It is good to spot people in old films 'before they were famous', Bryan Cranston in SPR would have been before Malcolm In The Middle, he wouldn't be that well known before that.

Mary Poppins Returns.

The most entertaining part of the whole experience was laughing at the guy behind us had constant flatulence. I fell asleep. The wife LOVED the movie.

Wouldn't recommend.
My appreciation of the movie increased ten fold when I saw the video of Emily Blunt filming the bathtub scene, like everyone I assumed it was CGI, but it was actually a practical effect with a hole in the bathtub and a (steep) slide down under the stage.

That's the trouble with CGI. We no longer have a sense of wonder, as literally anything is possible with CGI. frown

A T.Hanks double bill this weekend - Apollo 13 (no matter how many times I see it, I always feel surprised that they make it home) and then Saving Private Ryan - the start and end of which are harder to watch than the combat injuries throughout the rest of the film.
Both films are solid gold.

I actually meant the very opening scene - with the (old Ryan) wandering through the cemetery, and particularly the ending when he says a few lines. Reminds me of Schindlers speech about the ring.
You're right about the beach landing though, its brutal.
My Grandpa had 7 brothers and 2 sisters in the services during the war, by coincidence just before i watched the film i listened to his memories (he put these to tape in the mid 80's) of his experiences during the various campaigns including the times he tried to meet his brothers as their paths crossed. It made the film feel far more real than when i've previously watched it. An amazing piece of cinema.

One of his duties at the end of the war was to help rehabilitate the concentration camp survivors they found as they swept through Europe, it was a huge battle to keep them alive as they were in such a bad state, unable to take on food because their stomachs were so damaged from malnutrition. I cant watch Schindlers list without not only being horrified by what a truly evil regime can do to people, but also thinking about what effect finding those poor people had on the soldiers who liberated them. It's very powerful stuff when you have a relative explain what they came across and then see how Spielberg illustrated the brutality of it so vividly.

Spielberg has done some amazing work.

I think I enjoyed watching the Behind the Scenes video more than the actual movie which is a shame!

Ghost Stories.

Pretty good although there was something a bit lacking in the story line for me. Can’t put my finger on it.

The Taking of Pelham One Two THree;
not seen this one for year, very good. Matthau was a great talent. Also noticed that Teehee was a police bloke in it, for a moment I thought he only had one hand. biggrin
The original (with Matthau) was terrific. The remake was utter ste.

We watched Red Sparrow last night on SKY

Apart from the fabulous Jennifer Lawrence's body to look at & we do get to see a lot of flesh & peachy bum scenes it's pretty ..meh
She's bloody foxy in Passengers
She was the only redeeming feature of both movies

Must just be me then. I actually really enjoyed Red Sparrow as a movie. It had a good atmosphere and it kept me watching. The only thing I didn't really gel with was the though of Lawrence as this uber sexy vixen. Nice figure but she's bang average at best. (I appreciate I'm in the minority reading some of this thread though biggrin )

'Haywire.' Oh dear formulaic and boring.. 3/10

'A Quiet Place' good idea and well done.
No lines to learn so relies totally on acting with expressions etc skills.
8/10 for originality and execution.
The bath scene for women to watch must be tough..

And the nail on the stair is tough for everyone! My film of last year; glad to hear they're writing a follow up.

Hard to explain why but I hated Red Sparrow. Pretty much the only film I watched in the cinema last year that I regret seeing. I just found it to be a really, really nasty film with no redeeming qualities.

I also can't believe they got away with a 15 rating given the sexual violence and that nasty skin graft scene (I appreciate you don't actually see much, but still). I understand they pre-cut one very brief scene to secure the 15 rating, but judging by the 15/16 year old girls in the cinema at the same time me, it wasn't nearly enough.

I've rarely wanted a film to end so quickly. So yeah, wasn't a fan!

Stan and Ollie

What an enjoyable film, really excellent!

Superbly acted by the lead roles, especially Steve Coogan. You could be forgiven by thinking they were the originals. The whole film flowed nicely along and raised many a laugh and the odd tear from the audience.

Makes a change from all the whizz, bang, cgi stuff that is so popular, (or what the film makers think is!).

Vice

Had high hopes for this - same director and stars (Bale, Carrell) as The Big Short which is one of my favourite movies of recent times.

It has the same feel, flashbacks, humorous interludes but not quite the immediacy of TBS and the subject is a bit dryer. It also more stylised and tries to be a bit clever some times. Like TBS with a bit of Michael Moore thrown in.

That said it is grimly funny, well acted, Bale is transformed, and it is shocking if true - and of course way better than 90% of the processed Hollywood st that is foisted upon us

7/10

Saw Stan and Ollie yesterday. I have to echo what has previously been said about it. A very enjoyable 100 minutes with great performances from the two leading actors and good support from the two actresses playing their wives. a good 8/10 for it.

I'm so pleased to read this, I want to see it but was worried they were going to make a mess of it. Now I'll happily give it a go.

1922. Good film all in all. It’s a fraction slow to start with and the main characters accent can be tough at times.

Dawn of the Dead 1978

The original, and despite Zack Snyder's decent debut of a remake, the best.

Think it's the fourth or fifth time I've seen it. I always spot a new goof each viewing. hehe This time round it was a zomb blatantly diving out of the way of the car in non-cannibal corpse human kinetic mode.

And potentially another although I'm not 100% - I was mildly not sober when watching - IIRC when the gang are re-fuelling the chopper, I swear I heard presumably a crew member say 'George'. It came across as a quiet shout.

As for the film itself, in spite of the goofs the overall production value versus the budget, coupled with the fact it was a film on a much bigger scale than NoTLD and apparently something like 20% of the crew were students it still feels like the first 'proper' apocalyptic zombie film.

Then you've got the consumer satire, kid zombies (the only running Zs in the Romero-verse), Guatemalan one-legged priests and Tom Savini on a motorbike.
