Two films today, separated by 2for1 pizzas and a real ale at the local art house.

knives out
A star studded cast and I was looking forward to it but ended up very confused with the various plot possibilities, I couldn't wait for it to end.
Daniel Craig does a superb southern states drawl.
Agatha Christie who dunnit it certainly isn't.
5 hypodermics / 10 daggers.

the Nightingale
What a powerful drama, set in 1800's Australia, a convict girl on a pending freedom licence is gratuitously raped ( quite graphically ) by English soldiers, her husband and baby murdered and she sets out with a friendly Aborigine tracker for revenge.
Very violent in parts, and be prepared for brutality but an outstanding film well worth seeing.
An amazing take on contemporary racism of the time.
Was streets ahead of the Danial Craig movie above with a talented but largely unknown, to me, cast.
8 muskets / 10 grubby settlers.

£5.99 on Amazon, so why not... Duel. One of my all time favourite films and still brilliant today.

Its still so gripping, the acting from Dennis Weaver is timelessly good. You can't put a score on something this good.

Duel is awesome - hardly ever on TV!

Overlord - i thought actually it was pretty good, 99% of the film was pretty intense just for the feeling of being in WW2 - the fight at the end, was a little generic.

Dr No

Someone bought me the box set of 20 James Bond films about five years ago.

I watched this one the other night. You quite forget how badly acted, how poor the fight scenes are, how really poor the driving scenes were and generally how ham the whole thing is.

That aside, I quite enjoyed it for what it was!

For a film that you describe as 'ham' etc,. It certainly started something big. And over 50 years later...bowtie

hehe that review made me laugh - get the Rog Moore ones on for ham (for the avoidance of doubt I love the Moore-era Bond).

I watched the Fast and Furious: Hobbs & Shaw movie yesterday as it was on an offer to rent at £2.99 via Apple TV.

It isn't a particularly clever film. It is cheesy as hell and entirely predictable but, the action is relentless, the CGI is slick and the set pieces impressive!

Switch off your brain, crack open a beer and enjoy it for the fun action film that it is.

Solid 8/10

Finally got to watch El Camino Sunday night.
Thoroughly enjoyed it, it was so nice to get back into Breaking Bad's Vince Gilligan's style of directing.
The 'policeman' looking into the hole in the apartment and seeing a revolver appear out of the dark and grow as it became nearer to him was magnificient cinematography. 7.5/10. The ending was a bit 'meh' for me.

Forece Ten From Navarone
enjoyable hokum

Miss Peculiars school for weirdos...or something. Wow, Tim Burton has dropped from great heights, boring and tedious, lasted as long as I could and deleted it.

I love Duel. If I remember correctly they accidentally released it on DVD once upon a time but quickly pulled it (I can't remember why) so only those with pre-orders with certain companies received it. It was worth quite a bit but I wouldn't part with mine.

Stan & Ollie on Amazon Prime.

I'm on a free trial and that was still to much to pay.

Coogan just abysmal.

I’m no Steve Coogan fan (quite the opposite) but I thought he was outstanding in this.

Each to their own, but I thought it was superb and both lead actors were well cast and gave convincing performances.

Commando

my god - i used to think this film was awesome "back in the day" watched it last night after years of not seeing it - its utter tosh....but i still love it ;-)
Bennett makes that movie- he spends the whole movie slating everyone and bigging himself up and hams it up amazingly at the end. I love the idea that he was ever considered a rival to Ubermensch Arnie. It is utterly unconvincing and rubbish in every way, but still fantastic. I wonder if a teenager would get it today?
