We watched the new Mission Impossible film last night. I thought I'd love it, as I have liked all previous films, and people have said on here that this is by far the best of the series.

I was bored. So much so I fell asleep twice, as did my wife and step son. Cruise looks too old now, and the stunts were just to OTT. The using other people's faces thing was cringe-worthy too, reminding me of old '70-'s Scooby Doo cartoons.

5/10 - seen it all too many times before, but made worse by the age of the star.

I watched it a few days ago - found it entertaining on the whole, but how much lens flare??? Pretty much every single scene...

If there's one thing PH constantly demonstrates Chris it's how different everyone's tastes are. If PH says "best of series" it normally means 'stay well clear'. See also recent comments about Das Boot - which has been elevated to almost legendary levels on here but is, in reality, a rather long-winded and plodding character study of German submariners. It's not a masterclass in acting or suspense (though there is a fair bit in a seen it all before submarine evading fire underwater sort of way), it's rather dreary and superficial.

I watched it last night too. I'm all for suspending belief in the name of fiction but I think the reason people suggest it is boring is that it has moved past any sense of peril: you know that key characters won't be killed; you know that the good guys will win, so you don't shift (figuratively) to the edge of your seat and enjoy heightened tension.

Having said that, and in spite of it being 2.5 hours long, I didn't zone out - which I do very easily - so it gets 6.5 seconds out of a ten second fuse from me.

I think the age/era of the viewer has a big impact on that. The "being depth-charged/crush depth" thing hadn't been done to death/as well when Das Boot came out.

Likewise I remember picking my jaw off the floor when I first saw the Trinity kick in the Matrix. These days bullet time wouldn't raise an eyebrow even in a supermarket advert.

See also aliens bursting from stomachs, and just about every plot twist you've seen. I thought Psycho was rubbish for the same reason.

I wonder how people watching Downfall fresh view the bunker scene now it's been parodied to death.

It's a very fair point. Sometimes when you watch an older film you can think "oh! what a cliché", not realising that you are watching the origin of that cliché.

I actually did watch Downfall after the parodies. It was good seeing it in context, and although it was a little weird, it fitted so well into the film that the feeling of weirdness passed very quickly.

Oh yes it had. In every post-war B/W and colour submarine movie from British and American cinema! Countless war films feature the 'pinging' and depth charging sequences of Das Boot.

Yes, I'm over 40. smile

Watch any Kung Fu movies in the 70s and you'd have seen countless 'Trinity kicks' - or that style anyway.

Psycho wasn't about effects and plot, but about direction and suspense. Aliens bursting from stomachs is relatively modern SFX and has little relevance to DB. I get your point, but IMO DB was more of a suspenseful slow-burning character study than effect-laden actioner.

It's easy to watch a movie and spot a plot device and mistakenly believe it's never been done before just because the viewer hasn't seen it before, but TBH the tension of the sub hunt wasn't a stand out feature of the movie anyway.

It was probably the first time that a Western audience had seen wire work though, and Bullet Time was pretty innovative too (although had been seen in the Smirnoff adverts the previous year).

The point still stands - go back to an old film where something was fresh back then but which is clichéd now, and of course it will look clichéd now. Regardless of whether it was the progenitor of the cliché, or merely an early adopter of it.

On a related note - Bloodsport. Pure 80's cheese and the epitome of "so bad it's good".

Western audiences have been watching Eastern movies which featured wire work for many years, maybe not mass market blockbusters...

What is 'bullet time'? A special effect involving computer trickery? That's not the issue.

From the perspective of Das Boot, you've missed the point.

It wasn't fresh back then.

Ok, whatever. I know better than you persist in a discussion with you. You won't brook any dissent or an opinion contrary to your own.

So, fine. Have it your way. You are Das Man.

Well it's not really "my way" is it? The film Das Boot wasn't the first by a country mile to show submariners being depth charged etc.. Hence my point "It wasn't fresh back then". confused

Ok, on that very narrow and isolated point, you are probably correct. And if that was the only point you were arguing, then I concede it. My comments were in a wider context though and I thought yours were too.

Widows.

Trailer was 5/10 at best. The film while a slow burner to get going was actually pretty decent, I do think it needed a re-write of the end - it seemed a bit like the script was rshed to finish the film in the allotted time.

Overall 7/10

Last night watched "Mile 22", the recent Walberg action vehicle.
Normally I quite enjoy Marky Mark's films, but absolutely hated this. Firstly, its another "funded-by, and geared-towards" Chinese market job, which means its mostly set in that region, half the cast are Asian, and there has to be a "lead-Asian" who is almost as cool/hardcore/sexy as our western movie star, and once or twice in the film manages to save our hero or at least do something better than he can do, to keep that section of the audience happy. See also, The Meg, Skyscraper, etc etc

Obligatory sassy female/feminist tech operators at mission control (see also the Meg)

John Malkovich plays John Malkovich, as he does in pretty much every film. He also does my pet movie hate which is wherever there is a team of CIA/NSA underlings in a room feverishly working on computers, the person in charge addresses them with "OK PEOPLE, we need to..." (See also the Bourne Identity films)

The biggest problem is Marky Marks character. I like anti-heroes, but his special-ops bloke is just 100% ahole from start to finish, and they made the bizarre decision to give him some character depth by making a big deal of him having a type of OCD where he has to snap an elastic band on his wrist to help him concentrate. Not since old US show "Monk" have writers tried to shoehorn such a retarded trait in to make someone interesting/different. It gets tedious from about 8.75 minutes into the film.

In fact, his whole elite team are equally sized aholes, including the STRANG PAWARFAL WAMAN who is going through a child custody battle (who cares?) and most of the non-action scenes are just her and marky mark shouting at each other and virtually getting their respective balls out to see who has the biggest.

The dialogue throughout is absolutely retarded, and the biggest thing is it doesn't know whether it wants to be a serious action movie (say, Bourne Identity), or an action comedy. Towards the end Mark and the baddie are at opposite ends of a corridor having a lazy shoot-out and cracking jokes to each other: "I'm gonna shoot you" "no, I'm gonna shoot you" "actually I'm out of ammo, can borrow some?" "Yeah, have these *bang bang*"
Its woeful.

Positives? Its over soon - its only 1.5 hours long. There some nicely choreographed (and unrealistic/OTT) fights from the guy that starred in The Raid, and a bit of a plot twist at the end.

The end is left open for a sequel, but no way am I watching that. 3/10.
I saw this as well.

Yeah its retarded. And spazzy. And homo.

It’s set in an Asian city and they used some Asian actors - some of them even spoke in their Asian accents - ugh! Bloody Asians funding a film and then expecting Asian actors in it instead of proper white American actors.

And they had girls in it! In a film with guns about shooting. Everyone knows girls can’t shoot guns or fight! So retarded! And Spazzy And Homo!

And they made the girl strong enough to fight a man - ridiculous! That must be a feminist SJW statement which makes me uncomfortable and TYPE IN CAPS I DONT KNOW WHY?.

Then the Asian guy from the Raid I can’t be bothered to look up his name could fight really well and that’s obviously just in the film to sell in to the Chinese even though he’s not a Chinese and make Americans look bad or something.

0.5/10 for being retarded and spastic. (10/10 for me for not be homo as I like girls, but not girls with guns because that’s wrong and makes ME WANT TO TYPE IN CAPS FOR SOME REASON).

(It really is a terrible film, don’t bother with it)

Nativity Rocks!

It was OK. The kids enjoyed it, so if you are 7/8/9 you will find it funny. If you are much older probably not (actually there were a couple of over the kids heads jokes which I laughed at, but not enough). The plot was the usual obvious tripe scholl rivals, big show, arrogant star stuff but with added Syrian Refugees. Some of the worst acting and singing I've seen since my kids last Nativity, and that was the adults. The kids were generally fine.
And then the musical at the end went on way too long and had not a single memorable or catchy song in it.

5/10 - only go if you have to.
