original over cityscape etc bits.

Rereading the comments since I watched it I really don't get the love.

Apparently some deep rumblings & the odd token plink on a Yamaha CS-80 make for a fitting soundtrack.
I thought it a real missed opportunity.

I can understand Zimmer not bothering to 'compete' with Vangelis, but his efforts are one of the new film's weakest components, along with the meandering pacing.

Still give it 8.5/10 though.

I'm not sure, I just assumed they'd used cgi for it, I think there was a credit for an actress as Rachel face/body double or something.Whatever it was, the face looked a bit smooth, shiny and not animated as well, and slightly the wrong shape or something. Thankfully it wasn't large on-screen for long so it didn't really spoil anything.

Edit - looks like cgi over another actress's face:

I saw it again yesterday and I was struggling to tell if it was CG. If it is, it's certainly better than the stuff in Rogue One

I thought these were great but...

They were there as a nod towards Joi's existence and origins, tacky ways of staying alive after a human has died? A reminder of some of PKD's themes: what is it to be human, a time to die, etc. It would have been meaningful - and fun - for Joi to have reflected on her own existence more.

I think that Joi was a great addition to the themes of PKD's world, and she was underexploited. There was so much that could have been done to relate hologram AI to replicant to human. Instead we wasted time on Leto and his all-seeing flying fish, and a secret replicant cult. Both of which just wander off before the (terrible) ending. WTF!
agree about the ending. Everything from the fight in the submerging car onwards was bobbins. When the credits rolled in silence everyone just seemed to get up and leave in an underwhelmed silence.
+1 on the ending. It all just seemed rather rushed. Just as you thought there was going to be some kind of big moment that tied everything together the film sorta fizzled out.

I'm still in two minds about the film. I'm a huge fan of the original so any attempt to revisit it is always going to be 'dangerous' for me. I thought the cinematography and overall look and feel of the universe was almost perfect. This made me happy. A couple of the crowd scenes seemed a little underpopulated and I was a little upset that there were umbrellas but they didn't have neon handles! But overall, very good indeed. Jared Leto's character was quite annoying with the rather OTT sadism, the random blindness and the various unexplained, pointless things like the ear chip thing and the floating black robo-fish. The replicant liberation front or whatever they were - turned up too late in the movie and didn't really seem to do much to drive the plot forward. And there were too many coincidences. Like, why is the we that the hologram procures the same one that has been tasked with 'finding information' - she takes the opportunity to plant the tracker but it seems odd that she only completes her mission because hologirl invites her into the house - if that hadn't happened then presumably the replicant liberation lot would never have been able to track down Joe?

The music on this one is more 'epic movie/mood' music whereas the original score was also damn good music in and of itself (as well as being a great film soundtrack) - it's one of my most listened to albums.

That said, I've been listening to the new soundtrack on youtube and it's pretty good if you are in the right frame of mind and you like Hans Zimmer's style. I don't think I'll be listening to it as much as the Vangelis original though.

Went to see it tonight, loved it, it didn't seem a long film to me. I'm a big fan of the first and have the collectors box set, so popped that in a few days ago to get up to speed again. This has to be one of the best sequels ever made.

When I saw the first one in my yoof, I got a massive crush on Sean Young. biggrin

How stunning is Ana de Armas (Joi) in this film, they made her look incredible. I'm far too old for the crush thing now but she made an impression. biggrin

Great film.

I went Sunday, taking my Dad who is also a big fan of the original.

I was worried about the running time and some of the early comments on this thread. There was no need. I was transfixed from beginning to end, still thinking about it 3 days on and have the soundtrack on repeat.

I can barely think of anything to criticise. It just ticked all the boxes. I love how it lead you gently to figure out what had happened in the years that had passed without telegraphing everything early on. It felt like a film made with real love and attention. It was also so nice to watch a film without scatter gun cuts and edits that lingered on the subject.

I hope Scott watched this and learned a lesson about how to approach reviving a franchise and staying true to the style and concepts.

Slightly worried there's talk of a third film, striking gold 3 times in a row is a big ask.

She was outdone by Luv, IMO - she somehow conveyed a sense of demure classiness and yet came across as a bit hard faced and council as well.

I've been listening to the 2049 soundtrack too and think my favourite pieces are Someone Lived This and Blade Runner.

It looked very CGI to me. Not poorly so, but the animation of the face just wasn't quite natural enough in it's movement to convince me.

Go back and watch the original and compare. You can debate the merits of Sean Young as an actor but when she was made-up like a china doll her facial reactions were just as 'unnatural'. Her coldness as an attempt to hide a nagging insecurity was portrayed in her stoney-facedness and IMO the recreation of her in 2049 captured this perfectly. Whether that was intentional or down to limitations of the technology? Who cares!

Agreed, Rachel worked well for me, in fact most of the effects were pretty spot on and never felt jarring, it's the rest of the film that was a bit disappointing for me but looks like I'm in the minority on here.

She was superb in this film, great piece of acting of a great character. The way they filmed Ana was pretty special though, she is very photogenic and put in a great performance too.

Ryan Gosling was perfect for the role, which I wasn't sure of when he was touted for the role.

Mackenzie Davis had the look of a young Daryl Hannah about her too, which was a nice touch.

I saw the twice last week... IMAX 3D and 2D, after dusting off my BR Directors Cut the previous weekend.

I loved BR 2049. Yes it's a very long movie but long times have never phased me. For me, the time, the pace of it was an integral part of the movie. I wasn't expecting the pace of a Terminator, Aliens or I Root movie. It wouldn't have felt right. I found myself question and wondering as it progressed. As more was revealed I as able to link small things back to points in the original, scenes, bits of dialogue... It think it was very clever how it linked back and answered questions you were left with at the end of the original.
The soundtrack really worked for me, industrial and barren, live earth had become. A hard, harsh environment to live in. So the soundtrack was hard and harsh on the ear.
K and Luv, I saw them as just wanting to be more than they were. Where Roy and Pris wanted to continue to live, K and Luv had evolved, living wasn't enough. They wanted to matter. A comment on the subtle evolution of AI?
IMAX 3D hands down the way to see it. It's just so much more immersive both visual and aurally.

I’m taking the wife tonight, if she gets back in time, as I want to see it again on the big screen before it leaves cinemas. Seems only this weekend left in Basingstoke.

Fingers crossed for a digital release in the not too distant future.

Finally got so to see this last night but it has unfortunately been demoted to smaller screens at the local multiplexes around our way.

Still, a visual feast and one of the finest shot films of recent times - the Vegas sequences were stunning.

For me, it was a masterpiece...yet I couldn't possibly recommend it to the average man on the street as something they have to see. It's a film that I know inside me I loved but I won't be talking about it to my mates or wife. An odd reaction, but there we go.
