Solo: A Star Wars Story
Discussion
Whats wrong with all these idiot disney films? They kill of characters then think you want to watch some film about thier early days.
Hands solo : never going to be happy and be killed by his son.
Luke skywalker : miserable failure living in a shack in the woods. Gets killed.
The only interesting new characters were in rogue one and they all got killed. They should have been making films about them.
What a load of moronic ste.

Seems getting stabbed or even cut in half by a Lightsabre and tossed off a bridge into the darkness isn't always terminal in SW, you never know, it might turn up again in 9. Hands solo : never going to be happy and be killed by his son.

I wouldn’t want to “fall out” with you as I find the vast majority of your posts both insightful and interesting. I do think on this occasion you’ve got it wrong though.
I think it’s important to form your own opinion prior to too much outside influence.
In the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter I guess. After all it is just a film.
quite, and fundamentally, and even by my own conduct (I forced myself to watch GHosutbusters 2016 to see for myself) you are completely correct. I just couldn't bring myself to travel into the city and spent money on it, my cinema habits have chnaged alot in recent years, and now I'll only go for something I'm near 100% excited for. and I'm not a downloader, but I'll gladly watch it on telly. THen I'll know for sure. I think it’s important to form your own opinion prior to too much outside influence.

edit to add, once upon a time I went to the cinema maybe once a week. THis year, I've been...I know definitely twice, maybe three times.

I'm sure they have convinced themselves that is the truth but it's not done Marvel any harm (how many this year alone?)
I know there are various argument about why SW is different but I don't buy it. Doesn't effect sci-fi/fantasy TV series until the quality drops. Most of the time people want more not less. It's the same core audience type.
Make a great film/series and people will watch it.

Marvel has so many standalone amazing stories and characters though. How many people outside die hard fans want to see expanded universe stuff? The stories outside the Skywalker ones will not draw casual crowds. I know there are various argument about why SW is different but I don't buy it. Imagine a Hawkeye origin story. I certainly wouldn’t give a toss about it. Probably why he’s been largely written out.
On another note, I can’t believe they haven’t announced ‘Obi Wan’ story with Ewan McGregor. Now that I would instantly pay to see.

I'd argue most people's knowledge of superheros extends to Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman and the Hulk, essentially the one who have been in a TV series. I'm quite geeky but not into comics. I'd heard of Iron Man, Capt America and Thor but beyond those I start struggling.
Marvel have built knowledge of the lesser known heros piece by piece.

I keep seeing reports that the hatred towards TLJ is about the racism and sexism, and that it’s “arguably the best Star Wars film ever” The abuse towards the cast (if real as I read reports that a lot was fabricated) was disgusting. However I don’t think they can hide the crapness of the film behind that. Maybe the cast did receive abuse from a minority of fans, doesn’t change the fact that the majority of fans simply thought it was awful.

Isn’t that cutting your nose off to spite your face though?
TLJ was terrible, there is no doubt. However to write off a source of enjoyment because of a mistake is a bit extreme.
Disney will know TLJ was an error. They will be doing everything possible to correct it. They have too much invested to do anything else. The only possible risk is they mistake the valid criticism for toxic fandom, but I doubt they are that stupid.
I'm not saying I won't ever see it. Just that I won't go to the cinema. I'll watch a friends DVD if it's available in the future, maybe, but as TLJ was so bad I have no real interest. I don't believe for a second that Disney will do anything to change this at the moment, Solo still brought in £ even though takings were massively down and they can spin that how they like, in reality there is only one reason, they were down because people like me never went to the cinema and saw it.TLJ was terrible, there is no doubt. They can't spin the fact that the movie lost money. The global box office haul didn't match it's combined production/marketing budget (~$400 million as a low estimate), and that's before we even account for the fact that Disney will likely only get around half of the box office take anyway (so probably less than $200 million)Watched solo for the first time last night. I really enjoyed it! So so much better than TLJ!
But - it did seem like a two hour skit of trying to make every little bit of debatable folklore about Star Wars have a backstory in it. Han’s name, the parsec thing, meeting chewie, etc. A bit much IMO.

IMDB and other was flooded with 5 star reviews before anyone had seen it (okay, fanboys are known to do that)'
IMHO only Friendly' critics were allowed to see it pre-release
There was a massive, massive push for fans not to 'spoil' it for others when they had seen it.
Unlike most films, most fans won't go near a real-person review before they've seen it in fear of spoilers..
All this was done to ensure a big opening weekend / week.
Then, when fans had actually seen it there was a massive back-lash, then came the 'victim blaming' marketing push - oh you didn't like it? You must be a closet racist/masochist.
This was done to sew enough doubt in the mind of people who hadn't seen it yet to go to see it. See, it's not a bad film, it's probably just fanbois getting all upset because of some minor cast choice or something.
Finally came the real kicker when most people who were going to see it, saw it- oh you didn't like it? Well, sorry if we didn't make the film YOU wanted to see. blah blah blah.
It's a refined version of the campaign that was run for Ghostbusters. That was a $144m turd that will probably manage to break even some time down the road with merchandise / home viewers.
TLJ is a $220m turd that made a billion because, well, even a turd that followed the brilliant Force Awakens / Rogue One, was going to break even, but still, well played by Disney.
This popped up on my to watch yt feed. Double K reckons the film will break even on home sales
