Looks like it could be a particularly upsetting one this evening - 2 kids:

I’ve watched it

probably the worst one of the entire programme. A scumbag of the absolute highest order for whom death would be too kind

Agonising viewing.

Yes it wasn't pleasant viewing that one, I still think small cars don't offer enough protection for rear seat occupants in this type of accident, hence my liking for large saloons and estates that have 4ft between the tailgate and rear seats.

37 phone calls and 2.5 times the limit. You just wish he could have hit the barrier on his own somewhere instead.

What gets me is there's loads of s like this guy around, who keep getting away with being reckless and putting other road users at risk; using the phone or driving while drunk or on drugs, only one day they won't get away with it, sadly this time it's two young kids and their poor parents who have to pay the ultimate price, the scum always seem to come out unharmed. He deserved the full 14 years, and more, he shouldn't have got a shorter sentence for a guilty plea, he didn't deserve one. I can only hope he's haunted for the rest of his life by what he's done.

Been done for drink driving and being on his phone before as well. He should be banned from driving for life. Period.

He won’t give a st, previous convictions have done nothing to alter his behaviour. He will get out and carry on just as before, he is just scum.

When they initially arrested him I wondered why they hadn't done a breath test... clearly they were saving that for later in the programme.

The guy won't give two hoots, has previous for the same, he'll just sit in prison for 9 years and then get on with his sorry little life unfortunately, and I'd bet money he'll be back behind a wheel drunk/drugs before long.

But that poor family, losing two children and the mother with from the sound of it life changing injuries, this will haunt them forever and I just cannot imagine what they must go through every day, and no doubt the programme and the scenes of the accident, the detruction of their car, kids car seats, coats etc will just open up wounds that probably hadn't healed anyway.

Unfortunately for them they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, which doesn't help them one bit. The guy was going to crash at some point given the CCTV footage and they were just there.

I found myself getting more and more frustrated as the episode went on with the driver.

Over the limit, on the phone, previous history of phone use and DUI and the culmination of that is the death of 2 young children. Absolutely disgraceful.

On the hard shoulder for 120m before the impact!! furious

This should absolutely be the case of a maximum sentence with no mitigation whatsoever. In fact with his previous convictions, they should be adding years on instead of taking them off!

I reiterated to the wife again yesterday, that even if it's raining, cold and blowing a gale, you get out of the car and get behind the barrier as this is the sort of thing that can happen. Not that this is in anyway, shape or form the fault of the mother, but I did wince when they said the reason for the stop was the daughter not feeling well. Unless the car couldn't move, just get off at the next services or junction and then at least cretins like the van driver will hopefully only kill themselves.

Let’s not forget he was also on coke, streaming YouTube and had an open bottle of wine in the van.

Just about the worst possible combination of things you could do when driving imaginable, unfortunately in a horrible symmetry also resulted in an equally worse outcome.

The thing that I noticed was the comment that "there had been multiple calls in about the manner of his driving." It wasn't made clear if this was during his journey or post collision. Think I have remembered the words used, but that was the gist of the sentiment expressed.

All I have to say is that if you're paying attention it doesn't need a trained police driver's nose to spot where something isn't right. Personally I'm not sure how I would feel about someone driving like a complete tool like that guy, not reporting it, and then finding out they'd gone on to do something like that.

Not suggesting anyone should go into dashcam warrior mode and report every minor infraction, but if we're honest we should know when the standard of driving is so far below that required that urgent intervention is required.

At least some good news in the BBC article linked yesterday, the couple have since had another child

Also a good advert for SUV's, although with a such an impact speed there will still be huge damage in any vehicle
