watched John Wick part 1 and 2 last night..
thought 1 was good... 2 was a bit meh... thought the fights scenes were very slow and clunky compared to the first - lot's of arm/legs out waiting to be hit etc...
Question is... is part 3 worth a watch??
The first is the best of them. There never was much more to the character than we saw in that!thought 1 was good... 2 was a bit meh... thought the fights scenes were very slow and clunky compared to the first - lot's of arm/legs out waiting to be hit etc...
Question is... is part 3 worth a watch??

1 was the best, 2 and 3 are about equal imho. (ie not as good as 1)thought 1 was good... 2 was a bit meh... thought the fights scenes were very slow and clunky compared to the first - lot's of arm/legs out waiting to be hit etc...
Question is... is part 3 worth a watch??

I think I need a second viewing as I know I'm not clever enough to have seen all of the film in a single viewing. I spent this viewing following the twists of the story, seeing the obvious social commentary whilst appreciating the cinematography at a simplistic level.
Now I know what happens, I feel my focus on a second viewing will enable a deeper dive in the composition, its layered tonality and to catch more of the metaphors ....
That's great if that's how you choose to watch movies. Watching again, studying every single frame, looking for such things may even appeal to me if I had no idea what I had just watched and required such things to gain an understanding. I really don't, though. I wouldn't gain a single thing from finding a hidden meaning in something subtle, here. I may watch again in the future, but it will only be because it was a decent movie. Now I know what happens, I feel my focus on a second viewing will enable a deeper dive in the composition, its layered tonality and to catch more of the metaphors ....
I even did a Google search relating to items in the movie out of curiosity and the director during interviews (ones with spoiler warnings) reveals there was no real depth to several items, they were just items and experiences he took from his own life. There were also several things mentioned that many of us wouldn't understand, because they related to those areas and types of people portrayed and several parts he had no intention of using to make people think a certain way, rather, they just started thinking that way. During another part of one interview, he says certain camera angles and events others are suggesting were used for specific reasons, were only done due to camera restrictions or due to their being too many reflections etc.
I think people are making this rather more complicated than it needs to be and are becoming overexcited in the same way they are when a famous painter drops a single blob of paint onto a canvas and then has people spend hours and hours staring at it because they see such glorious things in the application and structure, the use of paint and the brush stroke and....

Recently watched Last Jedi
Not a massive SW fan. But I enjoyed the Force Awakens with the new characters Raymond and Finley. So with all the hype about the new one, decided to catch up.
Made sense to me. Few little jokes which were good. Surprised to see Laura Dern and Benico del Toro were in it.
Not as long as the reviews seemed to make it.
7.5/10

I have seen them all before but over last couple of days I have started watching Star Wars again. I started with Episode 1 so I have done them in time line order. Ep 1,2,3 and Rogue 1 so far.
I have missed so much in the past, so watching them again has helped me fill in the gaps and it just keeps getting better. I have the original 3 to watch next followed by the 2 new ones before I watch Ep 9.
I can see why the critics say watch them in release order as in Ep 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3 because I think the magic in the original Star War films was not knowing about Darth Vader, Luke and Lela.

In two we see more of the wick universe and lore. More about the continental etc and what’s going on in the world of these hitmen and high table
Which for me in the first one was what elevated it from normal action movie to something special.
I personally prefer two to the first one. Which without the other stuff would just be a simple revenge flick.
Now the third one yeah is pretty good. The fight scenes are not as good all the way through although some are awesome but the guy is 50 ffs give him a break.
the scenes with the dogs were awesome and I loved that Japanese guy. He cracked me up. Yes a gain we see more of the parallel universe they live in.
All three John wick films are awesome in my humble opinion. Completely at contrast to the taken films which just suck after the first one.
The Lighthouse.
I wanted something a bit spooky and atmospheric for Christmas Eve, and this one delivered.
Not sure if it’s out in the UK yet but if not, I’m sure it soon will be.
What a lot of mental fked up st. Just superb. Totally atmospheric. Weird 4:3 ratio black and white cinematic style that conveys the total sense of isolation, a hard life, a descent into madness. The sense of unease is conveyed well throughout. Pattinson is elevated from lightweight tween vampire bks and finally transforms into a serious Oscar wannabe. Defoe is also brilliant.
My other pick for 2019 was Midsommar, this one I watched months ago in the summer, but it still sticks in the mind and few films do that. My ‘review’ is earlier in the weird films thread. Warning, both are hard going and long, but are worth the investment.
Eight drams of tainted wick oil out of ten lost mermaids.
