I did not particularly enjoy the film, but his acting was simply incredible. And I presume that every great actor needs a great director, so these two awards should be no-brianers.

Finally got round to seeing this yesterday. Every bit as good as I was expecting. Phoenix was mesmerising and horrifying in equal measures. It’s interesting that the Joker role really seems to bring out the best in actors.

Ah yes, I'd wiped that terrible film from my memory. Thanks a lot for reminding me.

Anyone else fancy this for any of the 11 Oscar nominations?

I'm not a betting man and never been in a bookies but have had a stab on this as I just really fancy it doing quite well.

Haven't bet on Joaquin for best actor, as although I think it's a no brainer the odds are 1/20 laughlaugh

I have bet £8 on it for best picture at 12/1,
and £8 for best director at 50/1, now I know that's a big gamble but I just fancy the win.

I'd really like to do an accumulator on actor, motion picture, director and score but am struggling of finding a way online to do this and the other bet that I fancy which is for the film to get 5+ Oscars.

Sky bet who I placed the 2 bets with considered it, thought about it and then emailed saying they wouldn't take an accumulator.

People I know who like a flutter said try walking in a bookies and asking for a price and maybe some phone bet type companies.

Now available on Sky Store so watched it yesterday. As good as everyone says, and for once nice to a villain’s back story. We’ve seen how Iron Man, Batman, Wonder Woman etc came about, but never how all of a sudden Joker seems to appear from nowhere to be Batman’s arch enemy. I also liked how his descent into madness and criminality was actually believable - you could see that chain of events tipping someone of his mentality over the edge. Plus, for once, it was a nice change to see a film based on a superhero premise not actually have any superhero stuff in it. Superb.

Watched it last night on Amazon Prime. I really enjoyed it - you forgot it was part of a superhero franchise. Superb acting and a wonderful recreation of 70s New York (sorry, Gotham!) it deserves to do well at the Oscars.

Welease Woderwick!

Saw Joker tonight, enjoyed it and was very societally thematic. He's probably nailed on for an oscar, a very "oscar" performance, the academy seem to love a bit of mental anguish.

I would recite a very relevant and famous Tropic Thunder scene but I suspect that would get me banned.

I enjoyed it, if you can call it that, and to me it is a very realistic version of what has been turned into a totally unbelievable franchise and genre. If you compare this tot eh garbage that was Endgame for instance, There is no comparison in terms of acting, dialogue and the way the character is developed.

You can actually believe this might happen, that a man man so damaged could be able to make this happen. Ajnd peopel could follow him in this world or bits of it.

You could see sparks of it with the Heath Ledger version, then Leto utterly ruined it (made a great comeback in Bladerunner mind). But it is oddly moving.

Comparing it to End Game is not really a straight comparison. End Game is the culmination of 22movies (which had plenty of character development) and it’s also a ‘comic book movie’. It’s supposed to be brash, loud, colourful, and fun. A totally different type of film.

Joker however is a single standalone movie that if you had to compare to a comic is more of a ‘dark graphic novel’ movie.

They are both great movies of their type. I got way more flat out fun enjoyment from End Game, but Joker is the better ‘movie’ (and it really isn’t supposed to be ‘fun’ or even particularly enjoyable). It gritty, dark, and I agree with you, strangely moving at times. I had a huge grin on my face at a particular moment near the end...

when he stands on the bonnet of the police car and puts his smile back using his own blood that was an utterly iconic scene. He WAS Joker in that moment and I actually found myself happy about it with him. Strange sensation to root for the bad guy so much

I thought pretty much the opposite. On a surface level it was really, really well executed (acting, cinematography, production design) but that aside it really had no substance whatsoever. Really self-important and tried to be far grander than it could manage, putting it in a category that it clearly wanted to be compared with (pick your Scorsese film) it falls apart. As a comic-book movie however, something like Endgame knew exactly what it needed to be and executed it near perfectly given that it was summarising 20+ films.

It's my go-to at the moment simply because it's the best film I've seen in years, but compared to something like Parasite, which has something to say and says it with conviction and without hitting you over the head with it, Joker falls massively short.

Ultimately it's a good thing when a film divides opinion like this, it at means at the very least it swung for the fences. There are far too many movies which come and go without taking any risks.

Endgame was/is a fairly unique film experience as an' event' film. I think some people just see, 'comic film' and don't understand how different they can be.
I had high hopes for Joker because of what I was reading when it was being conceived way back, and it delivered. It put itself in a comic mythos, but it also had a lot of social commentary in there too, it is a near perfect example of how a comic film can be executed in genres and style. It's very moving and hilarious funny, it does give me the same sort of uneasy feels as KIng of COmedy, and the director wanted that same sort of unknowing what was going on as that classic, also Taxi Driver, the unreliable narrator. He says he won't give answers for 20 years...I hope so because Joker will last if he sticks to it, if he does a sequel...well then answers may be give. As it is, a lot of the film is just..did it happen that way or not? It's still making me think now, I've only seen it once but I'll really enjoy my second viewing when it happens.
Joaquin deserves his BAFTA, and it's also pretty cool to see how it became a smash hit, even though the media tried to quash it.

A sequel would be a mistake IMO, and a mere money making exercise. We've seen how Batman came into being, and now how Joker came into being. There could be no Joker sequel now without Batman appearing although perhaps there was a mistake in pitching Joker in this particular film as 20+ years older than Batman as in all previous films, aside from the original Adam West outings, the two appear to be roughly similar in age give or take a couple of years.

Late to the party but I thought Joker was excellent. One of the best films I've seen. The fact that it wasn't a 'superhero movie' worked in its favour for me.

The slow decline into insanity, caused by his environment and the world at large (or was he always a loon?) was really well portrayed.

I especially like the very end where *SPOILER* you're left wondering if any of it even happened .

Great film in my opinion.
