Iron Sky - A science fiction/war movie that takes all the conspiracy theories about the Nazis, alien bases on the dark side of the moon, mining for Helium 3, UFO's and puts them all into a superb comedy. It's incredible the lengths the Moon Nazis will go just to obtain a smartphone and an iPad.

The film even has a spoof of one of the Hitler rant parodies you would normally find on the Internet. Clever send-ups of Star Trek and independence Day as the commander of the USS George W. Bush fights off an invasion but has her plans thwarted by the Australian Space Force.

Francis Ha

Started watching this with Mrs phazed last night. We gave it 10 minutes and both of us thought this isn't for us. We may be wrong but you get an inkling from the beginning of a film. Frankly, I found it a little annoying.

Tell me that I'm wrong and I might give it another go.

Ah, the black screen, press the button and illuminate the LEDs. Pretty much didn't do anything else but looked futuristic at the time.

My good friend at school was always wearing these as his dad owned a watch repair shop and the latest watches afterwards. If I remember correctly I was still wearing an original Russian Sekonda watch, (Which I bought in East Berlin when visiting my grandparents at about 13 years old), my favourite in particular with a clockwork alarm fitted but you had to wind it up! It was cheap, cheerful and I wish I still had that now!

I won mine by guessing what time a clock stopped in a jewelers competition, to the second. We were far too poor to buy one, they cost a fortune. Bought that, 2 necklaces for my sisters and a carriage clock for my parents with the winnings. biggrin It was £50 back then, £400 in todays money. eek

We had better stop there before they press the anti-nostalgia button!

Ghost in the Shell, waste of time. Another soulless, chop-socky borefest.
I'm really surprised by that, as you and I are so frequently in agreement. I thought it had a lot of flaws, not least that it dumbed down a lot of the source material into generic Hollywood cliche, but still managed to capture a lot of the feel and world-building of it. I also felt that they had genuine reverence and respect for the source material, despite the aforementioned dumbing down.
I watched the Johnason version first, then latterly the anime one. As CC says. They clearly went in with some respect for the original and visually it's a good film if not perfect. (The original is perfect either but has that cult thing)

Last night we went and watched Rocketman

Wasn't my choice, I'm not really an Elton fan. And would eschew musicals generally. So expected to be a bit bored or disinterested. But it's very good nonetheless. It's well filmed, it makes sense to a non-fan like myself. They use a lot of the tracks that I have heard before. Eggerton is brilliant, and seemingly did the singing himself. Jamie Bell is also good, as is Richard Madden who plays Johns manager and former lover (and is deeply unpleasant ) The kid they have playing Elton as a young boy is the SPIT of him at that age! (There's comparison pictures in the credits between the film scenes and the real events)

Yes, there's a guy on guy sex scene in there, but it's relevant and not sensationalist. Films only a 15 so don't expect any willies on screen laugh (Russian screenings apparently have this scene cut out)

7.9/10

I watched "Seven" recently.
Must be a good 15 or so years since I last did that, but it still hits the spot for me.
Somehow the recent controversy around Kevin Spacey makes his performance seem even more creepy and sinister.
