I've got a 1971 UFO annual so ner ner, nan ner ner.
I've got the annual as well, plus an Interceptor (with missile). I also gifted a spare Interceptor I had to well-known movie critic Mark Kermode (who is a big fan of the series and uses the theme music as his walk-on music at his monthly BFI shows). He fired the missile of the toy at Gerry Anderson's son when he was on the Radio 5 movie review show. (How's that for a tenuous connection to the show?)

A great tribute to Gerry Anderson and his TV Shows..
A clip from every episode of every show in 15 minutes..

"Anything can happen in the next half hour!!"

Such an incredible body of work..
Enjoyed that. Thanks.

Captain Scarlet is, for some reason, most memorable for me.... brought back memories of a more innocent time.
Speaking of an incredible body of work, must watch Galaxy Quest again.......

I have a full hairy chest like that pic of Paul Foster earlier.

Girls don't seem to like it now hehe

I seem to remember it got pushed to a late night time slot when the TV company realised how dark and not suitable for kids it was.

When Paul Foster turned against Straker and in the end Straker tries to force Paul to kill him in order to see if he was no longer an enemy....

I cried at that episode.

Breathing that green liquid and Paul panicking still haunts me decades later.

I had an interceptor and the Shado truck. Missiles lost within minutes biggrin

Some of the old boys I've worked with in telly tell me that the gullwing doors on Strakers car were too heavy to lift on their own so on camera the car would park so that a scene hand could hop over and lift the door out of shot.

Opening sequence.

Is this what I think it is, were they using fine sand dropped out of the boosters to simulate thrusters?

Still have this record from when I was a kid.

A boring Thunderbirds story on one side and a cool Captain Scarlet one on the other side, where the Mysterons take over a nuclear passenger plane and he has to get aboard it to blow it up.

Very cool sounds from the Angel fighters and the nuclear plane. cool

I used to have a Stingray record - One one side was a story and on the other was the same story, but with a character (Phones or Troy, I forget now) left out, so that you could play that part.

Sure I don't have it now, probably because I played it to death! smile

Plucking out an alien's contact lens on prime-time family TV. Nice. It really was a dark and creepy show underneath all the shiny whizzy high-tech sheen.

Those UFO Interceptors were an appalling design. One shot at your target and that's yer lot!

I know one that does and she was a right little goer when I knew her (in the biblical sense IYSWIM) but sadly she is now in the final throes of her seventh decade and lives 12,000 miles away anyway...

Girls seem to like what they are told to like by fashion gurus, in the days of the first edtion of 'The Joy of Sex' by Alex Comfort hairiness was de rigeur.

I recall one of these cars parked up in a sorry state on someone's drive in Wanstead East London during the early 70s. It was in the next road to where I grew up. I wonder were there any replica's made?

You could also put an individual cap behind the missile (from your toy gun roll of caps) to make a bang to scare the dog!

I watched the first episode after reading this thread... Straker smoking and having a drinks dispenser in his office, routine sexual harassment, the girl on the moon base changing into a mini skirt just for her coffee break, clunky plot explanations..

Need to find episode 2 today

hehe

Managed to find all episodes on an 'archive' website online. Will be binge watching the rest over the next few evenings.

I also watched the one where an alien and one of the moonbase crew get stranded together. Quite thought provoking for what was essentially a kids program.

That's the point, it WASN'T really a kid's programme. That's what made it different to what had gone before. Anderson had been more or less railroaded into puppet based TV series for children by Lew Grade at ITC (who commissioned all of these Anderson series). Anderson desperately wanted to move away from children's TV so it seemed logical to him to maintain the expertise they had built up using models and special effects but apply it to a programme aimed at adults.

It has to be said that, in period, it was not very well received. As I said earlier, looking back on it now, we can see that it was a brave effort.

It wasn't though (unless you consider ALL sci-fi to be kids stuff).

This (and the latter and rather dull, I always thought, Space 1999) were Anderson's attempt to break out of the 'kids stuff' mould and the storylines were far too dark and complex for children - Death was nearly always involved, as was pyschological or physical torture and more than a hint of sex (for TV for the time).

I bought the first half of the series on DVD a few years back - Some episodes have stood the test of time well, but others look horribly clunky and hammy. Moonbase is particularly hilarious - Why would the women who work there have any need to wear purple wigs????!?!?!?

I keep thinking I'll treat myself to the second half, but haven't got around to it yet.

Whereas The Sweeney (I know, VERY different) holds up very well to rewatching, UFO is, for me, more an exercise in nostalgia.

I still get excited when Skydiver launches though, definitely my favourite Anderson machine! biggrin
