Gremlins was my Xmas choice, and it's still fantastic. Even after watching it countless times over the years there were a few little background details I never noticed before. Kindof surprised there's never been a soulless CGI remake.

The Lighthouse.

I wanted something a bit spooky and atmospheric for Christmas Eve, and this one delivered.

Not sure if it’s out in the UK yet but if not, I’m sure it soon will be.

What a lot of mental fked up st. Just superb. Totally atmospheric. Weird 4:3 ratio black and white cinematic style that conveys the total sense of isolation, a hard life, a descent into madness. The sense of unease is conveyed well throughout. Pattinson is elevated from lightweight tween vampire bks and finally transforms into a serious Oscar wannabe. Defoe is also brilliant.

My other pick for 2019 was Midsommar, this one I watched months ago in the summer, but it still sticks in the mind and few films do that. My ‘review’ is earlier in the weird films thread. Warning, both are hard going and long, but are worth the investment.

Eight drams of tainted wick oil out of ten lost mermaids.
Watched The Lighthouse couple of days ago, pretty grim wasnt it, thought is was excellent.

My favourite christmas film, and makes me think I should change how I live my life for the worse.
F**k me Santa smile
Love that movie, still piss myself laughing in the boxing scene; that and Uncle Buck are my go to Xmas movies

watched John Wick part 1 and 2 last night..

thought 1 was good... 2 was a bit meh... thought the fights scenes were very slow and clunky compared to the first - lot's of arm/legs out waiting to be hit etc...

Question is... is part 3 worth a watch??
1 good
2 is 1 with the plot and charm replaced with shooting
3 is just shooting and shheeeit

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

What a bizarre movie. No really plot to speak of, mostly people driving around in cars in the sun, a bat-st insane last 30 minutes, a wasted Margot Robbie, looks very nice but it’s kind of dull unless you’re a fan of sixties Hollywood. Also carries less significance if you’re not aware of a particular historical event in Hollywood.

Maybe it’s an age thing but I didn’t get it.

Yes, an age thing. Previous knowledge essential. There is great info on YouTube.

I remember the reporting on the news, really horrific and shocking!

Where'd You Go, Bernadette?

I found it quite enjoyable. It's a marmite film, clearly, as reviews range from 10/10 to 1/10.

Ad Astra

What was Brad thinking? Blatently ripping off Apocalypse Now. Terrible voice over. Terrible plot. (What was the monkeys all about?)

I wanted this to be a decent sci-fi flick but it was anything but unfortunately. frown

Good innit, I was hoping for something similar with Rocketman, which was very well done but had large portions of musical which I generally detest, lead guy does Elton very well though 6/10 for me but probably that is harsh

Finally caught Avengers: Endgame as its on Sky Cinema. First 90 minutes were a bit long and drawn out, second 90 minutes brilliant. Nicely rounded off the first marvel series.

As an aside, I was disappointed how few premiers and newish films were on non-subscription channels over the Christmas period. I have quite a backlog of Marvel films to watch before I can watch Endgame and was hoping that a few might be shown on terrestrial* channels. I think Civil War was shown once on an ITV channel only I missed it and it has not been repeated. But Infinity War, for example, has not been shown on a terrestrial channel over Christmas to my knowledge.

It's all been the same old same old.

(* - when I say terrestrial, I include freeview / freesat channels. Also, I have a basic Sky HD Entertainment package but do not have Sky Cinema)

Yeah, I thought that was weak too. I did notice sky one put the third how to train your dragon film on, I guess as a christmas treat.
civil war was on in august. but I dont think mcu spider-man or thor3 has been on.

This isn’t going to be a popular post/opinion, please don’t shoot!

I’m 38 and until last night had never seen blade runner. I watched the HD directors cut on Netflix.

It was good, not great. The scenery, the direction, the feel of the film were all fantastic. The dialogue was poor and Harrison ford can’t act.

Granted, on release I can see how it had a massive impact for being so different and for those amazing visuals. I just expected more from the scriptwriting and acting. It’s not as though the 70s was short of gritty realistic films so it just felt odd to me.

I saw it recently for the first time and thought it was dull, so you’re not the only one.

I went to see Cats...

a bit "trippy" in places, zero plot.. don't go if you don't know the songs ...

6.5 whiskers pouches out of 10 ... I didn't dislike it...

I much preferred Rocketman to BohemianRhapsody. I found the fellow who played Freddie Mercury a wee bit wooden & far too toothy.

Not sure anybody could convincingly play a rock icon like Freddie Mercury & actually pull it off.

I know the queen one was a massive success but i found it a bit MEH..

It's quite dependent on version. If I remember correctly, the Director's Cut still has the Film Noir voiceover narration that Ridley Scott never wanted (despite it ostensibly being his cut). The Final Cut which came after removes that, and makes it feel like quite a different film.

Having said that, it is of its time and has aged. Many of the things that were groundbreaking at the time might feel cliche now, but only because it came first and is the origin of some of the cliches.

However, I'd really recommend you follow it up with Bladerunner 2049. The cinematography is fantastic, and it is a genuine and worthy sequel. Some people consider the first half to be rather slow and boring, but on the contrary I love that part of it and when the action picks up in the final part of the film is where it goes downhill for me but I think I am in a minority there.

April and the Extraordinary World

I watched this a while back when it was included with Amazon Prime, although it is no longer so. But I recently managed to source this on Bluray as an import and it arrived today, so I'm just settling down to rewatch it.

It's a French animated film that has elements of anime style (think Studio Ghibli) but also with definite Gallic influences with hints of TinTin in the animation style, so an interesting mix which gives it a unique style of its own. To call it French anime would be to damn it with faint praise.

It's a retro-futuristic tale that spans many years, and has elements of steampunk & dieselpunk about it, but is not defined by those genres. It's utterly charming though, and a real hidden gem.
