I thought it was really good. 90% of the film is about a severely mentally ill man, forgotten by the system and struggling with life and it's quite powerful. However, the final act in Arkham (was it?) was the comic book Joker and I can see how they could then weave him into a darker Batman world but I hope they don't.

We know the rest of the story and there's no real point trying to re-write that.

A very timely film with everything going on in the world with mental health so I see why some critics and audiences are a bit 'scared of it' in case it was to trigger copycat cries for help as Phoenix brings a realism to it all.

Not sure I'm desperate to see it again as I don't think it's that sort of film but it's one that'll stay with me and I suspect it's a bit of a landmark for comic book films as it has been shown that you can do something very powerful and political with the comic source material for inspiration.

However, it is a bit Ken Loach (sp?) where the main character just happens to be the most recognisable comic villain of all time. Would it have done/been doing so well at the box office if it wasn't?
Quoting this as it pretty much sums up my thoughts, although the uproar about the violence seem like virtue signalling to me, what about the mental health issues.

One of my markers for a good film is based on 'would I see the film again'? probably not as it falls short of being 'entertaining' for me, but it was engrossing, so a solid 7/10 from me.

Think the very last scene could have been omitted, the end of the previous scene worked for me to round off the story.

Bit of "Whatifery" but I wonder if Heath Ledger was still with us he'd of been cast for the role

Maybe I let the hype build up, we really didn't rate it.

Saw it last night. Excellent. I was worried it would be a let down after seeing heath ledgers joker but it worked well. As it has been said it’s a different take on the joker.

I thought the film was incrediblely well shot but it should be an 18 and come with a genuine health warning.
I'm not sure why. The main message is be nice to people and the world would be a nicer place. Be st to people, and eventually it'll come back to you.

There are worse things for 15 - 17 year olds to learn.
Maybe to the average 15 - 17 year old but someone with mental health issues (which more and more children have now) will see things in the character / story and undoubtedly be sympathetic to the plight of the Joker realising how easy it is to stray from dark thoughts to dark acts.

Just come out from seeing it - wow is all I can sum up. Out of 25 people in the audience 4 walked out (same group) - I don’t know why tbh as whilst that scene was graphic it wasn’t ridiculous. If you get a chance to see it in the cinema do so, JPs performance was sensational.

You're thinking society treats people with mental illness badly, and they might watch a film and turn on the people treating them badly. The solution to this in your world is a warning on the film?

How about we do a better job of not creating a society which leads them to be sympathetic to the joker.

Of course there are those who'll take anything as a slight against them and turn violent. Seeing or not seeing a warning on this film will not change the end result for those people. We could perhaps put some effort into identifying what causes their issues, identifying who they are earlier, and supporting them properly.

Tldr? It the film's worrying it's not the film that needs to change.

Looking forward to this, dunno if I'll catch it at the cinema, maybe at home in the near future.

With the graphic violence, is it the sort of that goes beyond what's been portrayed in DC films, but seen in other types of film?

Wondering if there's an element of die-hard fans not being happy plus a bit of behavioural contagion on the go what with people on both sides of the Atlantic walking out of the cinema?

People must walk out in the middle of films for lots of different reasons, some not attached to the film at all. I can't help thinking the "walk outs" are being highlighted to fit a certain narrative.

If you can, it’s cinema worthy. It’s not that graphic at all - one scene yes, otherwise no. It’s certainly not as bad as other DC based films by far.

Eeeek

Just got back home after watching this.

What a film. So incredibly dark. Fantastic study of a decent into madness. Loved the green hair, channeling the spirit of HL but making it his own.

The violence was nicely judged, not too much, with just enough of a gap between to make each event stand out..

Deserves an award of some description.

The scene in the toilet after subway incident was a personal triumph and freedom for him like a goodbye of Arthur and the transformation into joker had begun and the haunting cello score matched the scene perfectly watching that 2mins was to me worth the admission price alone...pure brilliance

Was the outcry at the violence in the film drummed you by the studios to get headlines? Phoenix walking out of an interview after being asked a question about the violence etc. I ask because there have been A LOT of films before this with far more violence. Rambo killed everyone, not a peep, though the film did get absolutely panned. I was half expecting to see Joker lopping off heads left and right they way it had been played up! Genius PR if it was.

Seen it last Friday, an absolutely fantastic film.

The film has a heavy atmosphere that makes you a bit uncomfortable throughout it, but that's to the movies credit.

I'm personally sick of Marvel and superhero stuff in general but this film was a refreshing watch.

9/10.

I walked out about a third of the way through.

Had a pint before the film, needed a piss.

Truly fantastic film.
