Just watching Full Metal Jacket on ITV4. Joker’s on fire watch and has just stumbled across Private Pyle in the can. Hartman will be in any second now...

Been ages since I’ve seen it and is just as gripping smile

Once upon a time in Hollywood

Not great not terrible. Loved the last ten minutes but not sure what I think about rewriting such a gruesome murder.

Birds of Prey

Off shoot of Suicide Squad focussing on Harly Quinn. An all female cast (bar McGregor as villian) and actually pretty entertaining, and not the horrendous mess of the Ghostbusters-type movie (as in shove it in your face look at this all female cast). I guess that comes from having a female director for the film.

Anyway quite a few laughs, but there's some really dark torture scenes that surprised made the cut.

7.5/10
Suicide Squad was so dire that I don't know if I can bring myself to watch it TBH.

SS was the film that turned me off DC. I broke that rule for Shazam and Joker because I kept an eye on the vibe and had an inkling I'd enjoy them, and I did.
I might watch SS2 as it's James Gunn and he does good stuff. I won't watch BoP though because it looked bad from the start and from stuff I've watched, I was correct.

Hidden Figures

As recommended earlier. Excellent film, thoroughly enjoyed it. Obviously a bit Americanised but aren’t these always.

It is easy to forget how racist the Americans were in the 50s and 60s.

8.3/10

Watched the Wolf Of Wall Street over the weekend.

Haven't seen so much debauchery, drinking and drug related madness for some time.

Well worth a watch for some of the performances.

Yum Elizabeth Olsen and 45-70 action. What’s not to like.
Just watched it. I'm guessing that's his little and big gun. wink
when he was making his own ammo I did think of you. laugh
Wow, what a great film. One of my fave of the past few years.
When that cop exclaims, 'you didn't see it? You didn't see it!' I knew he was telling the truth, but I didn't expect what happened, a shock that I felt in my stomach!
Grim...and I wasn't sure what was going to happen....read the wiki page which is always a good sign.
The sound on film4 was a bit flaky though, had to wazz the volume up to max for some dialogue.
Great film, reminded me of the other films like it, but also of Thunderheart, one of my favourite films of the 1990s, and a film I can rewatch whenever it's on.
Not sure I'd watch WInd River again though...thought it would be over, checked the time and there was 30 mins to go, good because the blokes died too quick.

I'd totally agree with SS - I didn't like it one bit and it could have been sooo much more. I'll see the second one if/when it comes out, but honestly birds of prey wasn't bad even considering I wasn't the demographic it was aimed at.

On Sunday, my wife said “Is there anything worth downloading that we could watch tonight?”
I had a look on Catch-Up, and there was a movie, “While we’re young”, with Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts, so I downloaded it.
I put it on around 21.15, at 21.40 my wife said, “Seriously? Do you want to keep watching this?”
I said, “Sure, it’s not hitting the spot, I don’t like it, but maybe it might come to life.”
She said, “Let me know, I’ll be in the kitchen on the iPad.”

Ben Stiller is bloody annoying though (apart from Zoolander-ish).

The Senator (2017)
DVD

Post party, US Senator & JFK's bro; Ted Kennedy, stacks his Olds Deltona 88 with fatal consequences.

Adaptation of Senator Ted's infamous Chappaquiddick Incident, set against a back drop of Apollo 11 closing in on the Moon. Decent period feel, good cast - Jason Clarke as Kennedy, & background political machinations involving Kennedy Snr.

Miami Vice (2006)
DVD

Drug cops vs drug smugglers; night clubs, Ferrari's speedboats & AK's for dressing.

Re-watched this one after it came up in the Miami Vice TV show sub-thread, last saw it at the cinema. More to appreciate than I remember - Michael Mann visuals superb, decent score & ultimate futility of the job all good; puddle deep lead characters spoil it though.

Thief (1981)
DVD

Long-time tealeaf, James Caan, looking for his retirement score naively hooks up with the Chicago mob & the particularly unpleasant boss Robert Prosky.

More Mann - his debut file & an excellent one, first 15 mins in particular are superb. Lots of heist detail and plenty of Heat cues (unsurprisingly) - master & apprentice driving a Caddy & a 'Vette was pretty cool.

I've not seen it before but it was certainly entertaining, even more so now that I've discovered that Jordan Balfour is a real person and it was based on his life! My wife was keen to watch it as she worked in London in the city in the early 90's and though she says it's obviously extreme, it's not that far from what was going on during the late 80's.

Think I need to watch it again soon.

Its excellent and the cast give it thier all. a small part of me pines for the 80/90's again ;-)

on what could be not more opposite we watched Mary Poppins - The Return.

really nice film actually, captured the original spirit i thought - although to be honest how annoying are upper class 1930's era english children!!!!!!!!!

Not seen The Return and I struggle with most kid related films as most of the characters are over the top. "The Sixth Sense" and anything with Dakota Fanning are exceptions.

I recently was forced to sit through "Enchanted" which is a kids film. However, I did actually enjoy it and the performances are very good and highly amusing. Well worth a watch.

I tried to resist the temptation but, in the end I caved:-

Rambo: Last Blood

The first film has always been one of my favourites. The small town setting, the bigoted police force, the manhunt and the ultimate showdown - fantastic cinema!

John Rambo's swansong was not of the same calibre sadly. It wasn't bad exactly but, it certainly wasn't great. It was a watchable, by the numbers revenge flick - a modern day 'Death Wish' if you like.

The move has a poster tagline about how Rambo must confront his past - well, unless I missed something pretty obvious, all his adversaries in this movie were new acquaintances - perhaps it was his internal demons he was confronting but, the movie unsurprisingly doesn't explore his motives in any great depth.

I'll give it a fanboy's 6/10 - just make sure you adjust your expectations accordingly before going in smile

Pretty diverse viewing now , The Two Popes

Brilliantly acted by Anthony Hopkins as the Austrian Pope Benedict XVI and Jonathan Pryce as the future Pope Francis.

I am not usually keen on dramas but this was excellent and gave me a chance to have a good rib at my catholic raised wife!

8.0 funny white hats/10 over large crucifixes
For a devout atheist I found it compelling , the acting was very good , almost as if it was unscripted. Of course it can only be based on the supposed conversations between the two , but nevertheless conveyed the story of the Pope resigning
Each was playing himself , but the same time making the character believable .
And I must say a couple of times my chin wobbled .
Just finished watching this based on these 2 reviews, a very good film - great dialogues and acting. I'm not at all religious but really enjoyed the conversations they had.

8.5 / 10
Watched this at the weekend off the back of these reviews, and agree completely... just a lovely film, excellently acted!

I know I'm late to the party but just watched 6 Underground.

WTF was that.

Film some good action scenes
But of comedy
Big name star

Going well. Now let's get a 6 year old to edit it together. Does it make sense? Does it fk.
I normally like Ryan Reynolds, but this was utter, utter dross. I switched it off after 40 minutes.

Re watched The Godfather over 3 nights last week. What an epic piece of film making. The 1st is fabulous, the 2nd tops it, and the 3rd, whilst not in the same class, was nowhere near as bad as I remember. Sits alongside Star Wars and LOTRs as a perfect trilogy.

I'd say give 6 Underground another try. I turned it off after the sillyish beginning but it settles down and isn't that bad of a film.
The Godfather films are my favourite. Just masterclass.
The only thing that pisses me off in the films is Sonnys temper laugh So Stupid he was.

Jordan Belfort his name is. The Lamborghini scene is exaggerated a little and it was a Mercedes, not a countach.

It's a brilliant film though and I like a lot of what Di Daprio does.
