Yeah the original is excellent, and I rewatched it this year. The Matthau version is titled The Taking of Pelham One Two Three so you can recognise it straight away from The Taking of Pelham 123. A quick check shows that there's a tv film from 1998 too.

edit
telly version has Edward James Olmos, Vincent D'Onofrio and Richard Schiff
requires a look!

Eaten by Lions

Very funny Brit comedy, I laughed and laughed. Although some mates that watched it weren't as keen. The clairvoyant is hilarious.

8/10

Taking of Pelham 123 last night.

Original one.

One of the best crime thrillers ever made. Just fantastic pacing, script acting.

So un PC. Lots of little quips.

Great.

It’s 10/10 from me.
Hows it stack up against the newer one

RED HEAT 1988

Arnie + Belushi - whats not to like --- got you can tell its an 80's movie though.....

Commander Lou Donnelly CPD: How do you deal with stress in Russia?
Ivan Danko: Vodka.
Red Heat's great & all the better for the '80's ness. Almost every character, streetscene, building & car looks completely knackered.

Newer one isn’t fit to be called a film in the same company

Harsh.. maybe I think the remakes of a lot of these movies completely miss why they were great in the first place.
Quentin T borrowed heavily from it for RD, he got the tone right if the crooks.

To be honest DW although I like him as an actor didn’t have the presence that WM had, couldn’t play that down trodden fed up of it all character. The pacing is upped there is no sense of tension in the remake ( full disclosure I did turn it off after about 30 minutes. Might have got better)

Great scene when Matthau insults the Japanese visitors without realising they speak English.

Hotel Artemis, was OK and a great performance by Jodie Foster and a great cameo by Goldblum, but the rest of it, though interesting was fairly tame, I felt also too short as a film.

The extended version of Aliens.

Still as good as it was.

Game over, man. Game over.

Agreed - whenever i come across this on the TV i always hope its the extended cut - usually not - but the extra bits are nice....

so many classic lines

such a shame everything after it was utter nonsense - even Ridleys efforts!

Let’s face it WM greatest asset was his face. He’s like a real life deputy dog

al through the film he's being un pc and sexist, it’s a tiny little comment but at the end when the under cover cop with long hair is shot he says to him something like “it’s ok miss “ cracks me up every time. Love the interviewing the disgruntled ex employees too, somehow seems very realistic it’s still 50c smile

Look into my eye.

Wrong, three was great. After repeat viewings I even like the Winona rider one now.

The rest are terrible

Is his line to TeeHee (who is the district commander or deputy chief or something). 'Uh-oh, on the phone you sounded...taller.'

There's a line how after watching the Sunshine Boys one critic didn't realise how old WM was, WM shot back it was make-up.
Charlie Varrick is another WM underscreened great

It's certainly a classic. I watched The Driver with Ryan O'Neal and Bruce Dern last week. It came up when I was channel hopping so I recorded it for when I was more awake. Another great movie (although even less believable than I recall) but it's the first time I've watched it in over 20 years. It still holds up as one of the better driving themed crime caper movies.

One of my favorite quotes from Dern's character "And that's a real sad song. Only trouble is, eh, sad songs ain't sellin' this year." I've used that a couple of times when someone has a whine at me and I'm not in the mood. Mrs Toon nearly slapped me during one such moaning session biggrin
