Spiderman Far From Home.
Teen romance. Few laughs. Marvel is running out of ideas, but it's ego is so vast it thinks it can entertain people with a silly love story. What people really want is the web-slinger rounding up baddies and being cool.

Yesterday.

Typical Richard Curtis stuff. Lighthearted, no social commentary, good fun.
A nice way to spend an evening.

9/10 holes in Blackburn, Lancashire.

Cold Pursuit

Liam Neilson doing what he does best.
A virtually identical remake of the scandi 'In Order of Disappearance'
His son is unfortunately killed being mistaken for a drug minion, and LN sets about revenge working his way up the ladder.
In both films, his snow plough is the best vehicle on the block'
Don't look too closely but dense Denver snow seems to disappear and reappear to suit the story but who needs to be 'picky'.
A generous body count of course.

8/10, Half a point deducted for lack of originality having seen both films but still 'bloody' good.

Withnail and I

A remastered version at my local art house last weekend which is still as funny as I remembered it. Camberwell carrot and all that,.
I began with a smile on my face right from the start and it just got wider.
I don't need to say any more if you follow this thread on PH. 10/10 anytime.

The night before they screened Deliverance which I sadly missed.

Downton Abbey

If you like Downton, then it's pretty good. I like the sets, time period and the old cars. Story is typical Downton, a bit silly, but entertaining enough.

We were probably the youngest by 30 years in the cinema. Evidently elderly ladies in the cinema are as bad as kids...

Agree with Withnail and I, but Cold Pursuit??? I thought it was absolutely dreadful. The original was okay, but the remake was very poor. 3/10 and thats being generous.

Downsizing (2017)

Interesting premise - scientist discovers how to shrink people to the size of a peanut thus saving resources, existing monies go further blah, blah, blah.

Started OK & Matt Damon's watchable - long way from Bourne, but quickly fell into inconclusive tedium (coincidentally as did the last Damon Bourne film). Needed to be much shorter.

Honey I Shrunk The Kids remains the definitive work on shrinking people.

Watched a few 90's films over the last few days.

Anaconda – A story about a big snake eating people, a strong cast but terrible special effects and acting but it has a big snake. 5/10

Arachnophobia – Hunners and hunners of lethal man killing spiders go on a rampage. It’s got Jeff Daniels and spiders. Solid 8/10

Men in Black – Been years since I watched this, it’s actually a bloody good film. 8/10

Hustlers

Err. Ok it was always going to be a bad film.
1st half is soft porn.
2nd half is what happens if you are greedy and breaking the law.

If you want to see J-lo's ass, go and see it.

Bad times at El Royale with Jeff Bridges. I thought it was very dark and really well done. I woke at 2 am last Wednesday morning and watched it. There was a Peter Greenaway feel to it plus the obvious Tarantino influences. Check it out.
Great film, although this whole 'Tarantino influence' bugs me. It's typical and inimitable Drew Goddard style.

Sucker Punch

Very interesting film. Stylistically its a mix of Sin City, gothic horror, Batman and Anime.

Girl gets framed for murder and put into a insane asylum. Uses fantasies to escape her incarceration.
It's heavily styled on video game tropes and has lots of girls kicking ass in short skirts

Bit light on character development, but i thoroughly enjoyed it.

Well recently it's been all work and no play, so to avoid becoming a dull boy, I took a break and watched "The Shining".

It's one of those classics that for some reason I'd never got round to watching before, despite being old enough to remember when it was first released.

Although looking a bit dated, there's no doubting Nicholson's talent as he gradually becomes more unhinged.

Thoroughly enjoyed it.

I've likewise never got round to watching it, which of course made that bit in Ready Player One that references it rather confusing for me, although it did mean I identified with the character who also had never seen it and was therefore not forewarned about what was about to happen to them. smile

I really liked In Order of Disappearance, not seen the remake. Its a bit funny how the last guy dies.

Watched "12 Angry Men" earlier. I've lost count how many times I've seen it and still find it enjoyable and thought provoking.

12 Jurors out of 12 from me.

Whenever I see that, I'm always reminded of I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, and one of Humphrey Lyttleton's risque introductions to 'Sound Charades':

"The experts expert on Give Us A Clue, was Lionel Blair. Who can ever forget opposing team captain Una Stubbs sitting open mouthed as he tried to pull off Twelve Angry Men in under two minutes"

hehe

Rowntree Cabana's miserable score is a bit mean as I've since discovered both films were directed by the same guy so hardly surprising it is virtually a clone.
Order of Disappearance got the extra 1/2 point for the original idea.

... and the last guy dies in the same way.
