Radio 2 drivetime - another show ruined

And just when you thought it couldn’t get worse, apparently Rylan Clark-Neal is taking over Zoe Ball’s Saturday afternoon show.
Have the BBC had enough of Radio 2 and want to shut it down or something? They’re heading the right way, if so.
Never heard of him but mention of Big Brother already puts me off! Have the BBC had enough of Radio 2 and want to shut it down or something? They’re heading the right way, if so.

So in answer to WHO?Have the BBC had enough of Radio 2 and want to shut it down or something? They’re heading the right way, if so.

This is his Wiki - what a joke! Surely they could at least make their own auditions to discover talent, there must be loads of people doing hospital radio that would fancy a chance.
So was Dale Winton, but at least he started life as a DJ.
I have to confess that I had never heard of Joe Suggs before Strictly, but then you see that he has 3-million subscribers watching him Thatching - which must be better than watching flames in a fire, or Goldfish swimming on a TV.

The moment I hear mention of "no G" I switch channels.
yes, this is what you are meant to do. If you don't like something on a radio channel, turn to another channel. There will be folks who do like it, but if that's not you, just turn over. You can try this approach on the telly too. Its really quite amazing.I’ve been driving a van without DAB radio this week and my god it’s painful. I typically listen to a combination of 6 music and LBC (LBC usually switches to 6 music when James O’Brien comes on) which seems to help any long journeys pass painfully enough. 1 week of non DAB radio and my god what a load of crap I have had to endure. Radio 2 used to be ok but it seems to have gone down hill drastically, I’m too old for R1, most others are full of repetitive adds, 5 live isn’t too bad but the quality can be awful on MW.

Is that some disgusting modern euphemism? I'm so out of touch.deadslow said:

Thanks for that brilliant insight. I was making the point that it is unbearable. But I guess you actually understood that but wanted to appear smart.RogerDodger said:

I had the misfortune to hear around 90 seconds of the woeful Gary Davies who must have been standing in for the pitiful SW. He seemed to be encouraging the listening public to phone in if they were 'doing something beginning with 'G', such as gardening, golfing, grinning...'
I was this > < far away from phoning in to respond with 'gasping at how fking useless you are', but held my resolve. Surely no-one with a modicum of sense can find such dross as anything but risible?
I'd have been tempted to phone in and say "grasping my penis, as I am about to start pleasuring myself furiously".I was this > < far away from phoning in to respond with 'gasping at how fking useless you are', but held my resolve. I'll stick up for Rylan a little bit, I'm no fan of Big Brother but I caught him covering for some DJ or other a few months ago and he came across pretty well, certainly more knowledgeable than expected.
Be interesting to see the listener figures in a year or so, the regulars that tune in to Evans/Bruce/Wright aren't the same demographic that Ball (dreadful) and Cox (kind of ok) appeal to.
Gary Davies hasn't been very good at all covering recently, I can't remember him being this bad in the 80s, it's like he's regressed to Smashy and Nicey. Not listened to it but I expect he fits the 80s show he does very well. Used to listen to a LOT of R1 as I worked in a car garage at the time and it was on all the time.

Exactly my experience recently when I too was unfortunate enough to be without DAB on my travels. I don't know how listeners put up with the dross on FM etc.All of it is bloody awful.

GD was that bad, you've just got rose tinted glasses. What era and type of DJs do you think Smashy and Nicey were based upon?Be interesting to see the listener figures in a year or so, the regulars that tune in to Evans/Bruce/Wright aren't the same demographic that Ball (dreadful) and Cox (kind of ok) appeal to.

Agree about that synthetic Celb Rylan geezer though, I was expecting him to be foul, but he wasn't too bad, he did a Room 101 some while ago which was ok.

For me the drive time show has never been as good a it was when Johnnie Walker presented it. It's been going down hill since 2006 when he left with only a slight upturn when Mayo took it over.
Johnnie Walker is the best dj on Radio 2, in fact he must be up with one of the best dj's ever.Edited by anonymous-user on Friday 2nd November 07:50
For some reason the BBC about 25 years ago decided they must employ people with broad regional accents at the detriment of quality.

Johnnie Walker is genuinely interested in the music he plays, and always has been. It's no coincidence that, of the current, and past, presenters on R2, the vast majority of the ones who have got positive comments on this thread are also passionate about music they play. Think Paul Jones, Bob Harris, Huey Morgan, Craig Charles, Mark Radcliffe etc etc.For some reason the BBC about 25 years ago decided they must employ people with broad regional accents at the detriment of quality.
Contrast them with the ones who have been derided on here, who are all more interested in the sound of their own voice, and the mistaken assumption that we've got the slightest interest in what amusing things their children have said, what they're having for dinner or a vacuous phone-in telling them how fking wonderful they are.
DJ's should be made to sit an exam on the history of modern music, in a variety of styles; fail, and they can fk off in place of someone who knows their stuff.
