Personally I'm not sure how I would feel about someone driving like a complete tool like that guy, not reporting it, and then finding out they'd gone on to do something like that.

Not suggesting anyone should go into dashcam warrior mode and report every minor infraction, but if we're honest we should know when the standard of driving is so far below that required that urgent intervention is required.
I was doing some channel hopping after watching last night’s Crash Detectives. CH5 had a programme called Motorway Cops : Catching Britain’s Speeders. In it, a lady driver was providing live commentary from her car of a female driving erratically on the motorway and roads in Cheshire. Eventually, the police caught up with the car and poured the driver out of the driver’s seat. When they breath tested her at the roadside, she was 4x over the limit. She had an open bottle of wine next to her in the driving seat. It had chilling parallels with the horrific M4 incident and it does make you wonder if the member of public hadn’t called the police and followed the drunk driver, the outcome could have had similar tragic circumstances.

I wonder what the situation is regarding something like that and using your phone while driving. I mean I know it’s illegal, but if someone didn’t have hands free and saw something like that going on, surely the greater good would be to use your phone?

As above, the women on the other police program really helped the police find the pissed up range rover driver, so it has to be done

I've only called 999 once for a suspected drink driver who was all over the road on the A1 fairly late at night, sadly my experience wasn't good. The operator just didn't seem to care, I gave the numberplate, and the reply was "it's a hire car so not a lot we can do", I was behind the car for another 30 miles and never saw a police car.

IIRC it isn't illegal in that circumstance.

Yep
You can only use your mobile phone in a vehicle:

to call 999 or 112 in response to a genuine emergency where it is unsafe or impracticable to stop
if you are safely parked
if you are a passenger

Makes sense, would be daft if not.

I've done so myself when driving on the M66 - saw a guy climbing over the bridge parapet just as I was going under it. They'd had a few calls by the time even I phoned.

I have reported a neighbour numerous times for drink driving. She has hit our car, as well as others, while drunk and we even have her on cctv literally crawling out of her car. Response is always that they need to catch her in the act. I gave them the normal times she did it (10 minutes before the off licence 100yds away closed) and still nothing.

I once called the police regarding a car on the M8 motorway that was drifting over all the lanes & wasn’t maintaining a constant speed despite the surrounding traffic being light, I stayed on the phone and behind the driver for as long as I could before having to take the off slip to pick up my daughter. Caught a glimpse of the driver, the only occupant, and he appeared alert but very red-faced, never heard if the police caught up with him further down the road, was 3pm’ish on a weekday.

As already discussed, particularly harrowing episode last night but handled in a sensitive way, as is always the case with this show.

I believe that one was the last in the series though.

That latest episode with the kids was very hard to watch.

So sad that they only stopped through choice rather than a breakdown. In hindsight the mother (who I understand was the driver) must be breaking her heart that she didn't just let the kid spew everywhere and then clean it up later. Although saying that, 99% of the time, they probably would have gotten away with it, but for the drunk / distracted bd straddling the lanes.

Mixed feelings about the discount he got for his guilty plea. I understand the potential benefits as otherwise a defendant might as well take their chance at court, even if the evidence is overwhelming but it didn't feel right that he benefited. He should have had either life inside, or a good 30 years of actual time inside and release him only when he's an old man.

True. He could hardly have disputed the evidence. He needed proper time inside.

No words describe how difficult it is to watch this episode of The Crash Detectives. Everyone should be made to watch it to show the impact that their action could have on the people around them.

The fat muppet in the previous one driving around in his Focus uninsured no licence and drinking all day was bad enough, made easier to deal with in that one of the people he killed was his chav friend and judging on what they found a fun day out i was actually left feeling all warm and fuzzy inside at the thought of a chav scum dying a nasty death.

This last episode though was horrendous, if you noticed the little girls coat was placed back in the car on the motorway, then when they where reconstructing the van and car impact in the lock up you could see the coat still as they announced the deaths of the kids.
The little coat teamed with the stark news really was some powerful stuff.
Anyone with kids can relate to little coats, finding my 13 year olds toddler coat makes me feel emotional remembering how small he used to be......
Clothing is so powerful and I'm surprised it was left in the car...as that can't of been nice for the cops to see it in there...

Anyway, that van driver was just an utter waste of skin, never mind pleading guilty at trial for 4 years off, it should of been based on his lying and trying to get out of it in police interview...

If I'd killed 2 kids in an actual accident, sober, licence, insured etc, I'd struggle to believe i could live with it.
The fact this guy hasn't topped himself tells me all i need to know and if i made the rules he'd be gassed.

I drove past that section of the M4 last night and cringed when I saw the hard shoulder open up in size 200 yards past where it happened into a wider section of refuge, with a gap to pull a car behind the barrier.

What an absolute dhead. How can you justify him being allowed behind the wheel again?

Why have all the children got double barrelled first names?

Some people like double barrelled Christian names. Let’s leave it there shall we?
