‘You Were Never Really Here’

Joaquin Phoenix in ultra gritty and violent thriller.

Similar dynamic to Leon but much darker and indeed better for the leads performance.
I was sadly underwhelmed by this, despite very much wanting to like it.

To compare this to Leon would be akin to comparing "The Meg" to "Jaws"
I agree. Downloaded it after recommendations on here, and thought it was steaming pile..
Nowhere near as good as Leon.

Me too. It was merely "okay".

Recently watched ‘sightseers’ I thought I’d give ‘a field in England’ a go. I’m not exactly sure what the hell I’v just watched. However, the Reece Shearsmith/ tent scene was the creepiest thing i’v ever seen .

Is that that low rent serial killer caravan thing?
A curious thing that...it was on film4 a while back as part of low rent uk horror

Thor ragnarok again.

I think this is a perfect film.

Pacing, humour,structure cutting etc etc.

No it’s not the best film ever made I’d argue it’s up there somewhere though.

In the craft of film making, I don’t see how you could make a comic book movie better.
I agree wholly. It IS a comic come to life on the big screen. The vibrant colors, the vibrant characters, the spacey other worldly atmoshpere, the seriousness yet just the right amount of humour and at the righ time.

It is literally one of the best comic adaptation IMO.

We watched Three billboards on sky last night.

Really enjoyed it, Frances McDormand is just so good in this.

Fair do’s. So much dross out there that when something comes along that I can actually watch I am disproportionately pleased.

Hell or High Water

Watched this after seeing Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart the night before where he got an Oscar. He really is good isn't he. Wasn't such a fan of him being Rooster Coburn but hey, credit for his recent movies.

HorHW was a good modern heist movie with a fairly satisfactory outcome - I won't throw a spoiler in but we'll worth a watch.
8/10

PS been watching movies long enough to remember his dad on tv.

Made the mistake of watching The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on Netflix. I usually like the Coen brothers films but this one just didn't work for me, it really dragged despite being 6 'short' films. It did have a few good moments but these didn't make up for the rest of it. 4 out of 10

Re-watched Prisoners with my youngest daughter on Friday as she is very much into psychological thrillers and really enjoyed it. A great story with no plot holes and great acting. 8 out of 10

Jeff Bridge....such a damn fine actor, in my current top 5

Just rewatched The Guard for the umpteenth time, a near-perfect film, and probably a genuine 8/9 out of 10, unlike some inflated marks. A film (like some ones from years ago) that I'll enjoy for decades, like a good book or song.

Margin Call

About a bank that realises the brown stuff is about to hit the fan and what they do over 24hrs just before the economic collapse. I saw good reviews but its not a patch on The Big Short which I still think is one of the most incredible films I've ever watched. Truly mind blowing.

3 Billboards.
I can see why it's not to everyone's taste but I really liked it. Great character driven drama with a few didn't see that coming moments.
Liked the ambiguous ending as well.
9/10

Both the Guard and hell or high water are favourite films of mine that will be treasured for years to come.

Watched "it comes at night"

It's a bit of a different take on the post-apocalyptic genre, most of which I enjoy (not world war Z....) but this still managed to be fresh and make you stop and think about survival and what we as a species would be compelled to do to protect ourselves as a race.

It leaves a lot unanswered but I think it works very well.

Also a recent viewing of the equaliser 2 - wasn't so impressed or immersed as the first one. Shoot out scene towards the end was just a bit meh really.

The Drop

Watched this on Film4 last night, gritty Brooklyn crime / gang thriller with Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini, really enjoyed it.

Great movie and a good litmus test as I cannot see why its not to everyone's taste - everyone entitled to their opinion of course but if someone doesn't like Billboards they are likely not to have the same taste as me smile

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
Far from Coen brothers best but enjoyed some of the stories, and some less - could not take it as seriously as a full length movie

The Predator

I wanted to like this, but it was a bit of a mess really, with way too many issues to list. 5/10

Equaliser 2

Not too bad, weaker than the first but still had some decent parts. 6/10

Finding nothing of interest at the cinema I caught up with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The setting is all superheroes and action, and they are great, but they aren't really the point. They are the backdrop for a human story with characters you get to care about. Which is the point. Excellent. 8/10.
