Clarkson, Hammond and May were essentially motoring journalists, turned presenters (and mates), who hit upon a formula (with Andy Wilman) that essentially turned them into 'car show presenters'.
Err......not quite.Clarkson had already been a 'car show presenter' on the 'old, old' Top Gear 4-5 years previously, along with Andy Wilman working in production.
It was JC and Wilman together that independently re-invented TG, which they then took to the BBC, and then even later on selling the ownership of it off to the BBC.
Hammond and May were not part of that initial reinvention and Hammond I believe auditioned for the part, and wasn't a motoring journo IIRC, so likely wasn't a 'mate' of JC prior to the show starting.
May had been a motoring journo, and had also previously presented the CH4 motoring programme Driven in the late 90's around the time that the old, old TG was on. Again, whether he and JC were 'mates' at the time he joined the TG team or not I'm not sure, although likely they knew each other.

OK, let's run with this: what is your worst possible combination of three celebrities to present TG? I'm going with:
James Corden
Davina McCall
Jamie Oliver
Salma HayekJames Corden
Davina McCall
Jamie Oliver
Julianne Moore
Scarlett Johansson
That would be terrible ..... definitely wouldn't want to watch that .....

Shamelessly nicking that for a threadJames Corden
Davina McCall
Jamie Oliver
You know those conversations you end up having with people - 'ooh, you should speak to Dave, he likes cars too' - and you quickly realise Dave might say he likes cars but he knows f**k all about them?
I can't help but think that's what this new line-up looks like - poor Monkey Harris trying to talk technically about cars with two idiots who are only interested in what the car looks like or says about them.

I gave Top Gear a go through the previous line up changes and last season was pretty good overall. I was disappointed to see MLB was leaving but thought they'd carry on with Rory.
I actually like Paddy. Flintoff however...Jesus wept. Can't stand the bloke and I'm a cricket fan!
Awful on commentary for the T20 where he was brash and just shouty in general. Final nail in the coffin for me.

I’m pretty sure there’s never been such a large list of potentially great presenters. The TG hosts need to know about cars, be passionate and be able to translate this onto the screen. With all the car mags shedding journalists and the emergence of decent YouTube presenters, the pickings are rich
- Chris Harris (obvs keep but lose the weird race instructive segment)
- Henry Catchpole
- Jethro Bovington
- Matt Farah
- Alex Goy
- etc

My 2p is that I'd have liked to see Henry Catchpole, but that would have been too risky for Auntie I suspect. He deserves a wider audience, some of the Carfection stuff lately has been fantastic.
I'll still watch it because Harris is staying and I used to watch his stuff on youtube because it was very good - a natural presenter. Freddie could go either way, but he seems alright. Never heard of Paddy so that's an unknown quantity for me.
Sad to see Rory go, he did some good pieces. MLB was surprisingly good but I can understand when you've as much money as he has, why you wouldn't want a TG sized commitment in your life. I wouldn't!
