Radio 2 drivetime - another show ruined
Discussion
Personally, I think Matt is one of the things that makes the Simon Mayo show!
Sadly, I cannot take the adverts any more. Down on the south coast, it's just a continuous rotation of ads for Drivers' Ltd ("delivering reliability").....Selco ("It's where the trade go" apparently) and worst of all, Ringwood fking Tyres which now makes me want to switch the car radio off by punching it out of the dashboard.
It is great to have you back, Simon, but sorry - I've gone back to Sara Cox.

.... couldn't / didn't negotiate a "NO ADVERTS!" deal like Graham Norton seems to have managed when he moved to Virgin.
And Chris Evans too, also on Virgin.. My wife listens to Mayo on GH daily. I can't stand the adverts. It's a real shame as Simon and Matt work very well together and I feel they could have done better than GH Radio.

I know he isn’t for everyone
But
Rylan Clarke is great.
Music great
The quiz and chit chat great
And it’s lovely to have D&I
Wasn’t a fan, but i have to admit he was really good when he stood in for Steve Wright (even though the “we love you Steve” comments did become a little irksome)But

How Steve Wright manages to cling on to 3 hours in the afternoon is beyond me.....
His success proves that he's a very shrewd character.
I listen to Greatest Hits radio on an Alexa. I've discovered that it was defaulting to London, so I was getting the London adverts (specifically that wrist slashingly annoying 'Ready, Vodaphone' woman...Grrrr)...so I switched to 'Alexa, play greatest hits radio Bucks, Beds, Herts' and bingo...sightly less annoying averts, slightly.
Greatest Hits is what Radio 2 should be, or was...they've absolutely nailed it and I really hope they do well and need less advertising. I want to listen to good music and good conversation...I don't want some massive ego annoying me. Simon Mayo is one of the very few DJs where I actually prefer the conversation.

Johnnie Walker was like that with his drivetime program. I used to commute around the M25/M40 from Rickmansworth to Maidenhead and I remember once he had a really fascinating guest and the whole program was chat for about 45 mins. Totally absorbing. RichB said:

Check out Joe Rogan Experience podcasts on Spotify (free). He has a very diverse range of people on and has some very interesting conversations.Try to find an episode with a guest you like to start you off. Shouldn't be hard, there are over 1,500 episodes and he's interviewed people like Brian Cox, Alex Jones, Russell Brand, Elon Musk, Jordan Peterson, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, CIA officers, Mike Tyson...

I'm not a fan of Rogan because I think he is a bit arrogant and rather brusque.Try to find an episode with a guest you like to start you off. It's as much about listening as it is about firing questions.
My favourite interviewers are those who have the knack of extracting the truth and honest comment from their guests. Mayo, Walker and Eddie Maier (and even the late Jimmy Young) have the ability to connect with the interviewee that makes the interviewee open up and reveal things about themselves that other interviewers could never obtain. It's a form of empathy.
The legendary Irish radio and TV presenter Gay Byrne had that same knack.
It's as much about listening as it is about firing questions.
