Films I watched this week (Vol 2)
Discussion
Bumblebee. Probably the best Transformer movie to date. Robots, explosions, more robots and explosions; what's not to like? It has funny moments; but nothing like the Michael Bay films which just go over the top with silly comedy. The personality they have managed cram into a CGI character was amazing. It also returns a the transformers to what we grew up with in the 80s. Took my 4 year old; whom loved it (its a PG) - definite worth taking the kids (big or little) when it goes on release from the 24th.
A definite 7.2 Auto-bots over 10 Decepticons (losses a point for not having Spectre gunships).

Young Offenders
Found this on Netflix and watched it last night. It's about two Irish lads wrong 'uns who plan to take advantage of a massive cocaine shipment being washed ashore (which really happened)
I enjoyed it. From the trailer it looks like a simple, daft comedy and I laughed a few times, but it has a bit more heart and depth than I expected, and the two lads are excellent.
8 stolen bikes out of 10.
As with The Phantom Menace, the Red Letter Media review of Ghostbusters almost makes it worth the film being made.

Almost.
I went to youtube to find the trailer for young offenders, they have a series out, I found myself laughing through most of it. Ghostbusters Feminist edition now on C4 - so bad it's...er, just awful.
I have never recovered from watching that, watching the real one earlier cheered me up though.http://redlettermedia.com/mr-plinketts-ghostbuster...
Almost.
Aquaman. Looks fantastic and a decent movie to boot. Nothing amazing but better than the likes of Black Panther. The underwater scenes look brilliant. 7/10.
Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse. Quite possibly the best Spiderman movie so far. Loved it. The 'camera' work was amazing and they certainly pushed the boat out on the computer animation. Loved it from start to finish. 9/10!

I've just watched Mandy and I don't think I can process the last two hours. I've watched A LOT of films this year but it's safe to say I won't forget this one. A shame it never got a proper theatrical release as I would loved to have seen/heard it on the big screen, remarkable score and cinematography.
Nicholas Cage does Nicholas Cage like only Nicholas Cage could, but it really pays off here, one particular scene involving vodka and pants could only ever have been performed by him, it's bonkers but it works.
This will be on the midnight circuit for decades and I for one will hunt out a theatrical screening one day. I'm off to see if you can buy the film score because I've not heard better, I understand it's ineligible for the Academy Awards but otherwise would surely have been a slam dunk.
Although a bit dark it will be 2 hours I will never get back, it was not special and another NC crap movie which he has done a load lately.Nicholas Cage does Nicholas Cage like only Nicholas Cage could, but it really pays off here, one particular scene involving vodka and pants could only ever have been performed by him, it's bonkers but it works.

Thought I better check it wasn't just me, but a quick browse suggests the reviews are pretty much great across the board, so I don't feel too guilty recommending it. Definitely not a film everyone is going to love though. Two films so far this week.
First is a heist movie, set in LA, where a cool calm robber who has done long stretches in chokey is plotting his last heist which will set him up for life if he succeeds... and if he doesn't, hes not gong back to jail. Pitted against him (and seemingly the only person that appreciates this isn't your run-of-the-mill crim) is a larger-than-life bomabastic sthead of a cop with marriage problems who needs to steal every scene. During the film they meet face to face in a sort of psychological willy-waving confrontation. There are several shoot-outs devoid of music, with deafening gunfire lighting up your speakers.
No, im not describing "Heat", but the more recent "Den of Thieves", starring "THUS US SPARTAH!" as the cop.
I started off not liking it, but it grew on me and by the end of the 2.5 hour running time I was surprised I was quite enjoying it. Theres even a twist at the end that could be setting itself up for a sequel.
6 Michael Manns out of 10 Michael Bays
Quite different to that, also watched a French B&W subtitled film from 1960, "Eyes without a Face", about a plastic surgeon abducting girls to find a suitable face for his daughter who he horribly disfigured by crashing a car. The daughter wears a full-face porcelain mask through most of the film which is quite creepy looking, and there is a surgery scene which I can imagine would have seemed quite shocking back in the day.

It's not a terrible film is it? But it nicks the obvious bits of Heat and misses the subtleties by miles. For the first time in what must be twenty years I watched Coming To America last night having great memories of seeing it in the cinema, then a few times on rental.
Not nearly as funny as I remembered, lots of fourth wall breaking, and HD really shows the low budget nature of the makeup effects and (few) matt paintings. Plus it just seems to end with the feeling there were scenes missing.
I'm going to have to wash my brain now and go and watch Trading Places or Beverly Hills Cop.
A generous 5/10

For me, they both still stand up, TP especially. CtA is a different beats, that was when Eddie MUrphy hit the bigtime, it was purely a vehicle for him based on a story by him BHC and TP had amazing ensemble casts.A generous 5/10
I see CtA was also a JOhn Landis film...I wonder if the power had shifted by thgen.

According to Wikipedia Murphy and Landis had a serious falling out due to Murphy getting too big for his boots. I see CtA was also a JOhn Landis film...I wonder if the power had shifted by thgen.
Bumblebee
Comfortably the best live action Transformers movie, it's coherent, fun, easy to follow and doesn't descend into CGI mush.
It's not going to wow anyone with anything radical or new, but Hailee Steinfield is excellent as you'd expect and it plays on the 80s setting really nicely.

We don't have the faintest idea either, you've told us absolutely nothing about the film, not even a plot summary, other than it's got Nicolas Cage in it and there's a scene involving vodka.
- It's rated 18 (and earns it, and then some)- The score is incredible
- The cinematography is incredible
- Nicholas Cage at his absolute peak
- It's unlike anything you'll see this year, or next
- It's fantastic
- The vodka scene is burned into my retinas
What more do you need?!
