Just walked in from a late night showing in Hollywood. FANTASTIC work by Phoenix. Also FANTASTIC work by Hildur Guðnadóttir who composed the score. Genuine breath of fresh air after the instantly forgettable films loaded with CGI the roll off the production line.
Had a quick read of Peter Bradshaw's review in the Guardian and it reminds me of why Stephen Fry wanted to bin critics in his visit to Room 101.
ETA: SPOILER ALERT: The composer link has a few references to scenes the film.

My only concern is can anyone beat a certain Aussie actor? Because I can't see anyone coming close.
It’s not really fair to compare the two since it’s a different take on the Joker. Jasandjules said:
No I can appreciate that as such but the bottom line is forever ingrained in my mind is the performance of Heath Ledger and I will compare them. I won't be able to help myself.
If you haven’t seen it, go. It’s a brilliant performance from Phoenix and completely different. I found it sad and disturbing, might not sound like an endorsement but it really is.Edited by anonymous-user on Saturday 5th October 21:40

It’s not really fair to compare the two since it’s a different take on the Joker. I love the Dark Knight and Ledger's Joker is the icing on the cake but Joker is just Joker, Phoenix carries the whole film by himself.
I watched it last night, I think the characters journey in the film will be horrifyingly familiar (if not as extreme) for anyone with mental health issues. The consequence for which will be different for each individual. Genuinely shocked by the truth in it.
I thought the film was incrediblely well shot but it should be an 18 and come with a genuine health warning.

I thought it was really good. 90% of the film is about a severely mentally ill man, forgotten by the system and struggling with life and it's quite powerful. However, the final act in Arkham (was it?) was the comic book Joker and I can see how they could then weave him into a darker Batman world but I hope they don't.
We know the rest of the story and there's no real point trying to re-write that.
A very timely film with everything going on in the world with mental health so I see why some critics and audiences are a bit 'scared of it' in case it was to trigger copycat cries for help as Phoenix brings a realism to it all.
Not sure I'm desperate to see it again as I don't think it's that sort of film but it's one that'll stay with me and I suspect it's a bit of a landmark for comic book films as it has been shown that you can do something very powerful and political with the comic source material for inspiration.
However, it is a bit Ken Loach (sp?) where the main character just happens to be the most recognisable comic villain of all time. Would it have done/been doing so well at the box office if it wasn't?

I'm not sure why. The main message is be nice to people and the world would be a nicer place. Be st to people, and eventually it'll come back to you. There are worse things for 15 - 17 year olds to learn.
Saw this last night utterly fantastic and might just be THE film to kick-start the DC universe into life. Setup perfectly for a new batman film yeah I know too soon? But the film even as a standalone piece was fantastic and the nods to heath ledger's character were subtle yet perfect
