Just got back from seeing Knives Out. Very enjoyable whodunnit with a good cast.

Star Wars fans don't let the fact that Rian Johnson quite and directed it put you off.

Once upon a time in Hollywood.

Seems like a circle jerk for Tarantino, didn't enjoy it, boring, tedious and doesn't really go anywhere

3/10
I felt the same, i usually enjoy his films but i found this one dull.
It's the sum of its parts, more than small chapters being entertaining in the old Tarantino fashion. If someone says the film doesn't really go anywhere I'd be interested to know whether they understood what what the film was about. Doesn't mean they'd enjoy it any more of course, but the whole point is where the film goes.

The thing is it all becomes pretenious like art, if you like it you like it, you can't make people like something they might not get, maybe it is too highbrow, it just felt like a film to show off his film techniques interspaced with some entertaining bits, which were few and far between, mundane even.

A film is generally about entertainment and enjoyment, if you then have to explain everything it sort of misses the whole point.

it felt like everyone around QT basically said yes to every idea he had, and you end up with loads of self servant dribble.

I find his film techniques (the split screen stuff etc) quite tedious if I'm honest and would much rather he concentrated on story. Was there anything pretentious about the movie? I'm not sure... .

I quite agree, but not every movie can be a Rambo. Some people like to think a bit during a movie, even if it's a simple whodunnit.

You mean an enjoyable ramble through end-of-an-era sixties Hollywood? A WWII veteran who may/not be a murderer as the best friend a down-at-heels B movie star could possibly have? A story that pours scorn on the whole cult-thing and takes a (tiny) swipe at the monster size Bruce Lee is God religion? biggrin I'm not sure idiosyncratic = self-serving as that's a pretty extreme understanding of the Director/Writer role...but even then we all know the trademark of Sergio Leone, or likewise the lack of plot and excess of F/X in a Bay movie. They all have their Director's stamp, and I think OUATIH has far less of Tarantino's than previous offerings.

IMDB give it 7.9/10 (more than I did), but I did say you had to be old enough to 'get it'.

You'll (completely understandably) not get it unless you watched Hollywood in the 1960s. Annoying I know, but there are SO many in- jokes. If you weren't laughing, you may well have missed the 1960's references that us old hippy folk got wink
Exactly this. It was a trip through the cultural and social history of Hollywood at a specific time, alongside which Tarantino had built the story of an 'also ran' whose life was incidentally intertwined with, but ultimately irrelevant to, the higher profile news of the time.

The film certainly had a slow start, but the last hour was outstanding. Definitely - as with most Tarantino creations - one to watch again more fully to appreciate, but a very, very good film. The assemblage of period artefacts alone was Oscar-worthy!

A few this week, a bit older in recent terms but definitely some future classics:

Hell or High Water - love it, Jeff Bridges, gas station scene with the lime green Camero was splendid.

Inside Llewyn Davis - Oscar Isaacs & Coen Bros classic

Blue Ruin - really good and totally unexpected, probably my favourite of the week

Nebraska - Bruce Dern, (aka ‘Burbs guy) definitely a masterpiece (imo)..

Couldn’t find blue ruin so watched hell or high water.

What’s going on, not like their other films that was pretty much a happy ending.

Shame about the full auto AR and the sherif taking the shot like that. Otherwise interesting film. Much preferred wind River.
Wind River good shout, I enjoyed it, not seen before. The shoot outs were great in 5.1.

Hell or High Water isn’t by the Coens (as far as I’m aware).

Wind River, Sicario and Hell or High Water are part of a 'Frontier Trilogy' by Taylor Sheridan https://collider.com/wind-river-taylor-sheridan-in...

Hell or high water is written by the same guy as wind river I believe he also wrote sicario

Different directors on each of the writers movies I think

I love wind river but my god it’s bleak

Brave (on netflix). Just don't. I don't even know where to begin to explain how bad this film is - especially for a half decent cast. It is terrible, continuity errors, terrible story. Countryside was nice though.

Do yourself a favour and miss this one, I don't even think it's a film some will get, it's just too bad!

'The Man Who Haunted Himself', with Roger Moore. A 1970 film that initially slipped under the radar. Has become a bit of a cult movie. highly recommended.

On TV this week! Wednesday, 2205, Talking Pictures Television. Don't miss!yikes

I almost bought this from Amazon Video, but then realised that the last few Tarantino movies are OK for a single watch and that's it. Lots of very slow talky scenes with a very small spattering of high violence at the end. This gets boring after watching the same thing in different movies
