Films I watched this week (Vol 2)

Young Offenders
Found this on Netflix and watched it last night. It's about two Irish lads wrong 'uns who plan to take advantage of a massive cocaine shipment being washed ashore (which really happened)
I enjoyed it. From the trailer it looks like a simple, daft comedy and I laughed a few times, but it has a bit more heart and depth than I expected, and the two lads are excellent.
8 stolen bikes out of 10.
As with The Phantom Menace, the Red Letter Media review of Ghostbusters almost makes it worth the film being made.

Ghostbusters Feminist edition now on C4 - so bad it's...er, just awful.
I have never recovered from watching that, watching the real one earlier cheered me up though.http://redlettermedia.com/mr-plinketts-ghostbuster...
Almost.
BlacKKKlansman
Ron Stallworth, an African American police officer from Colorado Springs, CO, successfully manages to infiltrate the local Ku Klux Klan branch with the help of a Jewish surrogate who eventually becomes its leader. Based on actual events.
Highly recommend this, started a little slow but worth sticking with.

I found it by accident earlier in the year and loved it too - You've not watched the series then by the sounds of it? - Just as daft, simple and stupid... many more stolen bikes too, along with probably the best sing-a-long on a hijacked bus i've ever seen.Found this on Netflix and watched it last night. I've just been watching some oldies on netflix:
May have already mentioned Life of Brian but it's really worth a remention . Utterly quotable, very funny & totally mad. 139 crucifixionso out of 140.
Malone - Burton Reynolds so-so hitman with a heart actioner from the 80s. IIRC it was an 18 back in the day, these days it seems like it'd struggle to even rated 15, might even get a 12a. Score: 12/18
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - old school film making. It is interesting compared to modern films just how little music there is ruining quiet bits, how (relatively) little violence even a violent film has. As an amusing aside to people earlier in the thread commenting on long modern film are TGTB&TU comes in at a whisker under 3 hours. Will have to try and dig out the rest as the "Dollar trilogy" as well as Once upon a Time in the West

A few memorable quotes, but that's it.
I then rewatched Meaning of Life, and that was considerably better.

Ok. I might have to go over to the Unpopular Opinions thread but based on this, I watched Life of Brian the other day, for the first time since I was about 18. I had forgotten that it is, in my opinion, utterly terrible.

What! Unbelievable............Careful, they will be sending round The Peoples Front of Judea A few memorable quotes, but that's it.

The Magic Box was on SUnday morning very early, about one of the inventors of early cinema. Bloke should be on the tenner. sad.
The Taking of Pelham One Two Three is on tcm tonight
The Crazies (one of the better alternatives to 28 Days Later) is on horror channel now

Just watched the new Johnny English thingy.
Appalling, cliched, but in a sort of good/bad way and very cyber aware.
For us PH analog luddites who want to go off grid and don't like being tracked by our phones.
It was mildly amusing, but the topical we are all going to hell in a facebook data mining handcart references where quite stark and on message.

Aquaman - I actually went into this with no expectation and for 3/4's of the film was pleasantly surprised. No, it's not high art but, and this is important, it was fun - you could laugh with it rather than exclusively AT it. Some of the SFX were stunning (but quite a bit was shonky too) however, the typical bane of most superhero films struck again..... an over CGI'd mess of a climactic battle looking for all the world like whoever designed/shot/wrote it could have done with a mega dose of ritalin.
The Crazies has some good bits but I think I prefer the original version to the remake - 70's horror is that bit nastier. And Impulse (a similar concept, 1984) isn't bad either.
Saw Venon recently - not anywhere near as bad as I expected. Actually quite liked it though it's a bit lightweight.
Can't say I think much of Ant Man 2 though - I've watched it twice now and honestly can't remember a thing about it. I only watched it the second time because I couldn't remember anything from the first time I saw it.
Equaliser 2 - meh. First one was much better.
The Meg - meh. Nothing original and not much to it.
First Man - not exactly light entertainment but a very nicely made and interesting bit of cinema.
Happytime Murders - crap. I can see what they were aiming for but they missed.
I Still See You - interesting Sci-FI/Horror concept. Worth the watch.

I've just watched Mandy and I don't think I can process the last two hours. I've watched A LOT of films this year but it's safe to say I won't forget this one. A shame it never got a proper theatrical release as I would loved to have seen/heard it on the big screen, remarkable score and cinematography.
Nicholas Cage does Nicholas Cage like only Nicholas Cage could, but it really pays off here, one particular scene involving vodka and pants could only ever have been performed by him, it's bonkers but it works.
This will be on the midnight circuit for decades and I for one will hunt out a theatrical screening one day. I'm off to see if you can buy the film score because I've not heard better, I understand it's ineligible for the Academy Awards but otherwise would surely have been a slam dunk.

Where did you see Mandy?
Rented it on Amazon, well worth £3.50. Woke up this morning and it's all I can think about. I think it helped that I had no idea what it was about (I picked it because earlier in the day I saw that the score had won an award), not even a plot summary, but wow, straight towards the very top of my film of the year.

We don't have the faintest idea either, you've told us absolutely nothing about the film, not even a plot summary, other than it's got Nicolas Cage in it and there's a scene involving vodka.
- It's rated 18 (and earns it, and then some)- The score is incredible
- The cinematography is incredible
- Nicholas Cage at his absolute peak
- It's unlike anything you'll see this year, or next
- It's fantastic
- The vodka scene is burned into my retinas
What more do you need?!
