The Predator last night.

I tried to dismiss all the dreadful reviews and give it a fair shot, but, dear God, it was awful. So many attempted call-backs to the "good" movies it was getting desperate.

Underwater

Wafer thin story stretched over just a 90 minute run time. I’m not a fan of modern horror films going for jump scares though and they certainly don’t fit with the Lovecraftian direction of this films story. I think that would have been better served without the cheap parlour tricks.

That said there’s still a lot to like about it. As a Lovecraft fan it’s nice to see his influence on the story, in wouldn’t be surprised if this was based on one of his short stories.

Great production design even if it is a bit of a rip off of the original ALIEN. original creature design too.

Worth a look, especially if you’re a fan of HPLs work.

If its the one im thinking about (made by the guy who was in Predator) then i belive half the movie is his and the rest was a reshoot that was ordered for him to do by the studio as they hated the direction he was going with it - so he just basically threw in the towel and disowned it - IIRC.

That's the one - it's a complete mess.

It's the way every legacy franchise has gone. And now they want to do another Thing...as if the prequel from years ago didn't turn everybody off.

Summertime, 1955. Katherine Hepburn as a Billy no mates on hols alone in Venice. Watching it now on Talking Pictures. Wonderful, Venice never looked so good, just ordinary people never looked so good.

I was kinda nervous about recommending Parasite to my colleagues, I personally thought it was the best film I've seen in many, many years but my tastes are pretty eclectic. But since Friday 5 of my 12 colleagues (a fairly broad cross section, young and old) have been to see it and they all thought it was exceptional. They all went in completely blind (no trailers, no plot synopsis) which I think helps massively. Even the clips during the Oscars gave away some really critical moments.
Yep, standard routine

excellent film
gradually builds critical acclaim
wins awards and lots of public raving
excellent film then becomes "overrated"

Couple more that I've watched this week...

High Fidelity (2000) DVD

Indy record shop owner John Cusack questions his life after another failed relationship.

Not seen this for years, good stuff. Rom-com w/ some edge, decent soundtrack, cool record shop setting & bonus Saab 900 content.

The Old Man & The Gun (2018) DVD

Serial bank robber, a sprightly octogenarian Robert Redford; hides his craft from new love, Sissy Spacek. Disillusioned cop, Casey Affleck connects the robberies & is determined to catch the crook.

Loosely based on the life of real life crim, Forrest Tucker, I really enjoyed this one. Great main & supporting cast, ‘70’s/’80’s feel & Redford’s penultimate film.

Snowpiecer. Based on twaddle, but wow, what a great film, just forget the stuff that doesn't make sense, and it certainly wasn't formula. biggrin

Parasite - Nice, but agree, over hyped
Jojo Rabbit - Enjoyed this immensely, great film and will definitely watch again
Knives Out - Nicely done but a bit meh, couldn't get over DC's accent
Ford vs Ferrari - Enjoyed the story and tried very hard to ignore the usual Hollywood car stuff that ruin films for me
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood - Perhaps you need to know of the main character to get this, as a result this sort of passed me by, nice enough story and good support acting

Sonic tomorrow with the kids, lets see if it lives up to the reviews

Harley Quinn / Birds of Prey or whatever the hell it's called now.

Actually ok, the action sequences and fight choreography are worth the price of admission alone, the police station fight is stunning.

However, it tries to be clever with time jumps and it just ends up meaning sequences happen out of context for no reason whatsoever.

I would have liked more Birds of Prey as it suffers from the usual problem these days of spending most of a movie setting up a sequel which is probably never going to happen. Huntress is awesome but gets very little time to shine.
Pitch Meeting covered this fairly well, with a little dig at the fact that the Birds of Prey barely got a look-in and it was all about Harley Quinn because she's the character that people know about and hence the one who is bankable. smile

Pitch Meeting introduce it as "Harley Quinn: The Movie (oh and also by the way Birds of Prey)" hehe

Smiler.

The Lighthouse - Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. Psychological thriller with bits of comedy. Recommended to watch in the cinema due to the sound. 7/10

The fog horn is still haunting me. So atmospheric.

Plus it's going to be very small on a modern TV due to the aspect ratio!
