Parasite

IMO thought provoking but surely over hyped.
Oscar and Palm d'or - really ?
Perhaps got applauded because the competition was poor.
Enough said - wish I had gone to see 1917 instead.

I've seen both, totally different films both are excellent.

Train to Busan.

Excellent. Got to be up there as one of the best zombie films.

Up there with 28 days later.

Prisoners. 2hrs 33. Netflix.

Jackman and Gylenhaal. I enjoy Gylenhaals acting in this film. Jackman shows a bit of Wolverine in his character hehe

I’ve seen it before but I still enjoyed it again.

1917 is also over hyped. I think the film buffs are too focussed on the cinematography techniques. At the "human story" level it's just good.

Both worth watching in my opinion, very different.

I was kinda nervous about recommending Parasite to my colleagues, I personally thought it was the best film I've seen in many, many years but my tastes are pretty eclectic. But since Friday 5 of my 12 colleagues (a fairly broad cross section, young and old) have been to see it and they all thought it was exceptional. They all went in completely blind (no trailers, no plot synopsis) which I think helps massively. Even the clips during the Oscars gave away some really critical moments.

Just watching Full Metal Jacket on ITV4. Joker’s on fire watch and has just stumbled across Private Pyle in the can. Hartman will be in any second now...

Been ages since I’ve seen it and is just as gripping smile

I absolutely love that movie.

"...I have tried to help him [Private Pyle], but I have failed. I have failed because YOU have not helped Me. You people have not given Private Pyle the proper motivation. So, from now on, whenever Private Pyle fks up, I will not punish him, i will punish all of YOU. And the way i see it ladies, you owe me for one jelly donut. Now get on your faces. Open your mouth - they're payin' for it, you eat it..."

I went away for the weekend with my wife, and we spent a night at Warner's Studley Castle hotel. Nice enough, if you like fighting off pensioners at the breakfast buffet. Storm Ciara put paid to any outdoor plans we had (we'd wanted to take a walk on the shortened version of the Arden Way) so we booked a couple of films in their cute little "cinema" in the main castle. There can't have been more than thirty seats in there, mostly in the form of two-seater sofas. And the films were no extra cost so we thought "why not" while the wind blew and the rain fell.

Two great films...

'Mary, Queen Of Scots' and 'Red Joan'. I'd seen them both before, but was more than happy to sit through them again. I got a lot more out of Mary, Queen Of Scots the second time around too. I think because I understood the background better having recently watched a documentary or two with my history-obsessed wife. Saoirse Ronan was brilliant as Mary, and the film looked fabulous.

In Red Joan, as a big fan of Judi dench I knew what to expect from her, but was really impressed by Sophie Cookson playing the younger Joan. I recognised a few locations in the film, including 'Building R133', one of the old RAE wind tunnels in Farnborough doubling as a nuclear research facility in Canada. The whole film looked 'period correct' even if it really wasn't, as the "feel" of it was just spot on. I also liked Nina Sosanya as the arresting MI5 officer Ms Hart. One of those films where I felt an investment in the characters, and ended up caring about their fates. Beautifully shot too. Well worth a watch, unless you're looking for Bond-style car chases and gun battles. Because there are none of those...

Just watched You Were Never Really Here which I recorded off Film 4. Interesting would be one word I would use to describe it. Joaquin Phoenix is very good in the lead role. Quite violent at times so probably not to everyone's taste.

Odd film but I guess that's the point. Didn't find it hugely funny (the best joke is in the trailer.) and I found the imaginary character actually more of a self indulgence by the director than anything that drove the plot along. Maybe I thought it was going have as many genuine laughs in it as The Producers but it fell well short of that.

But its certainly not say it was a bad movie. All the cast were excellent and the big shock about half way through drew a huge gasp from the audience I was with. It was very well done as was the tribute to a more recent pop star at the end. And to be fair, the Gestapo search and "Go and give the first non-German that you see a big hug!" were pretty funny.

Its an enjoyable experience but I won't need to see it again.

Harley Quinn / Birds of Prey or whatever the hell it's called now.

Actually ok, the action sequences and fight choreography are worth the price of admission alone, the police station fight is stunning.

However, it tries to be clever with time jumps and it just ends up meaning sequences happen out of context for no reason whatsoever.

I would have liked more Birds of Prey as it suffers from the usual problem these days of spending most of a movie setting up a sequel which is probably never going to happen. Huntress is awesome but gets very little time to shine.

The Lighthouse

One of those films I'm glad I saw on the big screen (cinematography is gorgeous and honestly it would be hard to watch on a TV) but that I will never watch again in my life.

As descents into madness go this pulls you in for the ride and doesn't let up. Wonderful, crazy film.

I'm honestly surprised it's had universal praise because it's not an easy watch at all.

The BBFC title card said "strong sex, nudity, violence, gore, disturbing images", quite something for a film that is literally just two guys on a rock!!

Portrait of a lady on fire

French film, gets extremely positive reviews. However its a decent film, but, I think its getting amazing reviews because the Americans are only just discovering foreign films... This is the standard fare you'd see late on Channel 4 on a Friday night 20 years ago with Gerard Depardue...

9 out of 10 scantily dressed, confused smoking French girls.
