A Night To Remember
My son learnt about the Titanic and became absolutely fascinated by the story, so we sat down to watch this with him.

It's a product of its time with a very keep calm and carry on tone throughout, and it's told in a starkly non-dramatic way which somehow makes it quite powerful and more real. It does make the Cameron one (which I know is popular to hate but I think is good) seem a bit daft in comparison.

Obviously some of the effects are flimsy but they're lightly used so it doesn't detract too much.

It's really quite an amazing film and well worth watching.

19 lifeboats out of 20.

Finally got round to watching Three Billboards.

I thought it was brilliant up until the ending. But I am assuming I have missed the point?

Anyone care to (spoiler?) tell me what I've missed. Or is that the point?

Joaquin Phoenix in ultra gritty and violent thriller.

Similar dynamic to Leon but much darker and indeed better for the leads performance.
Managed 4 seconds last night, my brain said it would be rubbish, I shall try again tonight.

Finally watched Baby Driver, not bad 6.5 out of 10

I though Three Billboards was one this years best films.

Not sure what point there is to miss about the end?

Their reconciliation is complete.

Overlord

Not a massive marketing effort - trailer made it out to be a horror movie. Honestly genuinely impressed, kind of like r rated captain America with saving private Ryan reality. Main lead was also really good Jovan, who's had lots of bit roles (inc Jack Ryan). Had the girl out of oblivion too!

9/10 for horror/action, enjoyable.
Just watched this. Quite a disappointment for me who loved B-tastic Dead Snow and such. A lot of promise for what is a very mediocre/ boring film. 4.5 Nazis/11 Zombies
BTW That girl wasn't in Oblivion, but she's lovely cloud9

They shall not grow old.

Saw the premier of this a few weeks ago at the cinema.

Its on BBC2 tonight at 9:30

Its extraordinary how peter jackson transformed the original footage and brings the people alive.

Well worth watching today in particular.

You were never really here

A superb thriller/action movie. Joaquin Phoenix is a veteran turned hired gun with a lifetime of pain and regret told in flashbacks, paid to rescue a young girl from an underage sex ring, a job that appears to go well at first. Then everything spirals. Real "less is more" filmmaking: atmospheric, understated, and intelligent, a small cast, no explosions and few words. It shows how little you really need to make a great film. 8/10

The 33
An account of the 33 Chilean miners trapped underground in 2010. I didn't do any research after to find out how true to life it was (apart from remembering from the time they all got out) so otherwise it was reasonable. Very dubious Chilean accents from the French (!) and Irish (!!!!) lead actors.

The Meg
As crap as you'd expect a Jason Statham vs CGI shark movie to be, so I wont comment on that, but why does every film now need a sassy lesbian in a tech role? You can tell shes a sassy lesbian because she has short black spiky hair, a wry smile, and lots of tattoos. And refuses to shake hands with men (even when that man is the bloke that pays your wages, and you are meeting him for the first time, and hes been nothing but polite to you). See also; Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Journeys End
Seemed an appropriate film for yesterday... based on a book and play apparently, a young lad joins the army as an officer in WW1 and full of naïve exuberance requests to go straight to the front to serve with a school friend. But on arriving he finds his friend a changed man - drunk, angry and shellshocked - and also arrives days before the germans are expected to start the Spring Offensive. Not really about action - 99% is the tedium of waiting for something to happen, and the keeping up of appearances of morale. Paul Bettany is good as an older officer who takes the youngster under his wing, and there is a great scene where they are literally counting down the minutes before they are expected to go "over the top" and everytime the young lad asks questions about the Germans Bettany's character keeps trying (and failing) to turn the conversation round to mundane topics like what fruit they'll have for dinner etc. Its quite a powerful scene. This was the best of the three films, needless to say!

Flagged for this evening. That program and other similar programs should be compulsory viewing.

We attended a small village remembrance service yesterday which finished off at the war memorial with our vicar playing the last post on her trumpet, unforgettable. We cannot begin to imagine the pain and sacrifice of those people.

As you were.

"They Shall Not Grow Old " well what can I say? a very moving and thought provoking film in every way eek I cant even imagine those living conditions never mind the terror of the conflict itself , god bless those soldiers , only thing I have to add is the current generation of adults inc many snowflakes have a duty to watch what these men and woman endured , the doctors and nurses must of seen horrific mutilation inc shell shocked victims, just the cries of dieing men on the field must of been soul destroying , I for one am very grateful that I never served in neither the 1st or the 2nd world wars but am eternally grateful for those that did .

The Foreigner

Jackie Chan plays a Chinese Takeaway owner who witnesses his daughter being killed in a "new-IRA" terrorist attack and vows vengeance on the bombers.

On the face of it it sounded ste, but it was surprisingly punchy and emotionally delicate - Chan pulled off the character well. Brosnan was reliable although his NI accent was about as good as Sam Neill...

Saw Bohemian Rhapsody last night interesting, quite enjoyed it, but it doesn't seem to drag you in like some biopics can, it all seems rather 'manufactured' and dramatized. Malek is proving to be a pretty decent actor and sees to pull the part off pretty well. However it's a bit emotional towards the end...

What struck a cord apart from the carnage, was just how oblivious the general public were and how they treated ex servicemen post the war.

I think the USA had the same issue with Vietnam. It looks like they have learned from that now and returning soldiers are treated much better by civilians.

Film is great though.

They Shall Not Grow Old was an incredibly moving and at times very graphic film but well worth seeing. It's now on the BBC iplayer if you have missed it. They were showing it in my local cinema on Remembrance Day at 11 am which was extremely apt.
